Project Title

Preparation of monoethylene glycol (MEG) via hydrolysis of ethylene oxide

Problem Statement

Ethylene glycol is a chemical known for use in various commercial and industrial

applications which ranges but are not limited to: use as antifreeze, coolant, raw material

for polyester fiber, fiberglass, and polyethylene terephthalate resin production among

others. Several processes have been developed for high yields of ethylene glycol, one of

which is the Shell Omega Technology which claims an almost 100% yield of ethylene

glycol via a fully catalytic process. However, it is a patented process exclusive for Shell. A

reactor design for a noncatalytic process with 98% yield of ethylene glycol via hydrolysis

of ethylene oxide is thus proposed.
