LUBE OIL SYSTEM

Lube oil or Lubrication oil is used to counter the friction produced by the rubbing of two metal surfaces, example
bearings, piston and cylinder. It is of prime importance as the consequences of this friction may result in loss of
equipment, drastic rise in temperature which may cause fire, and above all the Production loss.

The Lube oil system installed at hub power plant is to provide lubrication to the bearing, 1 to 4 installed in turbine,
turning gear and serve as a sealing oil to generators bearing.

The system consists of:

1. Shaft mounted pump

2. Booster turbine
3. Booster pump
4. Coolers
5. Main oil suction pump
6. Tuning gear pump
7. Emergency bearing oil pump
8. Oil conditioners
9. Dirty and Clean oil tanks

MODES OF OPERATION:

Normal Operation:

During normal operation the booster turbine will be driven by the oil from the shaft mounted pump at
15.5 bar which will be drop to the pressure between 3.15 to 3.85 bars.
The booster turbine will drive the booster pump which pump the oil at 1.75 bar pressure to the suction of
shaft mounted pump located in the first standard of the main turbine.
The oil after driving the booster turbine will be provided to bearings and the turning gear of the main
turbine via coolers.

Startup Operation:

During the startup turbine does not develop enough pressure to drive the booster turbine so following step are
taken

Motor driven Suction pump is used to pump oil to the shaft mounted pump suction as the booster pump
cannot be driven by the booster turbine.
Motor driven turning gear oil pump is used to deliver the oil to the bearing and the turning gear via
coolers.

Following step are temporary i.e. both motor driven pumps are cut off, once main turbine reaches the 90% of the
rated speed.

There is an emergency DC motor driven bearing oil pump if the pump failed to supply the oil. An Exhaust fan is also
equipped over the tank to remove moisture or fumes from the tank
TURBINE LUBE OIL PURIFICATION SYSTEM

This system is design for the purification of the turbine oil, which ensure that the oil is clean when it enters the
turbine lube oil tank,

One oil purification system is provided to each unit

Each purifier system is design to process 20% of main turbine lube oil tank capacity per hour (i.e. around
5m3/hour), which meets the oil quality requirements for turbine and generator.
It can fill the main turbine tank in 5 hours
The velocity the suction line is 0.3m/sec and for discharge line it is 0.6m/sec, the whole system is designed
at a pressure 3.5 bars and temperature of 80C

TURBINE OIL STORAGE SYSTEM

Turbine oil storage system is for the storage and drainage of the turbine oil in two different tanks.

This system is common for all four units.

One tank is called the clean tank which contain the clean oil from the vendors or from oil purifier and the
other tank contain the dirty oil from the main turbine oil tanks.
Each tank is capable to hold one complete charge for one main turbine lube oil tank which is around 60m3
There are two external positive displacement pump each having a capacity of 5m 3 / hour, one out of
which is kept is service and the other is kept reserve, these pump are used to transfer the clean oil from
the road tankers to the clean oil tank or can transfer the dirty oil from dirty oil tank to the road tankers.
When turbine is not running these pumps are also used to transfer oil
o From dirty oil tank to the clean oil tank via purifier.
o From main oil tank to the clean oil tank passing through purifier
o And from the clean oil tank to main oil tank directly.
There is one drain pump for each unit which transfers the main turbine lube oil tank to the dirty oil tank.
