FEM 5002 SOCIAL STATISTIC

Mini Assignment

1. What are the things a researcher should know when choosing an appropriate multivariate
technique for his/her data?

In order to understand multivariate analysis, it is important to understand some of the terminology. A

variate is a weighted combination of variables. The purpose of the analysis is to find the best
combination of weights. Nonmetric data refers to data that are either qualitative or categorical in nature.
Metric data refers to data that are quantitative, and interval or ratio in nature. This technique examines
the relationship between several categorical independent variables and two or more metric dependent
variables. Whereas analysis of variance (ANOVA) assesses the differences between groups (by using T
tests for two means and F tests between three or more means), MANOVA examines the dependence
relationship between a set of dependent measures across a set of groups.

2. What test of differences is appropriate in each of the following situations?

a. Annual Salaries of Male and Female employees of an organization?

Independent Sample T -Test (2 Groups)

b. IQ score of Three ethnic groups: Malay, Chinese and Indian

ANOVA (3 groups)

c. Managers and Supervisors respond Yes , No , or Not Sure , to an attitude question. Their
answer is to be compared.
Independent Sample T -Test (2 Group)

3. Discuss the following one-way ANOVA output:

The ANOVA table is significant whereby the P -value is below than 0.05. It shows that the airlines DELTA,
KLM and Lufthansa are charging different fares for the same travel. Lufthansa charges 19.95 higher than
DELTA. Similarly, KLM charges higher than DELTA by 33.9. KLM charges Higher by 14 when compared
