Las Leyendas Mayas

Objective: Students will be able to read and understand a Mayan Legend. They will be able to draw and
recognize a few vocabulary words that go with the legend.
Level: Intermediate
Duration: 2-3 class periods

Activity:

In pairs students go to the website provided that has 7 different Mayan Legends. The stories can
also be printed and handed out to the students. The teacher can decide to either assign each pair a
legend or let the students choose.
The students should read the story 2-3x for understanding.
In their pairs they can print out the story or work from the computer to complete the worksheet.
The worksheet asks to give a summary of the story, the problem, the solution and the main
characters. On the back is a chart for vocabulary. They should find 5-8 to translate to
English/Spanish and be able to draw.
On day 2 students should read the story again with their partners. There are 2 options depending
on the level of technology available for the teacher/students. I would have the students type up (or
copy and paste) the story on a document. With the vocabulary words they wrote the day before
they can find pictures on the internet to insert in the story where the words would belong. (I have
included an example below). The other option if there is not technology available is to have the
students write the story out and draw the pictures in place of the words on paper. The teacher can
decide if they want the student to give a word box with the story or not. For lower levels, it might be
necessary.
On day 3 the pairs should sit with another pair and trade stories with the pictures. Students should
read the stories and discuss in the groups.
Extension or high level/honors: With only the worksheet with the summary, problem, solution, etc.
The students would trade that sheet with another group. The other pair would have to write the story
only using the sheet provided. They would use the vocabulary words with pictures to also include in the
story. Then, after writing, the groups would be given the stories to check to see how close they were.
