Mrs. Crowther
Garnet Valley High School
552 Smithbridge Road
Glen Mills, PA 19342

Dear Mrs. Crowther:

For my college exploration project, I decided to research Temple University, University of Pittsburgh, and
University of California Los Angeles. I searched all of these colleges because they have caught my interest in
their different programs, locations, clubs, and activities. All of these colleges I was fortunate enough to be able
to visit and explore the area around them. The following colleges are also very unique from one another and are
all located in different parts of America. Even though these colleges are not nearby to one another they all are
colleges that are located in major cities which are an important factor for me. Although they are different in the
programs they have for undergraduate students to study. Also, these three colleges are considered to be my
reach, in the middle of the road, or safety schools. From doing this project I was able to look into each college
more and learn information that I was not aware of before.

My first college that I researched was the University of Pittsburgh. I selected this school because I like the
programs and the location of this college. In addition, I also chose this university because I visited it over the
summer and it is one of my top schools to go to. I love the location because I love being in a very urban setting
in a big city. The University of Pittsburgh is right outside of the heart of the city, but you are still able to get a
very urban feel. The location also corresponds with me because there is so much around me that I am able to do
and access very easily. On weekends or during the week I can easily go into the city in less than fifteen minutes
and go to any shops or restaurants. This university has a lot of programs that I like one being biological
sciences. The price of this school is affordable for me and I wouldnt come out with a huge amount of student
loans to pay off. This school would be my middle of the road school.Lastly, it is important for me when I
apply here it needs to be as soon as possible and I need to have my, a school record, standardized test scores,
letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities.

The next college I researched was University of California Los Angeles. I selected UCLA because of the
programs, location, and it is one of my top schools. UCLA is right in Los Angeles, California and it would take
me a five-hour plane ride to get there. Although the distance is very far I dont mind too much because I have
family that lives on the West Coast I would be able to stay with if needed. This college does have great
programs, but this college does not have the exact major that I want. If I were to attend this university I would
end up majoring in biochemistry, biology, or human biology and the society. The other downside to this school
is that I would have a lot of student loans. This university supplied me with not financial aid and also since I
would be out of state it would be very costly. In addition, this would be my reach school.

Temple University is the last university that I researched for this project. Temple is located right in the city of
Philadelphia. It would take me an estimate of about forty-seven minutes to get there. For me, this is very close,
but if I were to go here I would still live on campus. I selected this school because I visited it and it is also a
very well known college in this area that has great programs. By far this college has my favorite major which
would be biomedical sciences. I would love the location of this college because it is urban and in a very big
city. Although this city is not the safest which is a negative factor about it. I would be able to afford this school
if I were to go here. Out of all of the three schools, this would be the most affordable. Temple would be
considered my safety school which is very important for me that I know I will have a school that I will get
accepted to. To end, this college would be very important for me to apply to.

Researching about Temple University, University of Pittsburgh, and University of California Los Angeles was
very helpful so I was able to further my knowledge about these universities. All of these schools are on my list
to apply to but UCLA would be my last choice due to the lack of financial aid and their programs. All of these
schools are able to connect with me because I love urban settings and all of these universities are located in
major cities. These schools relate to my Myers- Brigg profile and the values survey because I would be able to
socialize and meet many new people because they are middle to big sized schools. This played a role in my
decision-making process because for me it is important to be surrounded by many different things and many
different people. These schools would help me start my journey of becoming a neonatal surgeon. In conclusion,
I am glad that I was able to research more about potential schools I am interested in applying to.

Sincerely,

Morgan Maugans
