Vocal Assessment Criteria

Berklee Voice Department

Musicianship
A. Pitches/rhythms are accurate (Melodic interpretation where appropriate).
B. Count offs are accurate.
C. Pianist communication and/or accompaniment tracks are well presented and prepared.
D. Informed improvisation demonstrating knowledge of form harmony melody and rhythm.
E. Memorization is complete.
F. Overall Preparation (student is on time, warmed up, charts are prepared).

Intonation; Singing in tune


A. All pitches are in tune with a strong sense of tonality demonstrated.

Tone Production
A. Stylistically appropriate use of registers.
B. A free sound without excessive strain or tension.
C. Singing with stylistically appropriate resonance.

Technique
A. Stylistically appropriate clarity in diction/pronunciation of any language.
B. No excessive physical strain or tension.
C. Consistent, low breath action.
D. Breath management over long phrases.
