L3 CMPT Final Major Project Reflective Entries

WEEKLY REFLECTIONS
This is where you think about your FMP learning journey and development.
Dont simply describe what you did - consider what you have learnt and how this has benefitted your project.

Week 1 / 2 This week you worked on your initial ideas and started your FMP
concept

How has writing a concept / proposal Deciding what to do took a while as I didnt want to start planning for
helped you with finalising your idea? something I didnt want to do, So after looking through all my options I
decided to do a music video. Then I had to look into what was being
asked and pick an appropriate song. Once I choose a song (waves by
Joey Bada$$), Writing a concept really put into prospective what I had to
do. It helped me plan out the next 5 weeks and gave me an
understanding of any difficulties along the way.

How did the feedback help you adapt Getting feedback really helped. It helped lift my work by simply explaining
your idea what did you change after what else I need and what could be improved. During this week my main
feedback? things I changed because of my feedback was; Put more detail into my
research on artist and genre, as well as talk more about certain
techniques used in Hip Hop.

This week you worked on your initial ideas and started your FMP
Research

How has the research for your target Looking into my target audience gave me an understanding of what my
audience helped you understand your target audience liked and who they where. Things like there age and
production more fully? interests. It also helped me see what they want to see in my video and
concept they do and dont like. So overall it helped me see what they
thought made up a hip hop music video and what I was aiming to achieve
to help improve there viewing of the video

How did your primary research help Asking around and doing surveys help me see what others thought made
you? a good hip hop video. This helped me learn that some people like a video
with only a narrative and others preferred a mix of narrative and
dancing/lip-syncing. From this it helped me decide what I was going to do
with mine (a mix of both)

How has researching the conventions It helped me realise that one of the most important things was the editing
of your chosen genre helped you as you cant just whack some clips together when editing. Of course it
understand what is required from you helped me understand that filing is just as important as everything in each
in order to meet a distinction grade? shot will tell you something about the narrative, so Mi se en Scene really
puts the story together. Another thing which is very important is making
sure that looking into the genre and style helps massively as it gives you
a chance to take from multiple successful music videos and use them in
you

How has including a variety of Having a mix of two helped as I could get an understanding of what my
sources (primary and secondary) friend and family thought made a hip hop video as well as what my what
helped with your understanding of professionals thought and used.
your medium / genre?

Week 2 / 3 This week you will start your planning

What did you learn from your From my secondary research looking into artist in the same genre and
research? and similar ones, I learned that there are so many different editing styles
and techniques, with colour correction, transitions, distortion and multiple
different styles of cutting to the beat. Another thing was learning different
ways people explain a narrative with multiple different styles as well. One
being changing from narrative to dancing and lip-syncing. was going to
use my research by adding multiple different techniques and ideas from
other videos and putting them into one. This included the transitions,
colour correction, and lip-syncing, fish eye

How will this be useful to your This research will help me plan the write things as I wont be going be
planning? randomly making a video, instead I will be using ideas which I have
created based on other hip hop music videos.

What sources of information did you I looked into a AS media distinction music video which gave me an Idea
look at that were different from your of what was ideal for the grade as well as the information which comes
proposed project along with it. One thing that helped me with this was looking into there pre
production and research. Looking into the extent of what she did for her
music video and genre gave me an understanding of how much was
being expected of me.

What did you learn from your planning I Found out how much was expected and the amount of time it takes to
this week get a music video as well as the pre production that goes into it. Another
thing I learned was how to do the scribble effect after seeing it in multiple
music video and thought it was really cool and added to the music videos.

What issues did you encounter and One issue I found was trying to get my actors to find an appropriate date
how did you over come them? we could all do, This was a big issue and ended up with me getting rid of
4 actors and finding 2 new ones.

Planning & Production

effective planning, organisation your FMP Workbook will explain what you need to do in the next few
weeks to make sure all of your planning is completed, and also how this will help you
efficient production against timescales your FMP Proposal will clearly identify how you intend to
create your project before the deadline in May
commitment & subject engagement all of the above referred to in your daily/weekly reflections

Week 3 This week was the start of your production process

What practical work have you done For this week I started filming later on in the week as I needed to fix up so
this week - and how helpful was your research. I started on Friday throughout the hole day. The planning was
earlier planning very helpful for the start of the video when Ryan is in his bedroom getting
ready/up. But throughout the day we drifted further and further away from
the idea, as it was a day in the life we couldnt follow our play to the exact
as ryans day turned out different to how we thought it would.

How will this be useful to you as your Once we get to the editing part it should make it much easier as I planned
production process continues the majority of my video through the editing knowing what transition,
effect, etc. I wanted to use.
Upload and pictures you have taken

What issues did you encounter and One issue when filming was having enough battery on my camera as well
how did you over come them? as the light I used. I lost my second battery meaning I only had one
battery which made it hard. I overcame this by shooting the first half in my
house and instead of going straight out to film the rest we took a break to
recharge the batteries. Another issue was my SD card. In the past iv had
multiple issues with this. The main one is it saying I have no space when I
only had a few clips on my 8GB card. I overcame this by Wiping
everything of it on my laptop and making it like a brand new car (I forgot
the actually name for it) making it able to have 8GB of footage.

Week 4 This week was the second week of your practical production

What did you learn in your sessions From this week I was still filming but only the night shots. So I edited the
this week first half of the video in the house which gave me an idea of how long the
hole video would take to edit. I then on the Monday shot the night shots
with Ryan. I leaned from this week that editing was going to be longer
than I first thought

Have you tried anything new this This was the first time I have used a scribble effect. It takes a lot of time
week - if so, was it a success and practice and the first 10 or so I didnt use as the quality wasnt good
enough. Another thing was a lot of the effects used in my piece. I would
only ever cut to the beat before. So I experimented with almost every
effect in the music video.
What feedback did you find most When editing the most common feedback was to keep doing scribble
useful verbal or written effects as they thought it looked good. Another thing I got told to do was
fade from the day in the life to to the night shots of him lip syncing, so I
did.

How will this be useful to you as your A lot of the feedback I got was useful as it helped me differentiate
production process comes to a between my good editing skills and scribbles and my bad ones.
conclusion

What issues did you encounter and Another thing Is I would use longer methods to edit which made it longer,
how did you over come them? I asked my teacher if he knows any quicker ways and he did making it
much quicker to get the same effect. This helped save a lot of time as it
was very long winded before.

Week 5 This week was your finishing off week - for both your edits an written
work

What feedback did you find most Certain things I found easier when written, this was mainly when editing and
useful verbal or written as they could tell me the exact way of doing something giving me a list I need
to follow. But when Finishing of pre production I found it easier when verbal
wouldnt need big lists of stuff to do.

What did you learn in your sessions From this session I leaned that the best editing takes time and cutting to the
this week beat is the most important thing when editing a hip hop music video.

How has this helped you meet your The main feedback I got was the scribble effect and that I should add more,
targets - see FMP Workbook This defiantly brought my piece together making it more interesting and
visually appealing. Another was certain parts of the lip syncing was too long
with out aa cut or transition, so to make these parts better I added another lip
syncing part when he is sat down and changed the opacity, then cutting it in
and out with the beat which also made it look better.

How helpful did you find the pitch

what feedback did you get?
This first person said they thought it was
very good, they followed this up by saying
that they think the target audience would
also enjoy it. They believed it was easy to
follow and could understand the narrative.

This person said they thought it was very

creative and fun to watch. Additionally
they said it fits all target audiences as its
got an old school feel although its modern
music. They also said it fits the genre and
the day in the life style. They said the
editing was also cool and fun. He followed
it up by saying he liked it and said it was
creative.
This person said it was really creative,
They also said that people our age likes
the style and music. They also said the
narrative and characters where easy to
follow. She then said she loves the fish
eye and the editing was really creative.
And one again said she thought the idea
was creative.

They said the video was good and loud,

but could have been more original with the
idea. He later followed it with, it does well
to connect with the target audience and
engage them. He said the character is
followed well, but the narrative is a bit
random, He additionally said the filming
could have been more steady. He finally
said he thought it was creative, especially
the editing.

How did your peer feedback help This helped a lot as it gave me an understanding of what they liked as my
target audience. Another thing is it helped me see whether the long editing
was worth it (which it was). Although I couldnt make any changes on the
video as there wasnt enough time it made me feel more confident with the
decisions I had made, especially picking our age group as the target
audience.

What issues did you encounter and One issue I can was filming the pitch; I find it really hard talking straight at a
how did you over come them? camera talking but after a while I got used to it. Another being the way I
edited the pitch. This was very long winded and had to take out all the hick-
ups. I just battled through it
