Two5in.gasliftmandrels,thelowerwithanorificevalveandtheupperwithanunloadingvalve.Gas
liftsimulationsindicatedthatthewellswouldneedartificiallifttomaintainproductionrateswithin12to18
months.

AnOptimaxtubingretrievablesubsurfacesafetyvalve(SSV),whichwouldprovidepositiveshutoff
protectionintheeventofacatastrophiclossofwellcontrol.PerPSA,allwellsoperatingintheNorwegian
NorthSeaarerequiredtohaveanSSVinplacetocontainwellcontroleventsandpreventthereleaseof
reservoirfluidstotheenvironment.

Withtheproposedsubseacompletionssystemdecided,aqualitycontrolplanwasdevelopedwithand
approvedbytheoperator,whichdocumentedthequalityassurancerequirementsforthemanufacture,
inspectionandtestingofallcasedholecompletionsequipmentforthewells.Theplanalsodetailedevery
sequenceofactivities,fromthedevelopmentofthemanufacturingprocesstothedeliveryofequipmentto
thewellsite.Theplanincludeddetaileddescriptionsofseparateactivities,includingordersforvendorparts
andequipment,inhouseandsubcontractormanufacturingprocesses,finishedgoodsqualitycontroland
finalinspection,assemblyinstructionsandqualitycontrol,anddeliveryproceduresofallequipmenttothe
rigsite.Thepersonresponsibleforapprovalofeachactivitywasclearlyidentified,aswereanyreference
documentsandacceptancecriteria.Inaddition,thedocumentcapturedanyoperatorqualityassuranceand
controlrequirements.

WiththisplanreviewedandapprovedbyqualityassurancerepresentativesfrombothWeatherfordandthe
operator,themanufacturingprocessproceeded,withthemajorityofequipmentbuiltinAberdeenand
Houston.Priortorunninganyequipmentdownhole,allpartiesresponsibleforthedeploymentofthesubsea
completionsystemmettosystematicallyreviewthestepsrequiredtosafelyandefficientlydelivereachtool
intothewell.Thisprocess,referredtoasawellonpaper,wasrepeatedseveraltimesoverthecourseof
fivedaystogivetheengineersathoroughunderstandingofeachstepandtobepreparedwithalternate
processestoaddressinstallationsetbacksthatmayarise.

Theinstallationplanforbothwellswasidenticalandbeganwitha
prejobsafetymeetingwithallpersonnelinvolved,withparticular
focusonhandlingofthecompletionassemblies.Ablowout
preventer(BOP)wastheninstalledandtestedto250barwith
brinewithaspecificgravity(sg)of1.03.

Thelowercompletion,consistingof102jointsof5in.screens
withswellablepackersspacedbetween,wasinstalled.The95/8
in.mainborecasingwasthenpreparedfortheuppercompletion
byscrapingandpressuretestingto250barwitha1.45sgfluid.

consistedofrunninginhole:

Thesubseacompletionsystem
crossoverassemblytoameasureddepthof3,090meters.

TheOptiPkrproductionpacker,includingatoplandingnipple, sealbetweentheoutsideofthe

Adownholepressuretestgaugemandrelandthechemical
injectionmandrel.Separatepressuretestswereconductedonthe
pressuretestgauge(7,500psifor10min),thefittingbetweenthemandrelsinjectionvalveandthecontrol
line(345barfor10min)andthecontrolline(100barfor10min)priortocontinuingwiththeinstallation.

Gasliftmandrelwithorificevalveandgasliftmandrelwithunloadingvalve,with5in.,17lb13Cr
tubinginbetween.

More5in.,17lb13Crtubingaccordingtotally,toensuretheSSVwouldbeplacedatthecorrect
depth.
TheOptimaxSSV,withsplicesubsaboveandbelow,followedbyapressuretestoftheSSVcontrolline
(690barfor10min).Thecontrollinewasthenpressuredupandmaintainedat400bartokeeptheSSV
openwhilerunningadditionaltubinginhole.

Additionaltubinguntilthetubinghangerdepthwasreached,followedbyabumperwireanchorsub.

A10in.by5in.tubinghangerwasthenruninholeandlanded,followedbyadditionalpressuretests
onthetubinghangerfromaboveandtheSSV.Theproductionpackerwasset,andfinalpressuretestswere
conductedontheproductiontubing,packerandthechemicalinjectioncontrolline.AninflowtestoftheSSV
andvariouspressuretestsonthetubinghangerandvalvessetindifferentpositionsclosedoutthe
installationprocedure.

Futureapplications

Theupfrontplanningandcollaborationwiththeoperator,coupledwithamethodicalinstallationand
pressuretestingprogram,helpedensurethatbothsubseacompletionswereinstalledefficiently.The
installationswerecompletedtwodaysaheadofthescheduledtime.

ThetwowellsweretobebroughtonlineinQ22013,andthesuccessfulinstallationoftheseinitialsubsea
completionshaspromptedtheoperatortousethisstrategyforfuturewellsinthefieldandinthegreater
