TheS200solidmotorsareusedasthefirststageofthelaunchvehicle.Eachboosterhasadiameterof
3.2metres,alengthof25metres,andcarries207tonnesofpropellant.Theseboostersburnfor130
secondsandproduceapeakthrustofabout5,150kilonewtons525tfeach.[3]

AseparatefacilityhasbeenestablishedatSriharikotatomaketheS200boosters.Anothermajorfeature
isthattheS200slargenozzlehasbeenequippedwithaflexseal.Thenozzlecanthereforebe
gimballedwhentherocketsorientationneedscorrection.[20]

Inflight,asthethrustfromtheS200boostersbeginstotailoff,thedeclineinaccelerationissensedby
therocketsonboardsensorsandthetwinVikasenginesontheL110liquidpropellantcorestageare
thenignited.BeforetheS200sseparateandfallawayfromtherocket,thesolidboostersaswellasthe
Vikasenginesoperatetogetherforashortperiodoftime,[20]similarofthatAmericanTitanIIIandTitan
IVbooster.

SecondStage

Thesecondstage,designatedL110,isa4meterdiameterliquidfueledstagecarrying110tonnesof
UDMHandN2O4.ItisthefirstIndianliquidengineclusterdesign,andusestwoimprovedVikasengines,
eachproducingabout700kilonewtons70tf.[6][7]TheimprovedVikasengineusesregenerative
cooling,providingimprovedweightandspecificimpulse,comparedtoearlierrockets.[21]TheL110core
stageignites113secondsafterliftoffandburnsforabout200seconds.[7]

ThirdStage

ThecryogenicupperstageisdesignatedtheC25andwillbepoweredbytheIndiandevelopedCE20
engineburningLOXandLH2,producing186kilonewtons19.0tfofthrust.TheC25willbe4metres
13ftindiameterand13.5metres44ftlong,andcontain27tonnesofpropellant.[21]

Thisenginewasinitiallyslatedforcompletionandtestingby2015,itwouldhavebeentheC25stage
andbeputthroughaseriesoftests.ISROcrossedamajormilestoneinthedevelopmentofCE20
enginefortheGSLVMKIIIvehiclebythesuccessfulhottestfor640secondsduration[19]on19February
2017atISROPropulsionComplex,Mahendragiri.Thetestdemonstratedtherepeatabilityoftheengine
performancewithallitssubsystemslikethrustchamber,gasgenerator,turbopumpsandcontrol
componentsforthefullduration.Alltheengineparameterswerecloselymatchingwiththepretest
prediction.
ThefirstC25stagewillbeusedontheGSLVIIID1mission[22]inlatemay2017launch.[23]Thismission
willputinorbittheGSAT19Ecommunicationsatellite.[24]WorkontheC25stageandCE20enginefor
GSLVMkIIIupperstagewasinitiatedin2003,theprojecthasbeensubjecttomanydelaysdueto
problemswithISRO'ssmallercryogenicengine,theCE7.5forGSLVMKIIupperstage.
