The Potential Survival of Hesychasm in the Movement of Kollyvades

Abstract: KARAMANIDOU, Anna Stef. European Enlightenment and Orthodox Christian

Illuminationsm. The Potential Survival of Hesychasm in the Movement of Kollyvades. The first
part of the paper focuses on the long conflict between East and West, which reached its peak
with the movement of the Kollyvades in the 17th and 18th century. What is of great interest
here is the fact that we do not deal with a single event in the ecclesiastical history, but with an
issue of Orthodox theology, which extends to our modern times.
In the second part, we probe into the basic Hesychastic principles of the three Kolyvades
Saints Macarius Notaras, Athanasius Parios and Nicodemus the Athonite; in particular we
explore their Filocalistic approach, their idea of the Invisible War, and their Anti-papalism.
Finally, the prominence of the Church Fathers in their work is examined along with their
contribution to the liturgical life and their views about education.

ILLUMINATIONISM. THE POTENTIAL SURVIVAL OF HESYCHASM IN THE
MOVEMENT OF KOLLYVADES. The first part of the paper focuses on the long conflict
between East and West, which reached its peak with the movement of the Kollyvades in
17th and 18th century. Very interesting is the fact that we do not deal with a single event
in the ecclesiastical history, but with an issue of Orthodox theology, which extends to our
modern times. The European Enlightenment is viewed as distinguishing itself from the
Orthodox Christian tradition of Hesychasm. At the same time, the Greek Enlightenment
is confronted with its main representatives, such as Adamantios Koraes, what resulted
in controversial events. The secularised west spirit had already corrupted Orthodoxy.
Innovations, concerning the orthodox tradition of Hesychasm, were attempted to establish,
even on Mount Athos. The Kollyvades controversy, known as , burst
out in the Skete of Saint Anne because of the anti-traditional transfer of the memorial service
(Kollyva) from Saturday to Sunday. Pioneers of the Kollyvades movement were the three new
Saints of the Church, Macarius Notaras, Athanasius Parios and Nicodemus the Athonite.
Thespiritual movement of Kollyvades enlightened the whole Orthodox Church. Their word
and their writings bore influence of original spiritual works of the Hesychastic tradition.
In the second part, we probe into the basic Hesychastic principles of the three Kolyvades
Saints Macarius Notaras, Athanasius Parios and Nicodemus the Athonite; in particular, we
explore their Filocalistic approach, their idea of the Invisible War, and their Anti-papalism.
Finally, the influence of the Church Fathers in their works is examined, along with their
contribution to the liturgical life of our Church and their views of education.
