Conditional Type 1
Form: If + simple present + simple future
Use: Conditional Type 1 is used to express a possible action in the future
Example: If I have enough time, I'll watch the football match.
I may have time to watch the match but I'm not sure about it.
Conditional Type 2
Form: If + simple past + would + base form
Use: conditional type 2 is used for unreal impossible situations. This conditional provides an imaginary
result for a given situation.
Were / Was
In conditional type 2, we usually use in the if clause "were" instead of "was" even if the pronoun is I, he,
she or it. "were"
Example: If I were a millionaire, I would buy a castle.
If I had a lot of money, I would travel around the world.
Conditional Type 3
Form: If + past perfect + would have + past participle
Use: Conditional Sentences Type 3 refer to situations in the past. They express hypothetical results to past
given situations.
Example:
If he had been careful, he wouldn't have had that terrible accident.
Sometimes in the past, he was careless. He drove so fast. So he had a terrible accident.
If I had revised my lessons, I would have had a good mark.
I didnt have a good mark because I didnt revise my lessons.
2- Wish
Present wish If only } + simple past
Subject + wish } + simple past
It is a situation in the present that we dont like or we like to have it the other way.
Tom lives far from school so he usually arrives late.
Tom: I wish I didnt live far from the school.
If only I didnt live far from the school.
It is a situation in the past that we didnt like or we liked to have it the other way.
Tom had an accident because he drove very fact.
Tom: If only I hadnt driven very fast.
I wish I hadnt driven very fast.
TIP: Look at the verb, if it is affirmative then change it to negative and if it is negative change it to
affirmative.
