I. Why is this project important (In 2-3 paragraphs, describe the need for the project.)?

As teachers, we know that students do not all learn in the same way. This project is important
because it provides supports for a variety learning situations and diverse groups of students. The
project also expands learning opportunities in numerous ways while bringing new technology
into the classroom.

The LiveScribe Echo Smartpens have countless potential uses within the classroom setting.
Students will be able to utilize the Smartpens when computers at home are not available,
leveling the playing field when studying. They also will assist students with supports while
taking notes during lectures and lessons, which will provide valuable support to ELL students,
students with disabilities, or any students needing repetition.

This project not only provides necessary supports for students but also countless ways to expand
learning through the use of the LiveScribe Echo Smartpens.

II. What would you like to accomplish (In 2-3 paragraphs, describe the unit or lesson and list
instructional objectives.)?

The LiveScribe Smartpens have the ability to record and playback information that was
presented orally while written information was recorded. First and foremost, students will
utilize the pen to assist with notetaking. Struggling students will be able to record the entire
lecture while taking notes. This will allow playback of teacher instructions at any time without
the need for a computer. Students also can utilize the Smartpen to record instructions presented
before an assignment. There will not be the need to ask the teacher to repeat the directions
ELL students, students with disabilities, and any other students that struggle with oral
instructions will be able to replay them as many times as necessary. The pens can also be used

to deliver directions to students that were absent and missed the initial lesson/activity. This
would lessen the negative impact of students missing lessons and activities.

To support the building of vocabulary, the LiveScribe Smartpens will be used on a talking
word wall. The teacher will be able to add LiveScribe dot paper shapes to the word wall. When
the students tap them with the LiveScribe Smartpen, they will hear additional vocabulary
information. This can include the definition, explanation, examples, root words, etc. This
technology could also be used in countless other ways to bring an interactive element to the
classroom.

III. How will you complete the work? (In 1-2 paragraphs for each section, describe how the project
will be completed.)

A. Describe how the instructional objectives will be met.

Utilization of the pens will assist students in note-taking and support their learning in
multiple subject areas. Students will also receive important support with vocabulary
acquisition through the interactive word wall using the LiveScribe sticky notes. The end
goal is to increase student achievement on classroom tests where the pen was used for
vocabulary enhancement and notetaking/review.

B. Describe the time involved (project length including amount of time each day/week).

Students will utilize the pens on a daily basis throughout the entire school year. The amount
of time each day will depend on the time spent on teacher directions, lectures, and/or oral
review of material.

C. Describe the people involved (grade level/subject & # of students, teachers and/or staff).

4th Grade Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies. These pens will be used by up to 60
students and one teacher. Seven students in each of two classes will utilize them on a regular
basis, based on individual needs.

D. Describe the materials needed for the project.

The project materials needed include 7 LiveScribe Echo Smartpens, Smartpen paper, and
LiveScribe sticky notes.

IV. What is the timeline for assessing accomplishments and objectives (In 1-2 paragraphs, describe
program evaluation procedure.)?

Full implementation of the LiveScribe Echo Smartpens will occur within the first year. Students
will receive training on the pens in the Fall and continue to utilize them all year. Some students
will only use the pens for the interactive word wall and other interactive lessons. Students
designated as in need will utilize the pens more regularly during all lectures and oral lessons.

progress will be assessed and reported to students, parents, teachers, and others.)?

Student progress will be assessed both formally and informally. Students will be surveyed on the
use of the Smartpens and how they feel it positively affected their learning. Student pre-tests and
post-tests on unit assessments in Social Studies and Science will determine if the note taking
assistance and vocabulary support provided from the Smartpen positively impacted student
learning.

Parents of students that are utilizing the Smartpen to assist with their learning will receive
detailed information and instructions about the technology at the beginning of the year. The
growth in scores will be discussed during parent teacher conferences.
