Department of Mechanical Engineering

Objectives and Outcomes

Faculty Name : Mr. K Durga Rao Theory

Subject :Design of Machine Elements-I(ME 317)
Year and Sem. : III B.Tech. I Sem.

Objective of the Course : To impart knowledge of the basic engineering design against static and dynamic loading by considering strength and rigidity. To
train individual components design methodology and selection procedure for various industrial applications.
Outcome of the Course: At the end of this course student acquire handsome experience in designing various machine components undergoing static,
dynamic loads. Students have the ability to design, analyze and sizing of the shafts, keys and couplings. Students are in a position to design the welded,
threaded joints.
Unit wise Objectives:

Unit-I(Design against static loads)

Objective: To teach the student about design procedure of any machine component, concept of principal stresses and its importance in design process. To
have the knowledge about the engineering materials, its mechanical properties. To know about the factor of safety and its usage in design process.
Outcome: Students are in a position to design, analyze the simple mechanical components subjected to static loads.

Unit-II(Design against Fluctuating loads)

Objective: To make the students to understand about the concept of stress concentration and its affect in component failure. To impart knowledge about the
fluctuating loads and design component for infinite and finite life conditions.
Outcome: At the end of this concept student attains ability to design and analyze the component dimensions for fluctuating loads.

Unit-III(Design of fasteners)
Objective: To provide a good experience about the designing of threaded joints and riveted joints subjected to axial and eccentric loads.
Outcome: Student are in a position to select the proper size of bolts, nuts for various external loads and also have good skills in designing and drawing of
riveted joints.
Unit-IV(Design of welded joints, joints)
Objective: To provide a good experience about the designing of welded joints subjected to axial and eccentric loads. To make the student understand the
various failures of joints subjected to static loads.
Outcome: Student are in a position to design and analyze the welded joints for various external loads and also have good skills in designing and drawing of
cotter and knuckle joints.

Unit-V(Design of shafts, keys and couplings)

Objective: To make the students to understand about the torque transmission capacity of shafts, stresses in keys and design of couplings
Outcome: At the end of this unit students will acquire experience in sizing of shaft dimensions for power transmission devices. They also have the good
experience in drawing and designing of various couplings.
