In Europe in the Middle Ages, large fields were often divided into strips. With individual
farming they strip as intensively as possible. Since little was understood about the
nutrients that plants need and the use of fertilizers, the soil in these trips soon became
exhausted, with poorer and poorer yields resulting. The agricultural revolution was a
change in farming practice that took place gradually during the eighteen century. The
technique of resting ground for a year (leaving it fallow) and rotating crops, so that the
same crop was not ground year after year on the same plot, was tested and found to
improve harvests. A two-year rotation, and later three-and four-year rotations came to the
widely practiced.
You may have known the difference between money market and stock exchange.
Money market is the body of bankers, financiers, etc whose operations decide the rates
of interest on borrowed capital. Stock exchange is a place where stocks and shares are
bought and sold. Every big city in the world has a stock exchange such as New York,
London, Jakarta, even Surabaya. These cities are financial centres.
Many of the world’s business activities today is impossible without stocks and
bonds. Stocks and bonds are certificates that corporations sell to the public to raise
money. Starting a new company or buying new equipment for an existing company
usually requires a very large amount of money. The amount may be too large to borrow
from a bank or from several persons. The company’s finance should be strong enough to
develop productivity. To raise money, the company sells thousands, sometimes millions
of shares and stocks or thousands of rupiah worth bonds. Stocks an bonds are also
called securities. Those who buy securities are called investors. They invest money to the
company. Careful investment of their capital will result in good income
