A Comparative Approach to Contributive Factors to

Chinese and European Dra ma

Abstract : Through a co mpariso n bet ween Chinese drama and European drama as a co ntinuatio n of
Greek drama , t his paper at temp t s to explore t he distintive differences and characteristics in t he p rocess of
t heir formatio n . In terms of history of art , Chinese drama failed to evolve f ro m p rimitive dancing and
singing to drama w hereas ancient Greek drama successf ully burst into being out of t he p rimitive dancing
and singing at t he sacrifice to Dio nysus. In terms of ecology of literat ure and art , Chinese literat ure delayed
develop ment of dramatic art because of it s weakness in narrative craf t smanship w hile ancient Greek drama
developed by drawing upo n it s ancient narrative t raditio n . Again , Chinese no n - religious cult ural t raditio n
failed to dramarize it s sorcery dancing and singing , but t he ancient Greeks wit h religious ent husiasm man2
aged to t ransformed god - pleasing dancing and singing into man - pleasing dancing and singing. Finally ,
t he growt h of Chinese drama was greatly bound by it s imperial politics and agricult ural society , but ancient
Greek drama owed it s rapid growt h to it s democratic politics and co mmercial cult ure .
