20th day of April 2009

Dear Htcian,

“While I know myself as a creation of God, I am also obligated to realize and

remember that everyone else and everything else are also God's creation.”
Maya Angelou

Today’s another day. The morning I woke up I felt good things to

come in the later hours of the day.
So here how it goes, prior to hour duty at the community (2:30-
6:30 pm), while in the tricycle to HTC I am reminiscing all the
memories @ Santa Lourdes, since it was my previous assignment
community. I keep on asking myself “am I ready to be there again?”
and “is my new classmates alright, am I disturbed with their presence,
yes or no?”
Then when I arrived at school I went to Beah’s Canteen and wait
there while waiting for my other classmates to arrive. When some of
them arrived namely Ms. Realon and Ms. Mellomeda, we shared our
thoughts and opinions about our expectations at our community this
summer.
Then 2:00 pm came, we went inside the jeepney and then,
prepared ourselves for the long trip. Then later our C.I. came. As I
finished checking our attendance, I noticed that someone is missing.
So, to make the ride earlier, I asked permission to Sir Rabang to search
for our missing classmate inside the HTC Campus. So, inside HTC I
asked some people I know if they know our missing classmate or have
seen him inside. All of them said no, except for one who stated that he
saw our missing classmate a week ago. So after that, I came back at
the jeepney and informed our C.I. that he’s really wasn’t there.
Then, with the group composed of 9 members we proceeded to
the trip to Sta. Lourdes. There, we saw new faces at Sta. Lourdes,
some we’re our classmates but it was really their first time in RLE at
Purok Unang Lahi, Sta. Lourdes namely Ms. Ortiz and Mr. Alcorano.
We first visited the Brgy. Hall of Sta. Lourdes where we saw the
Brgy. Captain and introduced ourselves and explained our task at
Purok Unang Lahi for the week. He warmly welcomed us all and he’s
glad with the performance of HTCians in their place in the last years.
We also had met the other officials there. Then, we visited the
assigned midwife named Ma’am Paduga, whom we also introduced
ourselves, stated our purpose for the week and explained the duration
of our community duty. She said that if we want we can assist them on
Thursday for vaccination and agreed so. After that we went directly to
the Purok Hall of Unang Lahi.
Upon arrival, we saw a big surprise at the Purok Unang Lahi Hall.
We saw that the windows were damaged, the door don’t have any
padlock, the dry leaves scattered all over the place and it was obvious
that it wasn’t used for weeks or months. Then, prior to that the group
cleaned the area first before starting the other remaining goals for the
day.
Since there wasn’t enough available broom at the hall; I decided
to ask one from Ate Myrna. Then after having the broom, I said thank
you to Are Myrna and proceed at the hall and start cleaning.
After sweeping the leaves and other mess, we decided to start
our objectives for that which is the continuation of the courtesy call
and ocular survey.
Then with the group, we first went to the house of Ate Myrna for
our courtesy call. So we introduced ourselves to her and explained
what we are going to do for the whole week with the partnership with
them. Then we went to Nanay Clarette who was the Purok Chieftain,
and introduced ourselves and explained our goals for the one-week
duty. She warmly welcomed us and then her husband arrived. One of
my classmates interacted with her husband and we we’re really
amazed because his health improved a lot since our last semester
duty. We enjoyed talking and listening to Nay Clarette. She also said
that the Purok Hall wasn’t really functional for the past months
because there wasn’t any meeting that took place.
After that, we walked for 5-6 minutes to the BHW named Ms.
Loida Mateo, whom we introduced ourselves and explained our
purpose. We also asked her on the state of the purok’s health. She
replied that, only summer illnesses are occurring there.
Then we would went straight to one of the host families last
semester and proceed to the Secretary’s house named Ms. Aina
Verano, whom we introduced ourselves and explained our purposes for
the week. We also asked her about the state of health of the Purok and
she replied that she wasn’t updated yet because in the past few
months no meeting had occurred and she was in Brooke’s Point for her
treatment. So after that we said thank you and continue walking for
the ocular survey and courtesy call to the officials.
It’s a 6-10 minutes of walking when we arrived at the house of
the Purok President Delia Ate. So we introduced ourselves, explained
our stay there, and asked questions. She reacted that in the last few
months no meeting happened in the Purok because people were so
busy. We asked her many questions which she has able to answer. I
was also happy we she pointed me and Ms. Daquer that she
remembered me because of the Mother’s class about Neem Tree. Then
after that we parted our ways and said thank you for the warm
welcome she had given.
Then we walked again for 6-10 minutes and started our ARFAS
with Mr. Tangug as our Facilitator. It was a very memorable ARFAS for
me because I said that “because of Sta. Lourdes I grew as a person
and improved out myself…”. I also added that, “...pagdating ko palang
sa gate ng Purok Hall, marami akong naalala!”

being
natural with what you do. In every person, we should be able to

ourselves well. Through listening and asking questions we learn
something.
Feeling the warmness of the community is an experience
everyone will never forget! Through our partnership we can build a
better future.

Dear Htcian,

"We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and

adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we
seek them with our eyes open."
-- Jawaharal Nehru
It’s again another enjoyable day. I arrived at school an hour
before 2:30 pm and I’m thinking what’s in store for us this day. I
started writing and checking the attendance and suddenly the jeepney
came and I went straight there to continue checking the attendance.
Still, our ‘missing classmate’ is literally missing in action. After 30
minutes, we departed to Sta. Lourdes.
When we arrived there, we prepared and made plans for the long
walk first. Then, we proceed to the long walk and for our continuation
of the ocular survey on the Purok Unang Lahi. Our objectives were to
inform the officials and the mothers about the feeding, the children’s
and mother’s classes are our activities for tomorrow and also to
appreciate the environment especially for the new members.
First we divided our group into two and went to the some of the
households and officials to invite them. Some of them verbalized
they’re coming and some aren’t sure. Unexpectedly, almost all officials
we’re absent during our visit. So, it was quite hard for us to think if our
activity will be successful. During our walk, I and Ms. Mangundayao
talked about what we’ll cook, I suggested pancit and some suggested
chicken soup. For the mother’s class I suggested about teaching
charcoal therapy especially on the mothers. So after that, when we
finished our task we realized that people we’re really busy that day
because of their absence. Coping with the situation needs flexibility
and learn to think out of the box is the best solution.
Then we returned to the Purok Hall and continue doing our plans.
Ms. Mangundayao leaded us on the meeting. She first divided the
group into 3: one for the feeding and cooking, then 1 for the children’s
class, and 1 group composed for the mother’s class. For the food, as
suggested by yours truly is pancit and some suggested Chicken soup
(sopas). Everyone voted out for Chicken soup or sopas. Then for the

of the box is the best solution.”
Mother’s class, Ms. Mangundayao stated that I should just be ready.
So, I replied that I’ll prepare the lesson about charcoal topic and Ms.
Ortiz will serve as my companion.
Later on, me, Ms. Ortiz and Ms. Mellomeda prepared the poster
with the announcement for tomorrow. So when the jeep arrived we
prepared it and plan to post it to one of the houses.
Then after the long walk we proceed to our planning. And do our
ARFAS. Then we went home. Upon the travel, I asked the driver and
our C.I. if we can stop for a while to post the announcement and they
agreed. Sir Rabang said that I should asked permission first to the
owner of the house or store. There I asked permission and the house
owner said it’s alright so I posted it.
Then we proceed to the ride. It was an enjoyable activity.

Dear Htcian,

"Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world
together"

I arrived at school at 1:00 pm. I continue writing the information

on the Manila paper about our report for the Mother’s Class which is all
about the uses of Charcoal at the Kubo near the basketball court. Then
Ms. Realon, Ms. Ortiz, Ms. Realon arrived and also prepared the other
needed items.
At about 2:00 pm we we’re called because the jeepney is already
there. While waiting for my other classmates, I bought banana cue and
the rain poured for 3 minutes. My classmates also bought banana cue.
Then after couple of minutes we travelled to Sta. Lourdes. After
the long trip, we saw that some of the children we’re already there
waiting for us. After the short preparation for our individual tasking we
started doing our respectful tasks. Suddenly, the rain came. I was a bit
worried, because that’s a bad sign that mothers really won’t come. And
after 15 or 20 minutes I am still expecting the arrival of some mothers
but sadly none came. So being flexible, I erased my worry that time
and help my other classmates in their tasking especially in the
children’s class.
While in the children’s class, I observed that the children were
really interested and happy with the lesson. We reviewed them about
the alphabet, the purpose of good hygiene and we ask them questions
and gave them some prizes.
We had observed that hygiene were really their main health
problem so as part of children’s class we let them to wash their hands
by using nail brush and soap.
But as students, mistakes were still present especially when we
taught some of the children to make the sign of the cross we forgot
that some of them aren’t Catholic. Next time, lessons must be learned.

Dear Htcian,

When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is

lost; when character is lost, all is lost.

When the jeepney arrived at school, we went inside and

prepared ourselves. Then after 30 minutes we went away to Sta.
Lourdes.
As promised by the group to the midwife last Monday we directly
went to Brgy. Hall for our expected health teaching about the
Benedict’s test and Acetic Test and assessing in the immunization. But
sadly, according to the officials, the mothers came in the morning and
the BHWs were busy that day and can’t entertain us. So, Ms.
Mangundayao asked the BHWs when will they be available and may be
next they can help us and teach the important learning which the
community can really get something big.
After the sad news, Sir said we should go to the Purok Unang
Lahi Hall. So we walk for about 15-30 minutes. It was really our first
time to walk from Sta. Lourdes Brgy. Hall to Purok Unang Lahi Hall. It
was a very enjoyable walk. I then Ms. Ortiz and Ms. Realon was in one
row while walking, we talked and laughed.
When we arrived there we rested for 10 minutes. And Ms. Ortiz
and Ms. Mangundayao prepared their post for the health teaching
about Benedict’s test and Acetic test. Benedict’s test is made to find
out the presence sugar in a sample (e.g. urine). A test that detects the
presence of albumin proteins in the urine. The urine is heated until
cloudy and then several drops of acetic acid are added. If cloudiness
increases that the test is positive for albumin.
It was my first to learn the said tests. I learned that it was a very
vital test which will give the users a warning if something is wrong.
Then, when we’re all finished doing the test. Sir Rabang allowed
us to do our thing and we’ll proceed to our ARFAS. When the ARFAS
started I heard some good and bad sentiments from my classmates. I
realized that through the group many things were learned by me.
Sir Rabang also expressed his partial reactions and words to the
group. He stated that he’ll express the remaining things soon.

“It was my first to

learn it. I learned that

users a warning if

Too Much or Too Little Sleep
Increases Risk of Diabetes

Photo: iStockphoto.com

ScienceDaily (Apr. 23, 2009) — Researchers at Université Laval's

Faculty of Medicine have found that people who sleep too much or not
enough are at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes or impaired
glucose tolerance. The risk is 2½ times higher for people who sleep
less than 7 hours or more than 8 hours a night. The findings were
published recently on the website of the journal Sleep Medicine.

The researchers arrived at this conclusion after analyzing the life

habits of 276 subjects over a 6-year period. They determined that over
this time span, approximately 20% of those with long and short sleep
duration developed type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance
versus only 7% among subjects who were average duration sleepers.
Even after taking into account the effect attributable to differences in
body mass among the subjects, the risk of diabetes and insulin
resistance was still twice as high among those with longer and shorter
sleep duration than average sleepers.

The researchers also point out that diabetes is not the only risk
associated with sleep duration. A growing number of studies have shed
light on a similar relationship between sleep and obesity,
cardiovascular disease, and overall mortality. The authors observe that
among adults, between 7 and 8 hours of nighttime sleep appears to be
the optimum duration to protect against common diseases and
premature death.

However, it seems that fewer and fewer people sleep the

optimum number of hours. A survey conducted in 1960 showed that
American adults slept an average of 8 to 8.9 hours a night. By 1995,
that average had dropped to 7 hours. A study conducted in 2004 by
the National Center

for Health Statistics found that one-third of adults aged 30 to 64

slept less than 6 hours a night.

The authors of the study are Jean-Philippe Chaput, Angelo

Tremblay, and Jean-Pierre Després of Université Laval, Claude
Bouchard of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton-
Rouge, and Arne Astrup from the University of Copenhagen.

Risk Of Diabetes. ScienceDaily. Retrieved May 6, 2009, from

o Summary:
According to the study of Universite Laval’s Faculty of Medicine
they had found out that persons with less or more sleep are at great
risk of developing impaired glucose tolerance a.k.a. Type 2 Diabetes.
This finding was published at the Sleep Medicine journal and states
that people who sleep less than 7 hours or more than 8 hours per night
has 2.5 times high at risk of developing it.
This research came into reality after they analyzed the 276
subjects over 6 years. Through this time span 20% of those subjects
with long and short sleep developed type 2 diabetes a 7% of the
subjects were average duration sleepers. Although BMI was
attributable, still it showed that diabetes – risk and insulin resistance
was still on those people who mostly and lessen gets sleep.
They also stated that type 2 diabetes isn’t only the risk for the
abovementioned subjects. It also includes cardiovascular disease and
overall mortality. The authors also stated that 7 or 8 hours of good
night sleeps appear to be the optimum duration to protect against
common diseases and premature death.
The duration of sleep also varied in years because in the survey
conducted in 1960 American adults sleeps an 8 to 8.9 hours of average
sleep and in 1995, it dropped to 7 hours. In the NCHS-conducted study
(2004) it found out that one-third of adults aged 30-64 years old sleep
less than 6 hours/night.

o Comment or Reaction:
After reading the article, only one thing came to my mind and
that is

“Everyone are at great risk of acquiring diabetes”. Through these

generations lifestyle people are really in danger of various diseases or
illness.

o Application:
The article is very helpful and an eye-opener. This can be applied
in our health teaching/s. Through that we can give the community the
knowledge for them to prioritize a good night sleep and give emphasis
on its major health benefits.

o Agree or disagree? Why?

I am in agreement with the article because of its given vital data.
It interestingly showed how life changes ‘dangerously’. ‘Dangerously’
in the sense that even life changes with ease there are still negative
things that occurs naturally. Life changes easily and through this fast
phase we forget of our own safety and health. Though the technology
advances there are things we can never change.

o Reason/s of choosing this

article:
I choose this article based on the following reasons: first, the
title caught my attention then, secondly because of my own
experience as a BSN student who truly lacks sleep and lastly because
during the community exposure I learned on how to do the Benedict’s
test which the result tells if a person is at risk of diabetes and so
diabetes appeared to my mind.

o Relationship with the country’s

problem:
Yes, it is related to our country since diabetes is in every Filipino
as what is obviously pictured by the 2006 Philippine Health Care
Statistics that DM is 9th of the top 10 causes of mortality with 4.1%
affected population. Using a little math, and assuming those figures
are correct, diabetes has about a 2.09 percent prevalence rate in
the recent years. The same source mentioned that if the trends do not
change, the diabetic population in the Philippines will balloon to 15
million by 2010.
