open to a multitude of

I would say that international
schools are by their nature
different from local public schools.
International schools are steeped
in the development of the whole

Oftentimes, facilities within a
school become the benchmark as
to how good the school is and
parents use that as a yardstick to
justify the cost of sending their
child to an international school.
The notion that better facilities
mean better education is still a
general perception among many
parents.
Effective learning can take
place in any school regardless of
facilities. Valuable extracurricular
activities may not need specialist
equipment or facilities.
Many schools are now
experimenting with open
environments and unstructured
spaces. However, talented
educators can make learning
happen anywhere, says Dr Nicola
Brown, assistant principal of
St Josephs Institution International
School Malaysia.
Dr Brown stresses that it is more
important for a school to have the
right kind of educators who will be
able to make good use of the
facilities provided in conducting a
platform that is conducive to
effective learning.

IT is examination season at
international schools and colleges
once again. Years 11 and 13
students have nearly completed
their International General
Certificate of Secondary Education
(IGCSE), General Certificate of
Secondary Education (GCSE) and
A-Levels examinations by the
various examination boards.
The examinations bring an end
to one stage of their education and
prepare them for the next.
Examinations improve learning
and help students focus on their
learning. Without these, there is no
challenge.
Examinations are a summative
assessment that puts a grade to
learning, which is a symbol of
attainment by many parents,
giving them bragging rights. More
importantly, that number tells the
child where he stands against the
rest of the cohort and how much
more he can achieve.
Life is a series of examinations
where you are assessed constantly
and evaluated before being judged.
After completing Form Five or
Year 11, you take another
programme perhaps the A-Levels.
Then, you move to the university

another three or four years,

examinations before you graduate.
When you apply for a job, your
resume is assessed, answers
evaluated and abilities tested.
Now you settle in your new job,
where you are constantly being
evaluated and assessed. Your
decisions and leadership skills are
scrutinised. Your performance is
discussed formally at appraisals.
Just as examinations never end, so
does learning. We are learning all
the time.
Your first paper qualification, be
it the IGCSE or GCSE, is merely a
stepping stone to the next stage of
education, which not only prepares
students for the subjects they have
studied over the past few years but
also to face the next cycle of
challenges.
With this first set of
examinations out of the way,
students will recognise that they
have overcome the hardships they
faced on the road to this very
moment and survived the odds,
thus making them stronger
individuals.
Some schools have gone on to
having coursework. This is merely
another form of assessment on a
long-term basis. The constant
assessment and feedback can take
its toll on a student who does not
have the right kind of work ethics
suited for coursework.
Another student may thrive in
that environment but not in a
summative examination. We are
all different, so finding the right
type of assessment for yourself is
paramount to finding a measure of
success in school.
Coursework can help prepare a
student for the next stage in
education. However, examinations
have always been the go-to when

The design courses offered at IGBIS follow
two strands product design (fashion, food,
engineering and robotics) and digital design
(web and media).

A-LEVELS represents the gold standard for
admission to the worlds top universities.
Therefore, Kolej Tuanku Jaafar (KTJ) is
ramping up its efforts to provide the regions
best sixth form experience.
The KTJ Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13)
currently hosts 280 students and has set a
maximum of 300 students.
In 2015 and last year, the sixth form

Reach the right destination

THE number of international schools in
Malaysia has increased tremendously in the
last five years. Due to the high demand for
an international school education, more
schools will be opening their doors in the
coming year, thus providing parents with
more options.
There is a wide range of international
schools in Malaysia offering different
curricula, facilities and teaching staff.
Therefore, it is important for parents who

Sharing knowledge
A series of talks on various topics has been
organised for both days of the fair.
Ng Kim Huat from Cambridge
International Examinations will start off the
talks on June 17 by sharing his knowledge
and experience regarding the Cambridge
International General Certificate of
Secondary Education (IGCSE) followed
by a Q&A session.
The next three talks will be centred on
supporting your childs learning at home,
how to choose the right school for your
child and education trends.
Judy Meiners will provide tips on how to
support childrens learning at home while
Elizabeth Wong will share her experience on
what to look for in an international school
from a parents perspective.
For the last talk of the day, Greg Parry will
educate parents on the latest trends in
education.
On June 18, parents will benefit from a
talk by Dr Goh Chee Leong, where he guides
parents on choosing a school that fits their
childs needs, personality and interests.
Next, Santhi Latha will share her expertise
on the advantages of an international
education. Visitors can also learn more
about the Victorian Certificate of Education
(VCE) from Blair Cooper.
Last but not least, Anne Tham will share
her advice with parents on how to raise
successful and happy children.
