MSN PROGRAM MISSION

Committed to the mission and values of the University and building upon the knowledge and
skills of the baccalaureate-prepared nurse, the mission of the MSN program is to prepare
students for advanced nursing practice as leaders, change agents, and innovators in the areas of
administration and education (USM, 2017, p. 230).

Outcome 1.
Graduates of the MSN program will integrate comprehensive assessment, theory, evidence,
clinical judgment, research, patient values, and inter-professional perspectives in advance
nursing practice for diverse populations (USM, 2017, p. 230).
NU 641, Statistics in HealthCare, prepared me to look at communities as a whole and not as
individual sections to have a greater understanding of the demographics and the issues that
plague diverse populations. I was taught that when performing research to keep an open-mind
and not to judge quickly, but to use the data to help form my conclusion.

Outcome 2.
Graduates of the MSN program will utilize information and technology to communicate,
educate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision making (USM, 2017, p. 230).
NU 611, Informatics in Nursing, had the class dive into the technological side of nursing. I
discovered that nursing has changed from the simple patient-nurse bedside care, to looking at the
patient and family in a holistic manner. This examination now includes technology. For
instance, patients now are able to meet their physicians online, schedule appointments, and refill
medications all by utilizing their computer. When it comes to decision making, I can research a
report or article quickly on the internet and use that information to help build an argument for
patient/Soldier advocacy.

Outcome 3.
Graduates of the MSN program will synthesize ethical, economic, legal, and political factors
that influence health care to influence the organization and financing of health care delivery and
educational delivery systems (USM, 2017, p. 230).
NU 705, Health Care Policy & Ethics, was a great course that laid the foundation for me. I
discovered that by nature it is easy to go provide care for patients and their families that are need,
but I need to know the policies and procedures that govern that care. In nursing, we all have a
scope of practice that leads us in the right direction and if we do not know that scope, then we
are aimlessly providing care. Having a greater understanding of the Affordable Care Act has
made me a more knowledgeable nurse that allows me to discuss best practices with my leaders.
Outcome 4.
Graduates of the MSN program will, collaborate to design, coordinate, and evaluate patient-
centered health care as a leader or member of an inter-professional team (USM, 2017, p. 230).
HC MGT 715, Communication and Relationship Building, was a course built on working as a
team. I worked in a group with two other student professionals to design a presentation that
influenced childhood nutrition. Halfway through our project, one member unexpectedly had to
leave the course. This was a great example of how things can change quickly in the health care
profession and as leaders we must be able to adapt and overcome to those sudden changes.

Outcome 5.
Graduates of the MSN program will, contribute to nursing practice to improve health care
outcomes by translating evidence into practice (USM, 2017, p. 230).
NU 745, Nursing Practicum I, we were focused on producing a project that would affect change
within our organization. My project was directed towards improving communication in the
Army Reserves in an effort to improve the medical readiness of our Soldiers. As a health care
leader in the reserves, I want to make sure that every Soldier that is within our unit is physically
and mentally ready to go and fight for our country.

Outcome 6.
Graduates of the MSN program will, integrate evidence based findings for patient-centered and
culturally responsive strategies for clinical prevention and health promotion for diverse
populations and environments (USM, 2017, p. 230).
NU 712, Quality and Safety, jumped into the process of trying to lower the instances of injuries
that happen in the healthcare setting. We watched the video, Chasing Zero: Winning the War on
Healthcare Harm, with stories of people that have experienced what harm can to do to patients.
I recognized that as a nurse that each day I have an opportunity to prevent harm from occurring
to Soldiers. This will require me to be culturally sensitive to others and understand that a system
that works for one person will not always work for another.

Outcome 7.
Graduates of the MSN program will, advocate for policies to improve population health, access
to quality care and the profession of nursing (USM, 2017, p. 230).
NU 703, Analysis & Utilization of Research, taught me that research gives me a voice. I have
seen at times when I have a compliant about a policy or a procedure, that without sufficient
evidence, my compliant can go unnoticed. Research has taught me how to search to find the
answer to improve the nursing profession and utilize that data to help build a strong argument to
advocate on the side of the patient.

Outcome 8.
Graduates of the MSN program will, provide evidence of professional and personal goal
development and activities (USM, 2017, p. 230).
NU 701, Foundations of Advanced Nursing Practice, challenged me to look at nursing education
and where it has progressed from over the years. Personally, when I was a teenager coming out
of high school, I still had no idea what I wanted to do for my future. After completing my ADN
in 2007 and joining the Army in 2010, my passion to care for people has grown. Professionally,
I desire to be a blessing to others by helping them achieve their dreams in the nursing field. My
personal goals are similar; strive to take this wealth of knowledge that I have attained and use it
for the greater good.

Outcome 9.
Graduates of the MSN program will, Integrate the 5 Cs of caring commitment, conscience,
competence, compassion, and confidence in advance nursing practice (USM, 2017, p. 230).
All of the courses I have taken at USM have focused on improving the 5 Cs of Caring. I truly
feel that on a personal level, God has put me here on earth to care for others and be an example
for others to see. Commitment, conscience, competence, compassion, and confidence are all
attributes that I strive to display, not just on the job, but off the job as well. For me, it is a way of
life.
