The workplace observation was with the marketing department of pet
care, a division of Mars Inc. The office is designed in an open payout.
There are sections of workstations, which they refer to as pods which
seats about five members of the team. There is no visual or
acoustical privacy, which allows each member to engage with each
other at any given time. Due to company policy, there is minimal
personal items allowed on the workstation so the surfaces remain
uncluttered and available for more productivity. There is one double
drawer file cabinet per station and that is the extent of the storage for
the entire floor.
Electrical and data connections are adequate for each station. The
chairs seemed to allow for better ergonomics by supporting the back,
arms, and legs. The workstations are not equipped to address the
reaching aspect of the four pillars and many employees have to use
the surface of the desk for the keyboard and mouse. One wall of the
office perimeter is lined with windows, which allows natural light to filter
in, yet during the afternoon hours, the employees that are facing away
from the windows do receive glare on the screen of the computers.
The artificial lighting design is also adequate for overcast days and for
days that have shorter sun exposure.

 Project Statement
The Magnolia Hotel, located in Nashville, has requested the first and second floor to be designed with co-working and corporate offices in their new flagship hotel. The
spaces to be designed are approximately 8,100 sf. The first floor will be house co-working spaces adjacent to the hotel lobby. While the second floor will be designed for
the corporate offices, including the executive offices, marketing, sales and catering, corporate booking reservations, accounting, and the information technology
department. There will also be a number of meeting spaces available.

The hotel has requested a sculptural staircase to be added in the open area then to enclose the second floor to the staircase to give the second floor additional floor
space. The co-working space will include a self-serve kitchen with a minimum seating for 12, 2 office spaces, conference room, co-working space, collaborative areas,
wireless internet and printing, and member networking.

The second floor will consist of designated sections for each department. Executive offices will include approximately 305 sf for two private offices, approximately 64 sf of
open office space, and 64 sf minimum for administrative support. Sales and catering along with corporate booking will include one private office approximately 120 sf, a
minimum of 192 sf of space for open workstations, and a work station for storage. The accounting space will include approximately 120 sf private office, a semi-private
office with 100 sf minimum, approximately 192 sf of space for open workstations, and a work station for storage and office equipment. The IT department will consist of 120
sf of space for a private office, a minimum of 128 sf for two open workstations, a work counter with bench storage and component servicing capability, climate-controlled
server room with 120 sf minimum, and a help desk. Shared spaces between each department will include a reception area, a 300 sf minimum private conference room that
will accommodate 8-12 people, 2 small meeting rooms, space for storage and office equipment along with a small kitchenette, and two unisex restrooms.

 The design concept for the hotel will embody minimalistic style while
embracing luxury and elegance. The color scheme will be subtle while
using tones that are common with the magnolia flower. Textures will be
used through the graining of the woods and the sheen of the metals.
Colors and textures will change throughout the day with the use of

 This stair concept is designed in a u-shape, or a
dogleg design. It has an intermediate landing
measuring the same width of each flight, at 48
wide. The handrail and casing of the stairs will be
tempered glass enclosed with an aluminum casing
on the top and bottom. The profile of the steps can
be seen through the glass and will be a contrasting
color to the wood of the treads and risers.
The handrails will extend both at the top and
bottom of the stair case at a minimum of 12 inches.
The staircase will need 24 risers at a height of 7
inches and the treads will be 12 inches in depth.
 This stair concept is designed with a curved
shape. The handrail will be 2 inch rounded
aluminum with tempered glass reaching all the way
to the casing of the steps. The casing will hide the
profile of the stairs and will be medium shade
stained maple.
The handrails will extend both at the top and
bottom of the stair case at a minimum of 12 inches.
The staircase will need 24 risers at a height of 7
inches and the treads will be 12 inches in depth.
Since the staircase will be curved, the inner curve
will have a 12 inch tread while the outer curved
edge will be slightly larger.
The treads of the stairs will be a lighter shade of
maple with the risers being cover with aluminum to
match the handrail.
 This stair concept is designed in a L-shape. It has
an intermediate landing measuring the same width
of each flight, at 48 wide. The handrail will be 2
inch rounded steel with steel spindles traveling
horizontal to the handrail.
The handrails will extend both at the top and
bottom of the stair case at a minimum of 12 inches.
The staircase will need 24 risers at a height of 7
inches and the treads will be 12 inches in depth.
The bottom two steps of the stair case will extend
past the railing on each side at 12 inches for the
first step, and 6 inches for the second step.

All steps on a flight of stairs shall have uniform riser height and uniform tread depth. 4 inch minimum and 7 inch maximum in height. Treads shall be 11 inches minimum in
depth.
The radius of curvature at the leading edge of the tread shall be 1/2 inch maximum. Nosings that project beyond risers shall have the underside of the leading edge curved
or beveled. Risers shall be permitted to slope under the tread at an angle of 30 degrees maximum from vertical. The permitted projection of the nosing shall be 1 1/2 inches
maximum over the tread or floor below.
Stairs shall have handrails comply with Section 505.
Lighting facilities shall be capable of providing 10 foot-candles (108 lux) of illuminance measured at the center of tread surfaces and on landing surfaces within 24 inches of
step nosings.
Handrails should be provided on both sides of stairs and ramps.
Handrails shall be continuous within the full length of each stair flight or ramp run. Inside handrails on switchback or dogleg stairs or ramps shall be continuous between
flights or runs. Other handrails shall comply with Section 505.10 and 307.
Top of gripping of handrails shall be 34 inches minimum and 38 inches maximum vertically above stair nosings, ramp surfaces and walking surfaces. Handrails shall be at a
consistent height above stair nosings, ramp surfaces and walking surfaces.
Clearance between handrail gripping surface and adjacent surfaces shall be 1 1/2 inches minimum.
Gripping surfaces shall be continuous, without interruption by newel posts, other construction elements, or obstructions.
At the top of a stair flight, handrails shall extend horizontally above the landing for 12 inches minimum beginning directly above the landing surface, or shall be continuous
to the handrail of an adjacent stair flight. At the bottom of the stair flight, handrails shall extend at the slope of the stair flight for a horizontal distance equal to one tread
depth beyond the bottom tread nosing.

The most important aspects that I gained throughout this course and project is that researching the needs of each person and
how each department within the company works together. It was important to keep these needs in thought while each stage of the
design process. Understanding the pros and cons of each type of office space allowed to determine which would work better for the
entire design while also being useful to the person that would occupy the specific space.
Learning how to construct a Gantt chart was important, not only for the designer to keep good pace with the design process and
development but to also keep all others involved in the construction of the project aware of installations and contingencies that may
occur during the project and how to stay on schedule.
The stair design was the most interesting portion of the project. It was important to research all of the building codes related to
stair design, to not only make it a safe and accessible design, but to also prepare for the designing of a staircase without having to
later incorporate or change any of the design details to comply with the building codes.
This course gave me a better understanding of the commercial design process and allowed me to change my opinion on how
commercial design seemed limited. There are many details and research to be done in commercial design and I have gained a
deeper respect in that aspect.
