3 This is the approximate number of the original works of this type surveyed
in]. B. SCHNEYER, Repertorium der !ateinischen Sermones des Mitte!a!ters,
Munster, 1972-80. The number would have been much higher if we have includ-
ed in our count also close adaptations and revisions.
DESTRUCTION OF JERUSALEM SUNDAY 255
day, have been excluded from our enquiry. This choice was deter-
mined by the assumption that elements specific to this particular
Sunday should offer better insight into its nature than those that
recurr almost permanently throughout the liturgical year. While
the first imprint their particular character, the others derive their
significance each time from the context of the service into which
they are integrated. The hymns belong, in principle, to the first
category, but they too were excluded because they lack that
measure of universality which characterizes the other elements 4
The information received from the structural criteria is of interest
from a formal point of view, as it enables us to reconstruct the
Do]S as a , , block'' of liturgical acts and observe its evolution in
its different phases. It also reveals the historical and the theological
content of this sunday, as it was formulated and transmitted to the
worshipping community through these three parts of the service.
The chronological criteria enable us to locate the DoJS in the
larger framework of the liturgical and the civil year and, in con-
sequence, to determine its liturgical context as well as its historical
references.

(in the context of the present study) arose out of their introduc-
tion of a new Sunday formulary - the 4th Sunday, closing the
June fast - and their corresponding failure to make place for the
new formulary by moving the entire set, beginning with the
, , new'' 5th Sunday. The 3rd Sunday - which opens the fast -
as well as the three ferial formularies and the 4th Sunday which
closes the fast, were all inscribed between the dates of 12 and 15
June. The 4th Sunday had therefore to be celebrated eight days
later, between 19 and 22 June. The entire group of Sundays, from
the 5th to the 11th, was actually celebrated with a delay of eight
days in relation to the prescribed dates. The 11th Sunday,
theoretically placed between 30 July and 1 August, was actually
celebrated - according to the schedule elaborated by the 8th-
century Gelasian Sacramentaries - between 2 and 9 August. The
detailed solutions offered by these sources are of no interest here.
They prove, nevertheless, that the 8th-century Gelasians practically
renounced their attempts to stabilize an intercalated calendar, and
turned, instead, to the sequential celebration of the complete list
of Sundays, regardless on whatever date each succesive formulary
occured 48
Once the Temporal was separated from the Sanctoral, the DoJS
was released from its traditional association with 31 July and its
contiguous days. The range of its potential dating became con-
siderably larger, equivalent to the range of the Easter/Pentecost
variation, covering 35 days. It retained, however, the ordinal
number established by the 8th-century Gelasians - the 11th Sun-
day after Pentecost - up to the 14th century, and our documen-
tation suggests that this dating was more popular than the alter-
native dates 49 It allowed for a celebration of the DoJS between
26 July and 29 August. Somewhat less popular during the same
period was the alternative dating, the 10th Sunday after Pentecost.
Our first evidence to its use consists of the first part of Benedict
of Aniane' s Supplement to the Hadrianum, usually dated to
about 810-815 50 , but it disappears again from our sources till the
