DIALYSIS & OSMOSIS

Introduction:

Osmosis is the phenomenon that involves the movement of solvent

molecules from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated
solution when these are separated by a semipermiable membrane.

One of the fundamentals characteristics of colloids is the large size

of their particles. When mixed with crystalloids in a semi-
permeable and the said solvent is continually renewed, the
crystalloids will freely diffuse leaving the colloid behind. This
process is called dialysis.

Methodology:
Osmosis
Stopper the tube end of the thistle tube with a
finger. Into the tube 10% solution of sugar in water
Cover the mouth of the tube with a cellophane,
constricted with a rubber
Suspend the tube in a beaker of the water ,label with
the thistle
Make a similar set up using 10% of albumin
Compare the two
Dialysis
Soak a piece of cellophane in the water in a few
minutes.
Fold the soaked cellophane like filter paper fit into
funnel
Pour 30ml of milk on it
Tie the cellophane with the rubber

Suspend the bag using stirring rod across the beaker

Containing distilled water
See to it that the levels of the liquids inside and
outside the cellophane are the same
Allow the milk to dialyses for 1 hr. with constant
stirring
Test the dialysyte for protein and sugar

DIFFUSION
Place 2ml of CuSO4 solution in a test tube.
Incline the test tube and add 3ml of distilled
water carefully. Note the time it takes for the
solution to become evenly distributed.
Repeated the procedure using2ml of Congo
red solution.

QUESTION
Do your results showed that colloidal particles
can be separated from ions in the solutions ?
- Yes, like what happened in the dialysis, for
the protein and sugar test, the dialysate
separated different solution the colloidal
particles in the protein test are the white
precipitate while in the sugar test a color
yellow-red precipitate appeared.

Explain how the colloidal state maybe an aid to

chemical reactions taking place in proplasm ?
- Colloid state is a type of dispersed system, so
that means it has a phase which is liquid in most

INTRODUCTION

One of the ways in which the colloidal nature of

the protoplasm may aid in bringing about the
chemical reactions in the cells is by adsorption.
Through adsorption on the surface, the reacting
molecules are brought into close contact. This
results in increased concentration, which in turn,
increases the speed of the reaction. Each atom on
all kinds of surfaces has free valences or attractive
forces which are capable of attracting only one
molecule from a gas. At equilibrium, the rate of
adsorption is equal to the rate of desorption. When
colloring matter or toxic substances adhere on the
surface of the particles of animal charcoal,
adsorption is taking place. But when fatty acids are
neutralized by sodium hydroxide, the sodium ions
through some chemical force are adsorbed upon the
surface of the dispered droplets of the former.

METHEDOLOGY

Heat approximately 5g. of sugar in a crubicle

until the sugar caramelizes.
Dissolve the caramel in 100 ml of distilled
water. Add 10g. of activated charcoal and shake
vigorously for several minutes.

Filter through a fine paper and compare the

color of filtrate with that of the original caramel
solution.
If the filtrate is not definitely lighter in color,
add more charcoal to the filtrate and filter again.
After the filtrate has drained, pour a few ml of
alcohol or acetone over the moist charcoal,
collecting the filtrate in a clean beaker. Observe
the color of the alcohol as it filters through.

QUESTION

Is the phenomenon of adsorption of commercial

importance? If yes, cite an example.
- Yes, because protein absorption on biomaterials
is one of the example of the biomaterials that
become part of a living thing such as medical
devices.
What is the role of animal charcoal on the
procedure?
- The animal charcoal serve as the absorbent of
the caramel. It is good at trapping other carbon
based impurities
What is the difference between adsorption and
absorption?
- Adsorption is the process in which items ions
on molecules from a substance adhere to a
surface of the absorbent. Absorption is the
