Mudbound

Hillary Jordan’s debut novel, Mudbound, received the 2006 Bellwether Prize for Fiction, a
prize founded by Barbara Kingsolver to reward books of conscience, social responsibility
and literary merit, as well as the 2009 Alex Award from the American Library Association.
Released to instant critical acclaim, Mudbound was the NAIBA (New Atlantic Independent
Booksellers Association) Fiction Book of the Year, a Borders Original Voices selection,
a Book Sense pick and one of 12 “New Voices of 2008” chosen by Waterstones UK. It
was called a “powerful firestorm of a first novel” by Barnes & Noble Discover Pick, and
Publishers Weekly wrote that Mudbound “carries echoes of As I Lay Dying,” hailing the
book as “a superbly rendered depiction of the fury and terror wrought by racism.” Jordan
grew up in Texas and Oklahoma. She received her MFA in creative writing from Columbia
University, and a bachelor’s degree in English and political science from Wellesley College.
Her short fiction has appeared in numerous literary journals, including StoryQuarterly and
The Carolina Quarterly. She lives in Tivoli, NY.

BOOKMARKS Festival of Books
Saturday, September 11 from
10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Downtown Arts District,
Sixth and Trade Streets
BOOKMARKS brings writers and readers
of all ages together as authors, illustrators,
storytellers and chefs share their work and
insights through readings, presentations, panel
discussions, workshops and book-signings.
The festival partners with community
organizations, reading-related exhibitors and
a variety of food vendors. The sixth annual
festival will feature more than 40 authors
along with creative and interactive activities
for children. Andrew Leslie, associate professor
of sociology at Salem, will give a workshop on
the basics of storytelling. Free.

Robert Goolrick –
A Reliable Wife

Robert Goolrick is the author of the New
York Times bestseller A Reliable Wife, a
riveting historical story of love, madness and
obsession. It tells the story of Ralph Truitt,
a wealthy businessman who advertises for a
“reliable” wife; Catherine Land, the deceptive
woman who responds; and Antonio Moretti,
Truitt’s son. The New York Times Book
Review called A Reliable Wife a “suspenseful,
psychologically acute gothic tale,” and the
Wall Street Journal called it “a buzz-worthy
debut novel.” Robert Goolrick grew up in
Virginia, attended Johns Hopkins University
and then lived in Europe for several years.
After many years in the advertising business he
wrote A Reliable Wife. Free.

About Erika Meitner’s work, poet Nikki
Giovanni says, “Erika Meitner is the new voice
of intelligent and emotional poems. Good for
poetry. Good for poetry lovers. Good for the
rest of us, too.” Meitner is the author of the
poetry collections Inventory at the All-Night
Drugstore (Anhinga Press, 2003), and Ideal
Cities, which was a 2009 National Poetry
Series Winner and was published in 2010
by Harper Perennial. She has taught creative
writing at the U. of Va., U. Wis.-Madison,
U. of Calif.-Santa Cruz, and is currently an
assistant professor of English at Virginia Tech,
where she teaches in the MFA program.

Murder by Membership Only by

Murder by Membership Only is a mystery-
comedy featuring nine women. It takes place
in a very exclusive club for women mystery
writers in London, where a highly successful
mystery writer is found dead. One of the
characters says, “How would it look if a
roomful of mystery writers had to go to the
police to solve a murder that took place under
their very noses?” And so they try to solve the
mystery themselves. One of the remaining
eight did it…but whom?
Admission by ticket only: $10 for general

An Evening with
Marshall Chapman
Wednesday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m.
Hanes Auditorium, Salem Fine Arts Center
Marshall Chapman, a graduate of Salem
Academy, has released 10 critically acclaimed
albums and her songs have been recorded by
a variety of artists including Emmylou Harris,
John Hiatt, Jimmy Buffett, Mindy McCready
and Crystal Gayle. She has toured extensively
on her own and opened shows for everybody
from John Prine and Jimmy Buffett to Jerry
Lee Lewis and The Ramones. Her first book,
Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller, was one of
three finalists for the Southern Book Critics
Circle Award. She developed her own one-
woman show called The Triumph of Rock and
Roll over Good Breeding and contributed songs
to Good Ol’ Girls, a country musical based on
the stories of Lee Smith and Jill McCorkle.
Chapman’s new book, They Came to Nashville
is scheduled to be released in October, 2010,
and features interviews with numerous stars
including Kris Kristofferson, Emmy Lou
Harris, Willie Nelson and Miranda Lambert.
She also just wrapped up her first acting role
in the major motion picture Love Don’t Let
Me Down, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim
McGraw. Free.
After the performance there will be a reception
and a book/CD signing.

Christmas Candlelight Service
Thursday, December 2 at 4:15 p.m.

The annual Christmas candlelight service
features the Salem College Chorale and the
Salem College Chamber Choir as well as
student scripture readers telling the Christmas
story. This holiday tradition is for the entire
Salem community and ends with the lighting
of the Moravian candles.

95-year-old pianist Frank Glazer recently
performed the entire cycle of 32 Beethoven
Piano Sonatas. He has performed with most of
the world’s greatest orchestras, and returns to
Salem to celebrate with the mighty Symphonic
Etudes of Robert Schumann and Chopin’s B
Minor Sonata. Free.

Salem College faculty and students will
continue the 200th birthday celebration of
Robert Schumann, an original synthesizer of
the arts. Musicians, including Salem’s newly
Moramus Chorale Concert appointed voice professor, Cristy Lynn Brown,
Saturday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m. will perform beloved works by Schumann as
Hanes Auditorium, Salem Fine Arts Center visual artists and dancers display and perform
their creative responses to the music.
The Moramus Chorale will present a concert
featuring the music of English Moravian Sponsored jointly by the School of Music,
Department of Studio Art and Dance.
composer Christian Ignatius Latrobe, who
was a friend to Haydn. The concert will
feature Latrobe’s Dies Irae, which has not been
performed in full for more than 50 years, as
well as his Dawn of Glory, written as a sequel
to the Dies Irae.

The Beverly Johnson Pritchard Lecture
Barbara Fredrickson, the Kenan Distinguished
Professor and director of the Positive
Emotions and Psychophysiology Laboratory
at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill, has received numerous honors for her
research on positive emotions, including
the American Psychological Association’s
inaugural and highest Templeton Prize
in positive psychology. Her work has also
received more than 10 consecutive years of
research funding from the National Institute
of Mental Health. Fredrickson will discuss
her book, Positivity: Groundbreaking Research
Reveals How to Embrace the Hidden Strength
of Positive Emotions, Overcome Negativity and
Thrive. Free.

Lorretta Ross – SisterSong
Wednesday, October 6th at 7:00 p.m.

Lorretta Ross is one of the founding members
of SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive
Health Collective, a network of local, regional
and national grassroots agencies formed in
1997 to educate women of color and policy
makers on reproductive and sexual health
and rights, and to work towards the access of
health services, information and resources that
are culturally and linguistically appropriate.
In 2004, Ross was national co-director of
the April 25 March for Women’s Lives in
Washington D.C., the largest protest march
in U.S. history with more than one million
participants. She was one of the first African-
American women to direct the first rape crisis
center in the US in the 1970s, and from
1985 to 1989, she served as the director of
women of color programs for the National
Organization for Women, organizing the first
national conference on women of color and
reproductive rights in 1987. Ross has appeared
as a political commentator on Good Morning
America, The Charlie Rose Show, CNN and
BET. Free.

Dr. Laurence Peters is an expert in integrating
technology and global perspectives in school
curriculums. His book Global Education:
Using Technology to Bring the World to your
Students is currently adopted in many
graduate level education programs including
the University of Maryland University
College where he has served as an adjunct
lecturer and consultant. Dr. Peters holds a
Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, a law
degree from the University of Maryland and
has served as counsel to the Subcommittee
on Select Education and Civil Rights for
the U.S. House of Representatives, as senior
policy advisor to the U.S. Department of
Education, directed the Mid-Atlantic Regional
Technology in Education Consortium and
currently serves as vice president of the
National Education Foundation.

Claudia Moore Clark’s installations and
drawings are poetic evocations of arcane
moments that leave indelible marks.
Terri Dowell-Dennis’s most recent works
– installation, drawings and prints – are
inspired by questions and insights about this
ancient book of beginnings. Their works have
a simplicity of means and a direct approach to
materials inherent in the work of both artists
– as well as an affinity for suggesting more
than is initially apparent. Free.

This work photographically documents North
Carolina’s Civil War monuments as well as
relating the historical and artistic context in
which these memorials were created. This
well-researched exhibition is historically and
artistically relevant as well as timely as we
approach the 150th anniversary of the Civil
War next year. Free.

Mitch Stover’s work involves varying subjects
– simple views and details of beauty he sees
