LOCOMOTIVE TYPE: SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: Temperature controlled

PPE REQUIRED: Hardhat, Safety glasses, Steel toe Shoes soldering gun, Multimeter, SMD Resistor to EMD part
and Hot Work PPE. no 40055817,
Before following the procedure below, make sure the locomotive is properly locked out and flagged per your local
procedures. Ensure the proper job briefing, safety procedures and PPE required for the task were discussed. notify the
other people working on the unit that you are present and what area your working.
SAFETY ITEMS TO WATCH FOR:
HAVE WORK AREA WASHED IF NEED
INSPECT TOOLS FOR DEFECTS AND WEAR
BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS
GOOD HOUSE KEEPING
ON ALL TASKS BELOW BE AWARE OF BODY POSITIONING
ON ALL TASKS BELOW BE AWARE OF OVEREXERTION
TAKE BREAKS AND STRETCH WHEN WORKING IN AWKWARD BODY
POSITIONING, SAME POSITION, OR CONFINED SPACES FOR LONG
PERIODS OF TIME
SEQUENCE OF JOB STEPS [RECOMMENDED SAFE ACTION]
1. Job Briefing. Replacement of SMD Resistor R3 from DVR circuit board (DVR 301 to EMD Pt.
No 40106746)
2. Crank loco, make sure you apply all brakes including hand brakes as per local procedures. Center
reverser. [Prevent coupling into by another Locomotive, proper body position and proper hand
protection.]
3. Using multimeter check for DVR 301 output DC Voltage (Check at test points on DVR BCP with
respect to common) Note: Keep multimeter range in DC volts
4. If the voltage is less or maintaining only 66 to 68 volt DC, then observe for PRG LEDS, the BOOST
MODE LED will be glowing.
5. Using multimeter check for DVR 301 output AC Voltage (Check at test points on DVR phase C,B & A
) Note: Keep multimeter range in AC vots
6. If the AC voltage phase to phase is only between 50Vac to 52Vac, note down the readings . Note :
Auxillary AC voltage should maintain always 55VAC
7. If the voltage is maintaining at 70 to 72 volts DC, then no BOOST MODE LED will be glowing on
PRG 301
8. If DVR voltage is between 66 to 68 volts DC, then it leads/activates PRG Module to work
continuously in Boost mode and battery specific gravity drops out to 1.220 against 1.250 for lead acid
batteries
9. Shut down loco and remove DVR from the loco and take it to ESD test bench.
10. Remove the cover of DVR 301 and observe/look into surface mounting resistor R3 with
magnifying glass on circuit board (Refer circuit diagram below)

11. With help of temperature soldering gun lift one end of resistor from the circuit board and measure the
resistance value (R3 SMD resistor to EMD Part number 40055817)
12. You should measure 140 kilo ohm across the R3 resistor
13. If you found resistor value has dropped to 135 to 137 kilo ohm, replace with the new SMD resistor
with value 140 kilo ohm
14. Mount the DVR 301 on loco and recheck all the above mentioned voltage readings
15. For normal functioning of PRG the DVR voltage readings should be 70V to 72Vdc and 55Vac
