The primary product offered by Uratex is the foam. The foam is

designed in accordance with the necessity of its customers. The types of
foam which the Uratex produced are classified as follows:
a. Spring Mattress

Pocket Spring Mattress

A pocket spring mattress is composed of individually wrapped

pocket coil springs that delicately isolates motion in an area for an
uninterrupted sleep. It provides a firm comfort feel that dynamically
shapes to the contours of the body, for exceptional pressure relief
and back support.

Double Layer Innerspring Mattress

It consists of two layers of individually pocketed coil springs that

immediately help spring back the comfort layers, for a medium soft
feel. It is specially designed to isolate motion in an area for an
uninterrupted sleep.

Bonnel Spring Mattress

One of the traditional types of mattresses, it typically uses hour glass

shaped springs knotted end rings at each side with a round helical
wire that connects the spring together.
4

b. Foam Mattress
Foam Mattress

Foam mattresses may consist of one of more types of foam. It may

have different densities and attributes, with corresponding comfort
feel.

c. Specialty Foam Mattress

Latex Foam Mattress

Latex foam is considered as one of the most luxurious foam for

mattresses. Made from the juice of the tropical rubber tree (Hevea
Brasiliensis), it is naturally elastic. Its high resiliency adapts to the
movement of the body and corrects spine alignment. Built for
outstanding body support, it promotes good blood circulation and
provides pressure relief. It features an open cell structure that
promotes air circulation and moisture regulation. More importantly,
its formulation enables it to be durable, hypoallergenic.

Memory Foam Mattress

Engineered for superior comfort, a memory foam mattress is

composed of visco-elastic foam with low resiliency that intelligently
conforms to the shape of the body. Engineered for superior
comfort, it distributes weight evenly and alleviates pressure points.

In addition, sizes of the foam vary as follows:

Single (36 x 75)

Double (48 x 75)
5

Full (54 x 75)

Queen (60 x 75)
Standard King (72 x 78)

Moreover, the companys sleep specialist is offering services for

customization of mattress. If the customer prefers a specific mattress size,
the company can have it customized.

Quality Management
The plant so-called QA Lab is responsible in testing and checking
the density of the produced foam. Through the equipment which tests
and checks the density of the foam, the foamer can perceive that when
the foams density is high the quality of the foam is high and when the
foams density is low, the foam is also of low quality.
Process Strategy
The production of this product involves only a meticulous manner of
mixing all the ingredients until there may be minimal bubbles in it. This means
that the company has different kinds of mixers and specialized cutters as well for
each intended product or usage. The company uses the intermittent production
process, specifically the batch production. The plant located in Mandaue City,
Cebuhas the capacity of ten 18-meter long each day, considering the limited
space of its warehouse. In totality, the plant operates at a capacity of producing
an average of 800 foam and mattresses a day.
Location Strategy
The location of the Uratex plant in Cebu is excellent since it is
located in Mandaue City which is known as Cebus industrial capital. The
plant in Cebu is part of the 21 plants located strategically countrywide
and is still continue to hone its potential for expansion, reaching the other
part of the Philippines especially the Mindanao area.
6

Facility layout
The plant operation facility can be categorized as continuous
processing system since the production has the capacity of producing
high volumes of a few standardized products. Also, the plant has a layout
called process oriented or functional layout because its facilities and
equipmentare arranged according to its utilization as the materials or
work in process products passes through in them.
Human resource and job design
The workers are employed as contractual, regular or outsourced
employees. However, the plant workers comprise most of the contractual
employees whereas the few regular employees are assigned in the
research and development laboratory and administrative offices. The
manner of hiring is not that strict provided that each employee who will
be hired will be equipped of the necessary skills and knowledge in the
workplace.
Supply Chain Management
The Uratex plant in Cebu has different suppliers. The materials as
being mentioned by the plant speaker were coming from abroad since
the companys purpose is to provide quality product thus quality of
materials to be used are also assured through purchasing directly from the
companys trusted suppliers.
Inventory Management
There is a separate warehouse wherein the finished products are
being stored. In the said warehouse, FIFO method is being applied, which
means that the first finished products having been stored in the
warehouse should be the first to be distributed to its customers. The
number of finished products to be stored in the warehouse is being
determined through the companys forecast hence to avoid over- and
7

under-stocking. Furthermore, the lead time being considered as the time

interval between ordering and receiving order is 1 month.
Scheduling
URATEX CEBU operates 24 hours having 2 shiftings per day. There is
no assured daily operation schedule since the production is in
accordance with the time and volume of orders from the customers. Even
so, there is still faster delivery and the customers order is being satisfied
since the plant maintained inventory in its warehouse.

Maintenance and Reliability

The plant undergoes both preventive and breakdown

maintenance. This is to insure that there will be no more complications in every
plant operation. Accordingly, the breakdown maintenance is being conducted
every week.

product. Gardenia breads are also enriched with foliate that is good for
pregnant women.

repetitive manufacturing systems. There are mass production facilities that
produce high volumes of the same products. The manufacturing of bread
happens in an automated and special purpose equipments.

Facility Layout

Gardenias facility is a product-oriented facility layout. It is used for systems

with high production volumes and a low variety of products. The facility is
organized according to the sequence and machinery and materials are placed
following the path of successive manufacturing operations of the product.

located its second plant in Lapu-Lapu City to serve the needs of Cebu, Bohol
and as well as the Northern part of Mindanao. The location is almost near to the
market, so the transportation cost is lower and the possibility of depletion or
perishability of bread before it reaches the retail outlets to customers is lesser.

before it places an order(reordering point) from other countries for ingredients
such as raisins, chocolates and as well as flour from the Philippines. The plant has
the capacity of producing 2,000 loaves per hour with a total of almost 50,000
loaves a day and straight from the production floor, the breads in the trays are
processed for loading onto trucks for delivery to retail outlets. To ensure that
freshness is sealed in every gardenia bag, color-coded G-locks imprinted with
the price, batch number for traceability, and expiry date complete the whole
21

package. Those breads in the retail outlets are displayed for only two days, and
then it will be pulled out by the supplier which is the Gardenia Bakeries
Philippines, Inc. to process it into fish meat.

Supply Chain Management

The suppliers of Gardenia for raw materials are imported from other

and then directly from the production floor, the breads in the trays are loaded
onto trucks for delivery to retail outlets in Visayas and Mindanao down to
consumers.

Gardenias operation is every Monday to Saturday while Sunday is the

allotted time for cleaning. If there are no machine/facility troubles, the
operation is continuous. Their operation is 24 hours, workers has 3 shifts a day 8

Learning and Insights

It is not enough to understand the theories of operations management just
in a four-corner room. There are topics that need to be seen in actual for us to
get the theories being taught. The chance to have a tour in Cebu gave us the
opportunity to experience the operations of different manufacturing
companies. In the actual operation we are amazed by the innovation of
technology today. We are surprise with equipment and machines that they
used in their production.

As business students, exposure to the real business world gave us the idea
of what we would encounter in the future. It is a stepping stone for us who will
be engaging in those kinds of workplace.

Our educational tour in Cebu was fun. We had experienced so many

things we didnt expect. The hotel where we stayed in for 3 nights is very
accommodating, we experienced good quality service. We dine in a luscious
restaurant. We had a tour guide who effectively gave us more information to
know more about the historic City of Cebu. The learning and experiences we
had is worth the money that we paid for. Indeed, the tour was not a waste; its
full of fun and full of information that we could surely use in the near future.
