Content Standard Addressed: SB3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to analyze how
biological traits are passed on to successive generations.
b. Use mathematical models to predict and explain patterns of inheritance.
(Clarification statement: Students should be able to use Punnett squares (monohybrid and
dihybrid crosses) and/or rules of probability, to analyze the following inheritance patterns:
dominance, codominance, incomplete dominance.)

Lesson idea implementation:
The will utilize netTrekker to access a program called What color eyes will your children have. Students will
be paired with a partner and will input information regarding their eye color to determine what color eyes
their children would have. Additionally, students will use the program input different eye colors to see what
possible results could be produced. The project will be introduced by showing a video on BrainPop. I believe
that this assignment alone would be expected to take 30 minutes. To assess what has been learned in the
class period student will take a quiz, on the BrainPop website, before the video and after the assignment.
Following the assignment a class discussion will be held to apply the standard and information to what they
have learned by using the program. To push this lesson to a higher learning level I would have another
assignment where students make their own hypothesis regarding heredity and then test those hypothesis.
This could be done by using an online fly breeding program. I will conclude the lesson by having the students
retake the quiz from the beginning of class and this will provide the students with instant feedback on their
days work.
