COURSE SYLLABUS (updated May 2006 AWCO)

Course Code: STRUCT1 Credit Units: Four (4)

Prerequisite: STRENTH (Strength of Materials)
Course Title: Structural Analysis I & Special Topics in Strength of Materials
Course Description: Stress and Structural Analysis of Beams - Unsymmetrical Bending, Non-
homogenous Axial & Flexural Members, Curved Beams, Shear Center, Impact
Loading, Inelastic Bending, Buckling of Columns, Deflections of Statically
Determinate & Indeterminate Beams, Double Integration Method, Area-
Moment Method, Conjugate Beam Method, Influence Lines of Beams &
Trusses, Moving Loads, Special Topics

General Objectives:
1. To understand how geometric and physical properties of a structure cause internal and
external effects in it when subjected to loads.
2. To prepare the students in their courses in structural design.
Value Aims:
1. To develop an awareness in the students concerning their moral and social responsibility in
carrying-out proper and accurate analysis of structures to assure their safe & reliable design.
2. To develop honesty, patience and perseverance in students through the course requirements
in the form of problem sets, exercises, exams and recitation.

Textbook: Hibbeler, Mechanics of Materials, 4nd Ed. - H

4. Notes
Policies:
1. Grading System: The general average is based on 5% Diagnostic Exam, 65% Average of
Quizzes & 30% Final Exam.
2. The following scale will be used to compute the final grade:
4.0 : 94.0 - 100.0 3.5 : 88.0 - 93.9 3.0: 82.0 - 87.9
2.5 : 76.0 - 81.9 2.0 : 70.0 - 75.9 1.5 : 65.0 - 69.9
1.0 : 60.0 - 64.9 0.0 : 59.9 below
3. Reading materials are indicated in the course syllabus. You are strongly encouraged to read
the material before you come to class.
4. Exercise Problems: Students are advised to solve the exercise problems assigned from the
textbook and problems given as seatwork in class to deepen their understanding of the
concepts and to familiarize themselves with the equations. As an incentive, one problem
from the exercise problems will be given in the quizzes.
5. The maximum no. hours of absences allowed is ten (equivalent to five -2 hr meetings)
6. No make-up will be given for any missed quiz. A missed quiz is given a grade of 0.
7. Exemption from Final Examination: A student whose average of the four quizzes is 96%
and no quiz with a grade lower than 90% and a diagnostic exam grade not lower than 70%
need not take the final exam and his/her final grade will be 4.0.
