Remember Hudson When ...

Nathaniel Hills, Jr. a young man of 23 years, settled on this farm
about 1739 when his father transferred some 50 acres of land to
him. These acres were part of the 900 acres of unsettled land that
Nathaniel Hills, Sr. had purchased from Jonathan Tyng. References
vary as to the size of Nathaniel, Jr.s family. Kimball Webster in his
History of Hudson indicates that Susan (Baldwin) and Nathaniel
Hills, Jr. raised a family of seven girls and five boys. When
Nathaniel, Jr. passed, ownership was transferred to his third son,
Samuel (born 1769). Likewise, with the passing of Samuel in 1843,
ownership went to Abijah (born 1806) and later to his son Franklin
Augustus (born 1846). It is interesting to note that Abijah Hills in
1846, by an act of legislature, had the family name changed to
Hill. Franklin Augustus was a dairy farmer. He and his wife, Luelle,
had one child, a daughter, Helen, who passed at age 14. In 1926,

This farm had been home to four generations Hill(s), passing from
father to son beginning with Nathaniel, Jr. The original dwelling

1830 farmhouse was taken by the Jasper family c. 1945.
This farm became Annex No. 1 of Jasper Poultry Farms.

space. The dairy barn was remodeled into a three-deck
poultry barn only to be burned in 1933. A new poultry
barn was added as well as other improvements including a
breeding/brooding house. From 1935 to 1939 operations at
Annex No. 1 increased rapidly. The c. 1830 farmhouse was
used as living quarters for the employees of Jasper Farms.
Disaster struck the farmhouse during the early morning
of Jan. 17, 1947, when a fire started from the flooding and
explosion of an oil burner near the kitchen. The flames from
this explosion destroyed the entire house. The family in
residence lost all their belongings; but,

This farm was located on or
near the end of Nathaniel Hills 900
acres (which proved to be closer to
1,600 when finally surveyed). Until 1733 it was within
the boundaries of Dunstable, Mass.; then it was part

presented Dennis Perreault of
Campbell High School with
the NH Teacher Recycler of the
Year Award at the eighth Annual
School Recycling Conference
on May 23 at the Radisson
Hotel in Manchester.
Perreault is the driving
force behind the Campbell
Recycling Advocacy Project
(C.R.A.P.). This innovative
program offers students course
credit while learning new skills
as they work to extract and
bale recyclable commodities
such as cans, paper and even
the copper from electrical
wiring. The program has gained
statewide recognition through
participation in multiple
regional and national recycling
competitions as well as
receiving grants to help sustain
their program.
This is a great example of
how one teacher can build a
program that not only saves
money and the environment,
but teaches valuable skills
that students can use as they
transition into their careers,
said Michael Durfor, NRRA
executive director. Our hope
is that Mr. Perreaults students
will enter the growing recycling
and resource management
field.

Rodgers Memorial Library

Become a Friend of the Rodgers Memorial Library by
joining a group of volunteers who support a variety of
activities including the purchase of the 3-D Printer, the
Telescope, learning modules, and other equipment for
the Childrens Room; awarding the Leonard A. Smith
Memorial Scholarship; providing funding for the Summer
Reading Program, movie licenses, Santa photos, author
forums, and a variety of Humanities Council programs.
Choose from activities including being a Santas Helper
or Second Hand Prose librarian, celebrating National
Library Week with Library staff, or participating in a
variety of other opportunities.
The Friends have supported the Hudson library
system for over thirty-five years and were instrumental in
1focusing on the need to build a new home for expanded
services which culminated in the construction and
opening of the new Library donated by the Rodgers family
in 2009.
The Friends are a 501c(3) organization which holds
business meetings five times a year to plan activities and
form necessary sub-committees. Tax-deductible annual
membership categories include Individual, Family, Patron,
and Business.

The Litchfield Budget Committee has a vacancy due
to the resignation of Cory Izbicki who has accepted the
position of Business Administrator for the Litchfield
School District. We are asking any interested residents
of Litchfield to submit a letter of interest outlining why
you want to serve on the committee and what skills you
bring to the table. Please submit your letter of interest to
me at ccouture@litchfieldnh.gov by Wednesday, June 21.
We will be reviewing those who have submitted a letter of
scheduled meeting on June 22.
As always we invite members of the community
to attend any of our meetings where we do have an
opportunity for community input. We typically meet

recommend to President Donald Trump to get Congress to
pass a law Stating that English is the National Language
and companies cant stop American speaking people from

Thousands with Annual
Terry Fox Walk-A-Thon and
St. Jude Fundraisers
(Donations accepted at
Litchfield Middle School)
For more than 25 years Litchfield Middle School has
participated in an annual Terry Fox Walk-a-thon that was
started by the sixth grade during their study of Canada.
Each year we raise money in the name of former students
Kelly Sullivan, Ryan Donaghey, Allison Corf and Dean
Andrews who all lost their own battles with cancer. We
also remember Barbara Rowe, a former LMS nurse, Bruce
Hall and Anne Galimi, former paraprofessionals and gym
teacher Jim Bliss. Harry Rowell was a janitor at LMS who
also passed from cancer.
This year we add a name to the growing list as our
LMS family has recently lost another treasured teacher
who spent her career of over 30 years in Litchfield
as a dedicated sixth grade math teacher, Mrs. Cheryl
Irving. Mrs. Irving herself dedicated more than 20 years
coordinating the Math-a-Thon raising thousands of
dollars each year for the St. Jude Childrens Hospital for
childhood cancers.
As we walk this year, we will all have family and friends
who have been touched by cancer in our hearts while
we trek to and from Darrah Pond on Wednesday, June
21, simulating the 26 miles a day Terry Fox ran to bring
awareness to this dreadful disease.
We would like to send a huge thank you to the
community of Litchfield that so generously donates money
each year to these worthy causes. Also, we would like to
thank the middle school PTO who provides a lunch at
Darrah Pond each year for close to 500 students and staff.

This is shaping up to be the year we will talk about for years to come! The inshore striper fishing was busy with 26-33 inch fish all week
and the tinker size mackerel (5-10 inches) are in so thick at times, just offshore, you could practically walk across them. Mackerel are striper

of music to the
town of Hudson
this week. They
stopped at the Early
Learning Center
for a concert in the
gymnasium and
then dropped by
the Senior Center. Swing Choir performs at the Senior Center.
All the students
that perform in these special groups go through an audition process back at the start of school and practice
after school all throughout the school year. During the Spring Concert Series at the middle school they
are featured both nights. The Woodwind Choir brought their famous chamber music to share. The
Swing Choir was excellent as always, blending their voices to the piano and also performing one piece
a cappella. The Jazz Band had everyones feet tapping and hands clapping along to the music as they
performed. The bands and chorus are under the direction of Rob Scagnelli, Mike Seckla and Sara Heron.
Thank you to all the students for sharing their talents with the community who was otherwise unable to
attend your concerts.

Scholarship Corp.
Alvirne High Schools Michael E. Earl,
who received a University of Oklahoma
Scholarship; and Jacob R. Wesson,
who received a University of Kentucky
Scholarship, are among the countrys more
than 3,200 winners of National Merit
Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and
universities.
Officials of each sponsor college
selected their scholarship winners
from among the finalists in the 2017
National Merit Scholarship Program who
plan to attend their institution. These
awards provide between $500 and
$2,000 annually for up to four years of
undergraduate study at the institution
financing the scholarship. An additional
group of scholars will be announced in
July, bringing the total number of college-
sponsored merit scholarship recipients in
the 2017 competition to approximately
4,000.
This year, 182 higher education
institutions are underwriting merit
scholarship awards through the National
Merit Scholarship Program. Sponsor
colleges and universities include 103
private and 79 public institutions
located in 44 states and the District of
Columbia. College-sponsored merit
scholarship winners announced today
are a part of the distinguished group of
about 7,500 high school seniors who
will receive National Merit Scholarships
for college undergraduate study worth
over $32 million. Earlier this spring,
NMSC announced winners of corporate-
sponsored merit scholarship awards and
National Merit $2,500 scholarships.
More than 1.6 million juniors in more
than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017
National Merit Scholarship competition
when they took the 2015 Preliminary SAT/
National Merit Scholarship Qualifying
Test that served as an initial screen of
program entrants. Last fall, approximately
16,000 semifinalists were named on a
state-representational basis in numbers
proportional to each states percentage of
the national total of graduating high school
seniors. Semifinalists were the highest-
scoring program entrants in each state and
represented less than one percent of the
nations seniors.

Recognizing Juniors and Seniors at Alvirne Academic Awards Night

Alvirne juniors and seniors were recognized Thursday
night, May 25, at the schools annual Academic Awards Night
in the Steckevicz gymnasium. Celine Tse spoke as the class
essayist, the third-ranked student in the senior class behind the
valedictorian and the salutatorian. This was Alvirnes biggest
cohort so far with 92 students challenging themselves through
this rigorous course of studies over their high school career.
A reception sponsored by the AHS Student Council was held
immediately following the ceremony.

Former Alvirne JROTC Cadet Achieves a First

Brandon Dumais Flying High as he Graduates from the Academy
When Brandon Dumais began
his freshman year at Alvirne High
School in September 2009, he had not
enrolled in the Air Force Junior ROTC
Program. A friend in the Junior ROTC
program encouraged Brandon to sign
up after the first two weeks of school.
Brandon entered the Junior ROTC
Program and fast forward eight years
to May 24, 2017, Brandon became
the first graduate from Alvirnes Junior
ROTC Program to graduate from a
U.S. Military Service Academy.
Brandon was very active in both
Junior ROTC and other activities at
Alvirne. He played sports and he
was in the National Honor Society.
He performed hundreds of hours of
community service. The summer
before his junior year, Brandon would
literally see his dreams take flight. He
was selected by the Daedalians, a
society of military aviators, to receive
ground and flight instruction. Only
a few months after getting his drivers
license, Brandon soloed in a Cessna
172. As his parents, Randy and
Bonnie, recall, Little did we know
that this was just the beginning of
Brandons presence in the pilots seat.
By the time he was a senior,
Brandon was the group commander
of Alvirne Junior ROTC. Along with a
small team of other seniors, Brandon
planned the move of the Junior ROTC
Program physical space from a room
off the back of an art classroom to
its current home in the Career and
Technical Education Center. This
involved moving uniforms, books
and computer equipment, along
with painting and remodeling, all
during the summer when everyone
else was on vacation. The space that
previously was a seldom used small
engines workshop was transformed
into a storage closet and drill space.
The vision by Brandon and his team of
what the new space should look like
left a lasting legacy for future classes.
During his senior year, Brandon
received both a college ROTC
scholarship offer from the Air
Force and an appointment to the
United States Air Force Academy.
Brandon accepted the academy
appointment, and excelled during
his four years there. He graduated
as a distinguished graduate of the
Randy and Bonnie credit Brandons
success to the opportunities the
Alvirne Air Force Junior ROTC
Program provided him. The residents
of Hudson are fortunate to have a
learning institution that affords their
young adults so many opportunities
for their future and has such an impact
on our young adults, they said.
Brandons graduation from the
academy was a special event not only
for his family but also represented a
reunion of sorts for the Junior ROTC
program that helped start him on his
path to success. Former Alvirne Junior
ROTC Instructor Colonel Kevin Grady
attended the graduation activities,
and was the commissioning officer for
Brandon as he took his oath of office
as a second lieutenant. TSgt. Kevin
Dubeau, son of the late Alvirne Junior
ROTC Instructor SMSgt Mike Dubeau,
attended to receive Brandons first
salute as an officer.
Although Brandon is the first of
Alvirnes Junior ROTC cadets to
graduate from a service academy,
he will not be the last. Waiting in
the wings are Frank Cuniff, son of
Tim and Stacy Cuniff, who is a junior
at the U.S. Naval Academy and Tia
Gaumont, daughter of Jeff and Kim
Gaumont, a Merrimack High School
graduate who was an Alvirne High
School Junior ROTC cadet and is
a sophomore at the U.S. Air Force
Academy. The Dumais family, along with Brandons girlfriend, Kayla Hannon, celebrates after his commissioning.

Among the graduating students in the Class of 2017 is a
local hero, Lawrence Torre. Torre , who has served 12 years
in the military while working full time for the Army National
Guard has been attending Granite State College to get his
teaching degree.
Staff Sergeant Lawrence Torre is a veteran, serving three
tours overseas, 2004-2005 in Iraq, 2007-2008 in Iraq and most
recently 2009-2010 in Afghanistan.
He is a husband and proud father of three. While also with HLN
committing to his school and full-time job, Lawrence finds
the time to coach multiple sporting teams in the town, most
notably the Hudson-Litchfield Bears where he has been
a coach for the last three years. Even with these types of
commitments he even finds time to participate in an adult
soccer team as well.
Lawrence just graduated with high honors with his
associates degree and has now set his eyes on a bachelors
degree to further his education at Granite State College.
