Sentences: Simple, Compound, and Complex

Experienced writers use a variety of sentences to make their writing interesting and
lively. Too many simple sentences, for example, will sound choppy and immature
while too many long sentences will be difficult to read and hard to understand.
This page contains definitions of simple, compound, and complex sentences with
many simple examples. The purpose of these examples is to help the ESL/EFL
learner to identify sentence basics including identification of sentences in the short
quizzes that follow. After that, it will be possible to analyze more complex
sentences varieties.

SIMPLE SENTENCE
A simple sentence, also called an independent clause, contains a subject and a verb,
and it expresses a complete thought. In the following simple sentences, subjects are
in yellow, and verbs are in green.

A. Some students like to study in the mornings.

B. Juan and Arturo play football every afternoon.
C. Alicia goes to the library and studies every day.

The three examples above are all simple sentences. Note that sentence B contains a
compound subject, and sentence C contains a compound verb. Simple sentences,
therefore, contain a subject and verb and express a complete thought, but they can
also contain a compound subjects or verbs.

COMPOUND SENTENCE
A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator. The
coordinators are as follows: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. (Helpful hint: The first
letter of each of the coordinators spells FANBOYS.) Except for very short sentences,
coordinators are always preceded by a comma. In the following compound sentences,
subjects are in yellow, verbs are in green, and the coordinators and the commas that
precede them are in red.

A. I tried to speak Spanish, and my friend tried to speak English.

B. Alejandro played football, so Maria went shopping.
C. Alejandro played football, for Maria went shopping.

8
SEKOLAH MENENGAH KEBANGSAAN AGAMA KUALA SELANGOR
PROGRAM PERMATA GEMILANG SPM 2016
BAHASA INGGERIS

The above three sentences are compound sentences. Each sentence contains two
independent clauses, and they are joined by a coordinator with a comma preceding
it. Note how the conscious use of coordinators can change the relationship between
the clauses. Sentences B and C, for example, are identical except for the
coordinators. In sentence B, which action occurred first? Obviously, "Alejandro
played football" first, and as a consequence, "Maria went shopping. In sentence C,
"Maria went shopping" first. In sentence C, "Alejandro played football" because,
possibly, he didn't have anything else to do, for or because "Maria went shopping."
How can the use of other coordinators change the relationship between the two
clauses? What implications would the use of "yet" or "but" have on the meaning of
the sentence?

COMPLEX SENTENCE
A complex sentence has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent
clauses. A complex sentence always has a subordinator such as because, since, after,
although, or when or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which. In the following
complex sentences, subjects are in yellow, verbs are in green, and the subordinators
and their commas (when required) are in red.

A. When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give the teacher the last
page.
B. The teacher returned the homework after she noticed the error.
C. The students are studying because they have a test tomorrow.
D. After they finished studying, Juan and Maria went to the movies.
E. Juan and Maria went to the movies after they finished studying.

When a complex sentence begins with a subordinator such as sentences A and D, a

comma is required at the end of the dependent clause. When the independent clause
begins the sentence with subordinators in the middle as in sentences B, C, and E, no
comma is required. If a comma is placed before the subordinators in sentences B, C,
and E, it is wrong.
Note that sentences D and E are the same except sentence D begins with the
dependent clause which is followed by a comma, and sentence E begins with the
independent clause which contains no comma. The comma after the dependent
clause in sentence D is required, and experienced listeners of English will often hear
a slight pause there. In sentence E, however, there will be no pause when the
independent clause begins the sentence.

COMPLEX SENTENCES / ADJECTIVE CLAUSES

Finally, sentences containing adjective clauses (or dependent clauses) are also
complex because they contain an independent clause and a dependent clause. The
subjects, verbs, and subordinators are marked the same as in the previous sentences,

9
SEKOLAH MENENGAH KEBANGSAAN AGAMA KUALA SELANGOR
PROGRAM PERMATA GEMILANG SPM 2016
BAHASA INGGERIS

and in these sentences, the independent clauses are also underlined.

A. The woman who(m) my mom talked to sells cosmetics.

B. The book that Jonathan read is on the shelf.
C. The house which AbrahAM Lincoln was born in is still standing.
D. The town where I grew up is in the United States.
Adjective Clauses are studied in this site separately, but for now it is important to
know that sentences containing adjective clauses are complex.

CONCLUSION
Are sure you now know the differences between simple, compound, and complex
sentences? Click QUICK QUIZ to find out. This quiz is just six sentences. The key is
to look for the subjects and verbs first.
Another quiz, this one about Helen Keller contains ten sentences.
These quiz sentences based on the short story, The Americanization of Shadrach
Cohen, by Bruno Lessing.

After each quiz, click GRADE QUIZ to see your score immediately.
Remember that with the skill to write good simple, compound, and complex
sentences, you will have the flexibility to (1) convey your ideas precisely and (2)
entertain with sentence variety at the same time! Good luck with these exercises!

Sentence connectors

Sentence connectors are used to link ideas from one sentence to the next and to give paragraphs
coherence. Sentence connectors perform different functions and are placed at the beginning of a
sentence. They are used to introduce, order, contrast, sequence ideas, theory, data etc. The
following table lists useful connectors.

Vocabulary is adequate but lacks precision.

Punctuation is generally correct but does not enhance or clarify meaning.
Simple words are spelt correctly but errors may occur when unfamiliar words are
used.
Written in paragraphs but show lack of planning or unity.
The style may not be appropriate to task.
Meaning is never in doubt, but single word errors are sufficiently frequent and
serious to hamper precision and speed of reading.
Some simple structures will be accurate but accuracy is not sustained.
Vocabulary is limited and either too simple to convey precise meaning or are
E imperfectly understood.
7-9 Simple words will usually be spelt correctly but mistakes will occur when more
difficult words are used.
Paragraphs lack unity. Links are incorrectly used. There may be errors of sentence
separation and punctuation.
The tone may not be appropriate.
Meaning is fairly clear but the incidence of error is high and definitely impedes the
reading.
There will be many serious errors of various kinds throughout the script but they are
mainly of the single word type, i.e. they could be could be corrected without rewriting
the whole sentence.
U (i) A few simple structures are used accurately.
Vocabulary- only simple range of words that are inadequate to express intended
4-6
shades of meaning.
There may be frequent spelling errors.
Punctuation will sometimes be used correctly but sentence separation errors may
occur.
Paragraphs may not be used, or if used, show a lack of planning.
The tone and style is inappropriate.
Sense will be decipherable, but some of the errors will be multiple in nature, requiring
the reader to re-read and re-organise before meaning becomes clear.
U (ii)
Whole sections may make little or no sense. There are unlikely to be more than one
2-3
or two accurate sentences. The content is comprehensible, but its tone is hidden by
the density of errors.
Scripts in this category are almost entirely impossible to recognise as pieces of
English.
U (iii) Whole sections may make no sense at all or are copied from the task.
0-1 Award 1 mark if some sense can be obtained.
The mark 0 should only be awarded if the writing makes no sense at all from
beginning to end.

Dear Madam,

DECISION ON END-OF-YEAR TRIP

With reference to the above matter, I would like to bring your attention to the trip we have planned after the end-
of-year examination. In relation to this, on behalf of the students of Class 5 Bukhari, I am writing this letter to
inform you that after having a thorough discussion, we have decided to choose the trip to the seaside.

2. For your information, the trip to the seaside was decided because all of us considered that the date
proposed that is from 2 to 4 December is convenient as it is the beginning of the month and many of us will be able
to make it for the trip. Many of us will be going out for holidays with our family members around the end of the
month. Not only that, the cost for the trip, which is about RM80 per person, is cheaper and thus, affordable for
every student. Besides, the students feel that the idea of staying in camps is awesome, which will enable us to
enjoy ourselves during our stay at the seaside for 3 days and 2 nights.

3. Other than that, we think that the activities provided will be very enjoyable and offer a lot of benefits.
Besides being a fun activity, swimming will also keep our body healthy and fit. Moreover, we will have a lifetime
opportunity to enjoy the great view of the nearby islands through the boat rides served for the campers.

4. Apart from the above-mentioned, activities like games on the beach and jungle trekking will help to create
stronger ties among students. Through these activities, our true friendship as well as physical and mental strength
will be tested. Finally, campfires are the most awaited activity as many of us will have the chance to show their
hidden talents such as singing and story-telling.

It is our utmost hope that you will give the above-mentioned choice of trip its due attention and consideration. It is
also hoped that necessary arrangements for the trip could be taken as soon as you come back to school. We look
forward to hearing positive response from you. Your cooperation is highly appreciated.

Thank you.

writing this article to share some tips on how to cope with stress with all of you. I sincerely hope
you will find this article useful.

Firstly, we must make time for regular exercise. Sitting and studying for hours can add
more stress so, going for walks or jogging will do us good. Secondly, having hobbies such as
stamp collecting or playing music will help to relax our tensed mind. However, for all these
activities, we need to have a timetable to manage our time well. Speaking of time management,
working in groups is a smart way to study as it not only helps us to study better but also saves
our time. After all, less is more.

Next, eating a balanced meal is essential to cope with stress. We need the nutrition and
energy to study. We must also have enough sleep. If we cut on our sleeping hours, studying too
late into the night and waking up early the next morning, we will be too tired to concentrate in
class. Other than that, we must practice good study skills. Making notes and mind-mapping are
good studying techniques. Make a checklist that helps to monitor how far we are with our
revision.

Apart from the above tips, we need to seek advice from our teachers or counselor if we
feel distressed. Outdoor games such as playing badminton or tennis can help us to get away
from books for a while and thus release our tension. Talking to our family members is also a
good idea to share our burden. Finally, listening to music is also good as it will make us feel light
and easy.

In a nutshell, knowing how to cope with stress is significantly important in the life of a
student. Therefore, we need to always watch our daily routines. My hope is that you have
gained some valuable input from this article. Remember, all work and no play makes Jack a dull
boy. Au revoir!

SAMPLE ANSWER OF A REPORT

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING FACILITIES IN SMKA SHEIKH ABDUL MALEK

To : The Principal,
SMKA Sheikh Abdul Malek,
Jalan Budiman,
Kuala Terengganu.

The issue of the unpleasant condition of our school has been a growing concern among parents
and students and there have been numerous complaints about the matter. In relation to this, the
schools Prefects Board has had a meeting to discuss about a few matters in our school which could be
improved. Therefore, here we feel greatly responsible to bring to you / to present the detailed report of
the meeting for your kind attention. Hopefully, you will find this report useful for your further action and
consideration.

The first issue that was discussed was the unsatisfactory service and high food prices in the
school canteen. The canteen seems to be short of workers because there are only two people handling
the huge crowd of students during recess. Due to this, some students are not able to buy food on time.

49
SEKOLAH MENENGAH KEBANGSAAN AGAMA KUALA SELANGOR
PROGRAM PERMATA GEMILANG SPM 2016
BAHASA INGGERIS

In addition, the prices of food seem rather high for our students. For example, a plate of fried rice is
RM3.00. This means, they are only able to buy light food like bread or buns because they need to buy
drinks as well.

Other than that, there is also an urgent need to improve the cleanliness of the school. For
instance, the condition of the school toilets is deplorable especially after recess. Therefore, the school
workers should make sure that the toilets are always clean. Furthermore, in the canteen, the food which
is split all over the floor is not cleaned well by the canteen workers, leaving behind stain and stench.

The next point of discussion was the safety of the students. Since the traffic is very heavy in front
of the school after school is over, there need to be a pedestrian crossing. Even a zebra crossing with a
traffic warden would be ideal for the time being. This is due to the fact that there have been minor
accidents in the past couple of months.

In general, the above-mentioned matters are such critical problems that deserve their due
attention. It is hoped that you will act accordingly and see that the problems are immediately addressed.
We need to urgently take action so that the students would have a safe, clean and comfortable
environment to study in. That is all for my report. Thank you.
