General Integrated Science Year 11

Unit 2
Term 2 5% of Year Assessment Semester/Year Semester 2 2017
Teacher Mrs Morritt Assessment Task 8 Infra-red sensors
Assessment Task 8 Design Brief
Design an introduction to the use of Infra-red temperature sensors for a class

Theme: Science Inquiry Practical Investigation

Mrs Morritt designed a preliminary Task to introduce you to the

use of the Non-Contact Thermometer with Laser Targeting,
shown in Figure 1. Edith Cowan University (ECU) loaned these
thermometers to us.

In Design Teams collaborate to critically analyse and improve

the design of the initial investigations that we did in class.
Communicate the Design Teams results and recommendations
for improvement to the class.
Figure 1: Non-Contact
The class will critically analyse the Team Investigations to build Thermometer
one Investigation that could be used in a Lower School class to
help them understand a concept.

RESEARCH / DOCUMENTATION
The research has been scaffolded. Each Design Team will download the Task Sheet from
Connect. Collaborate to complete all parts of the document, design and record responses on the
digital document. Add your Design Team number to the file name and upload it to Connect.

The Investigation Task Sheet
Laboratory apparatus, including: Bunsen burner, mat, gauze, matches, steel sheets and rods,
250mL beakers, masking tape, water, one Non-Contact Thermometer

PROCESSES: Discussions, testing of ideas, recording on Task Sheet and uploading to

Connect, under Submissions.

CRITERIA: The Investigation Task Sheet should be;

1. Completed as a Design Team, with any other recommendations.
2. File name changed to include the Number of the Design Team.
3. Conduct investigation following expected laboratory safety procedures.
4. The mark for this Task 8 will be distributed among each member of the Design Team

TIMELINE: Two lessons One for refining the design in Team and one for class presentation.
Upload the Investigation Task Document by the end of lesson 1.

PRESENTATION:
Each Design Team to present to the class and analyse the Investigation to produce one
Document. This Document will be presented to a representative of ECU.

Science Inquiry Skills

construct questions for investigation; propose hypotheses; and predict possible outcomes

plan, select and use appropriate investigation methods, to collect reliable data; assess risk and address ethical
issues associated with these methods

conduct investigations safely, competently and methodically for the collection of valid and reliable data

represent data in meaningful and useful ways; organise and analyse data to identify trends and patterns;
qualitatively describe sources of measurement error and use evidence to make and justify conclusions

interpret a range of scientific and media texts, and evaluate the conclusions by considering the quality of
available evidence

use appropriate representations, to communicate conceptual understanding, solve problems and make
predictions

communicate scientific ideas and information for a particular purpose, using appropriate scientific language,
conventions and representations

Science as a Human Endeavour

the use of scientific knowledge is influenced by social, economic, cultural and ethical considerations

the use of scientific knowledge may have beneficial and/or harmful and/or unintended consequences

scientific knowledge can enable scientists to offer valid explanations and make reliable predictions

Science Understanding
Atomic structure

the properties of elements, compounds and mixtures determine the use of substances
Energy

energy has different forms: kinetic, potential and heat, which can cause change
