Beginning in late May, yacht lovers are in for a spectacular treat: the kick- o
of the 35th Americas Cup presented by Louis Vuitton in Bermuda.
Defending the Americas Cup, the competition for the oldest trophy in
international sports (dating back to 1851), will be Oracle Team USA,
representing the Golden Gate Yacht Club, which won the Cup in 2010 and
2013. Five challengers will race one another over the course of a month to
go up against the Oracle team.
The long wait is finally over. After all of the preparation, all of the practice
racing, all of the talk and all of the anticipation from sports fans around the
world, the 35th Americas Cup is now upon us.
The 35th Americas Cup is being held at Golden Gate Yacht Club in
Bermuda.
Team Oracle USA is the defending champion after coming back to beat
Emirates Team New Zealand 9-8 in a thrilling final series at the same venue
in 2013.

guaranteed to defend the trophy).

Defenders Team USA Oracle drop out at this stage of the competition.
The top two challengers left slug it out in another best-of-nine series for a
place in the big one.
June 18-19: Americas Cup match
Defenders Team Oracle USA will take on the top challenger for The Auld
Mug in a best-of-13 (first to seven) series. Four races are held on the first
two days, then theres a crucial five-day break before the series resumes.
The Americas Cup dates back to 1851, is held every four years and attracts
some of the worlds best sailors, yachts entrepreneurs and sponsors. Much
like Formula One racing, its not only a test of skills but of teamwork,
technology and management.
The events ultimately come down to a series of match races between two
yachts the defender vs the challenger.
American, Swiss and New Zealand teams have dominated the event since
the turn of the millennium, while Australia scored a famous victory with
Australia II in 1983 but has not presented a challenger in three decades.
In The World Sailing Shows preview of the 35th Americas Cup, they take a
close look at the teams and consider how they might fare over the next five
weeks.
They will look at the road to the Americas Cup and explain what the
successful Challenger needs to do to be selected to take on the Defenders,
Oracle Team USA. Finally, they will find out directly from some of the
skippers about how hard these boats are to fly and how they rely on
innovative new technology.
