1.1 Shared Vision

Candidates facilitate the development and implementation of a shared vision for the use of
technology in teaching, learning, and leadership.

Reflection

The Vision Paper is intended to drive the future of technology development at Martin
Technology Academy of Math and Science. I used data, information, and supporting
documentation from stakeholders to develop a vision for technology in my school that was
shared with the stakeholders in my school community. A shared vision serves as the driving
force behind a technology implementation plan (ISTE, 2012). This vision is supported by
current research-based best practices of instruction, which are reflected by Sheninger (2014) in
which it is made clear that if schools dont evolve with society, they run the risk of becoming
irrelevant and not having the ability to prepare our students with the skills to compete in a global
society (p.34). This was an individual class project; however, I collaborated with both the
faculty and administration in my school when gathering perception data for the vision paper.

Standard 1.1, Shared Vision established the expectations for facilitating the development and
implementation of a shared vision in my school community. This artifact demonstrates my
ability to gather data from stakeholders, as well as use current research to support the
development of a shared technology vision at my school. According to ISTEs Essential
Conditions, a shared vision arises from the collaborative voices, goals and values of the
educators, support staff, students, parents, and community members within the system (ISTE,
2012). The information gathered from the perception survey sent out to stakeholders was used to
plan and develop a comprehensive shared vision for the future of technology integration at
Martin Technology Academy. Once the data and research were concluded, and the vision was
developed, the vision was then shared with administration at Martin. Administration saw value
in the work that had been completed and implementation of the plan is scheduled to begin in
2017. Administration was eager to share the vision with the School Improvement Team (SIT) to
see how to proceed with implementation of the vision, and how to effectively get the vision into
the hands of all stakeholders in our school community. I was able to present the vision to the
SIT team in May of 2016, and they were all impressed with the long range goals included in the
plan. The SIT team agreed to move forward with the implementation of the vision and
requested it be posted to our school website for feedback from more stakeholders in the
community. Feedback will be reviewed during the summer SIT meeting, and the vision will be
revised if needed.

Completing the Shared Vision for my school was a meaningful learning experience for me.
From this experience, I was able to better understand the ideas and goals our stakeholders have
for the future of technology integration in our school. This allowed me the opportunity to hear
from the many voices that have an impact on education at our school. It was a great opportunity
for me to work on synthesizing survey data and coming to big picture conclusions. If I could
improve upon this Shared Vision, I would take the time to reach out to more stakeholders,
including local businesses in our community. I would love to hear, and include in the vision,
how our local community could support the future of technology integration at Martin
Technology Academy.

A Shared Vision is important to help a school reach long term goals with technology integration.
When a school is guided by a clearly defined vision, a community of understanding and
collaboration develops to propel the organization forward in its mission (ISTE, 2012). This
Shared Vision gave Martin Technology Academy the paddle it needs to steer towards the future.
The vision statement outlined long range goals that are desired at Martin Technology Academy.
The next steps for this school would be to create SMART goals that are measurable and
attainable as stepping stones to reaching the big picture goals in the vision. The school could
then assess the impact of this vision by measuring the goals that have been created by the
stakeholders.
