1.

Polonez is a Polish dance in slow


time, which traditionally opened up balls
and weddings in country villages in
Poland. Couples walk arm-in-arm around
the ballroom with formal and straight
posture, smooth and elegant gestures
and the head held high with pride.
Polonez, Mazur, Kujawiak, Krakowiak
and Oberek are six national Polish
dances.

2. Flamenco is both a dance and


instrumental (mostly guitar) music from
Spain. Flamenco dancing is characterized
by colourful costumes, energetic

movements, stamping of the feet and
clapping of the hands.

3. Waltz is a music and a ballroom dance in time performed by a


couple. The Waltz is a folk dance from Austria. Waltz dance is very
smooth and elegant. It is characterised by long
flowing movements
around the ballroom. Johann Strauss wrote many beautifulwaltzes.

4. Irish stepdance is characterised by a stiff upper body and


quick leg
and foot movements. It can be performed solo or by groups. Some
dances use soft shoes, others use hard shoes. Dancers with hard
shoes stamp and tap the floor to make a rhythmic sound.

5. Tango is a powerful and expressive dance from Argentina. It is


traditionally played by a sextet with two violins, piano, double bass
and two bandoneons. Tango is based on improvisation full of dramatic
gestures, there are no set steps. The tempo can change, sometimes it
is slow and sometimes it gets quicker.
