2.3 Logical Structure

An AAU integrates the antenna and RF unit, and its main functional modules include an
antenna unit (AU), radio units (RUs), and a power module.
The following figure shows the logical structure of an AAU.

Figure 2-3 Logical structure of an AAU

An AAU performs the following functions:

l Receives downlink baseband data from the BBU and sends uplink baseband data to the
BBU.
l On the RX channel, receives RF signals through feeders, down-converts the RF signals
into IF signals, amplifies them, and performs analog-to-digital conversion (ADC). On the
TX channel, filters signals, performs digital-to-analog conversion (DAC), and up-
converts the RF signals to the TX band.

l Multiplexes RX and TX signals on the RF channel, which enables these signals to share
the same antenna path. It also filters the RX and TX signals.

The following table describes functional modules of an AAU.

Table 2-3 Functional modules of an AAU

Functional Function
Module

AU An AU functions as an antenna and a remote electrical tilt (RET).

An AU has a built-in remote control unit (RCU) that receives control
signals from the base station and drives the stepper motor. The stepper
motor drives the adjustable phase shifter in the AU through a gear to
adjust downtilts of the AU, thereby achieving the RET function.

RU An RU is a radio frequency unit, and it performs the following functions:

l Receives downlink baseband data from the BBU and sends uplink
baseband data to the BBU.
l Receives RF signals from the antenna system, down-converts the
received signals to IF signals, amplifies the IF signals, and performs
ADC. The TX channel filters downlink signals, performs DAC, and
up-converts RF signals to the TX band.
l Multiplexes RX and TX signals on the RF channel, which enables
these signals to share the same antenna path. It also filters the RX and
TX signals.

Power module A power module provides power for the AU and RU.

4.4 CPRI Fiber Optic Cables

CPRI fiber optic cables are classified into multimode fiber optic cables and single-mode fiber
optic cables. They transmit CPRI signals.
A multimode fiber optic cable connects a BBU to an AAU or connects two AAUs. A
multimode fiber optic cable connecting a BBU and an AAU is 150 m (492.13 ft) long at most.
A single-mode fiber optic cable is made by connecting a single-mode pigtail and a trunk
single-mode fiber optic cable through an outdoor distributed module (ODM). A single-mode
pigtail is 20 m (65.62 ft) and 70 m (229.66 ft) long at most on the BBU and AAU sides,
respectively.

NOTE

l An ODM interconnects a single-mode pigtail and a trunk single-mode fiber optic cable.
l The trunk single-mode fiber optic cables are provided by the customer and must comply with the
ITU-T G.652 standard.
l A multimode fiber optic cable and a single-mode fiber optic cable are connected to a multimode
optical module and a single-mode optical module, respectively.
