Senior market editor Catherine Lee Davis, a producer of the
luxury-themed Inspiration feature that begins on page 91,
has been developing her eye for precious stones and pearls
since she was a young girl captivated by her mothers antique
jewelry collection. It doesnt matter how many diamonds
wrap around a rose-gold cuff or the size of the topaz in a ring,
its the quality of the stone and how the setting is made,
says Davis. The best jewelers mix materials and design to
challenge us to look at their art in a fresh way.

SCAVOLINI
Flux Swing, a collection by Giugiaro Design for Scavolini, represents an evolution in design from the original Flux concept introduced over 10
years ago. The new collection conceptualizes space as enabling a dialogue between the kitchen and living room areas in which the two can
liaise perfectly with each another or act independently while maintaining a similar identity. The Flux Swing Kitchen (above left) stands out
for its unique shape as well as for its stylish color combination of Sun Yellow and Titanium Grey. The Scavolini Flux screen independent living
room solution (above right) is distinguished by wall units with Prestige White gloss lacquered shaped doors, to match with style the Alaska
Blue gloss lacquered finish on the shelves and wall claddings. For more information, visit scavolini.com.

DREAM PALACES
For much of the past century, painter Jere-
miah Goodman has evocatively captured the
living rooms, bedrooms, and libraries of
some the worlds brightest stylesetters, pro-
ducing glamorous portraits of spaces once
inhabited by Greta Garbo, the Duchess of
Windsor, and Tony Duquette. This spring, a
retrospective of the 94-year-old artists work
in Los Angeles brings together 55 of Good-

been displayed in public, like his moody

It was after her children had grown up and left home in 2010 that Jackie Villevoye decided
to realize her lifelong dream of becoming a fashion designer by launching Jupe by Jackie,
a collection of quirky blouses, trousers, dresses, and knitwear featuring hand embroidery
executed by a group of gifted artisans that she sought out, and ultimately employed,
in Indias Uttar Pradesh state. Seven years later, the Dutch designer has
ventured into interiors with her J-B-J Interior line of fabrics, pillows, and

Edwin Lands revolutionary click-peel-and-shake

hit with consumers, and it provided flexibility and
inspiration for artists as varied as painter Chuck

VILLAGE VANGUARD
I was an original SoHo brat, says furniture designer
Todd Hase, who opened his first showroom in that
once-bohemian Manhattan district when he was in his
20s. But times change, and so do neighborhoods. He
recently moved to a tree-lined street in the East Vil-
lage, with boutiques, bars, and storefront art galleries
all around. With its Beaux Arts facade and original tin
ceilings, Hase says, the new space is an ideal backdrop
for his Art Moderneinspired furniture designs, as well
as an array of vintage pieces, including Lucite tables
and Jean Dufy lithographs. I painted it white from ceil-
ing to floor, so when people are window-shopping at
night, post-cocktails, it glows (toddhase.com).

BRIGHT YOUNG THING

The fiery biblical drawings of poet William Blake might not seem like an obvious
inspiration for a new outpost of Londons famed Ivy restaurant, but then Blake
was born just down the street. Designer Martin Brudnizki has filled the Ivy Soho
Brasserie with burnt orangeleather banquettes, armchairs covered in cobalt and
mustard velvets, and graphic prints from floor to ceiling that joyfully pay trib-
ute to Blakes intensity, if not exactly his piety. The menus traditional Brit fare
(shepherds pie, kippers) has been similarly energized (theivysohobrasserie.com).

VINEYARD HAVEN
Outside of Cape Town, in the Breede Valley wine country, a glass-
walled chapel with a roof that mirrors the clouds is the latest ame-
nity for visitors to the historic Bosjes Wine Estate and guesthouse.
The creation of South Africaborn, London-based architect
Coetzee Steyn, the nondenominational sanctuary rises above the
vineyards and olive groves, offering open views of the mountains
beyond. Although modernist in attitude, the swooping roof has
roots in the past, says the architect, specifically an Old Testament
psalm that refers to Gods protecting wings, as well as the gables
of an 18th-century Cape Dutch house (bosjes.co.za).

R ITA KONIG

The daughter of prominent British interior

designer Nina Campbell, Rita Konig grew
up surrounded by fine furniture and fabric
swatches and has long worked to welcome
others into that world. With her London-
based interior design firm, she designs
sprightly spaces with a timeworn edge for
clients and hosts workshops for those who
just need a little help. A lot of people want
to do interior design for themselves, but
they dont completely know how, she says.
Konig also dispenses design advice through
her column in British House & Garden and as
the European editor of T Magazine. She is
always focused on easy livability. Its about
how you feel in the room, she says, not just
how it looks.

R ICHAR D McGEEHAN

When Richard McGeehan started out as a

dealer of high-style 19th-century American
decorative-arts pieces, he created show-
stopping room-like booths at antiques fairs.
Even as he sold antiques to such institutions
as New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Art
and Londons Victoria and Albert Museum,
private buyers desired more: They would
ask me to make a whole room or house for
them, says the New Yorkbased McGeehan.
Since jumping to interior design in the early
1990s, he has continued to search out excep-
tional objects with a curators eye, embrac-

Hayes always have a serene sense of edited
calm, where every object seems essential.
The way I like to think about it is that add-
ing or taking away one thing would throw the
equilibrium off, says Hayes, whose clients
have included Evelyn and Leonard Lauder.
Its an approach he began developing in the
early 80s, while working on homes with a
high-tech industrial edge at Bray-Schaible
Design. Since founding his own firm in 1985,
Hayes has become known for infinitely
softer and warmer rooms that give collector-
grade antiques and art serene settings and
room to breathe. Its a psychological and
an emotional thing, says Hayes. Minimalist
interiors make me feel better.

ELLE DECOR : This isnt the first house youve renovated on the
Spanish island of Ibiza, is it?

PASCAL CHEIKH DJAVADI: No. There have been a dozen going

back about 15 years. The typical Ibizan house is called a finca,
and it is a lovely stone peasant houseclosed against the sum-
mer heat and beautifully proportioned. But Casa Daria, as we
call this one, isnt a vernacular house. I would say its quite typi-
cal of the 1960s, when it was built.

ED: What did your clients want from this house?

PCD: They are a couple in their 40s with a young daughter. Hes a

for many years. Their only request was as many bedrooms as
possible, since this is a vacation home for family and friends.
So we combined the two units, added an internal staircase,
and removed the load-bearing walls on the lower level to cre-
ate one large, open living space. We made a new kitchen and
bathrooms, restructured the terraces, added a small pool, and
reworked the facades. We ended up with four bedrooms.

ED: How big is the completed house?

PCD: Its about 2,150 square feet. We changed the floor plan and
redesigned the terraces to make them more practical, but you
cannot get permission to expand the footprint today.

WHAT THE PROS KNOW

Vintage Gio Ponti tiles are expensive
and all but impossible to find in
quantity. So Djavadi had the Ponti-
designed ceramics for the floors
of Casa Daria custom made and
hand-painted by La Riggiola in Italy
(lariggiola.net). Other Ponti tiles are
still in production: Twelve of his blue-
and-white patterns for the 1962

Djavadi created the long, low box

does not have a flower pattern, says
the architect, which gives it a very
plain, very black graphic appearance.

Of course, doing things simply is often the most complicated.
The walls are American walnut, which is the same material as

When designer Jeffrey Alan Marks was hired for a project in the to make a house in the middle of L.A. look like a farmhouse in

reclaimed farmhouse boards.
My houses are very layered. He laughs as he explains that the
client wouldnt allow him to cover the windows. For her, a
feminine fabric is leather.
Instead, the construction materials create their own kind
of texture and layering. The corrugated metal that makes up
most of the ceilings was carefully placedby virtue of a graph
drawn up by the designerso that the rusted pieces would not
be grouped together. Most of the floors are polished concrete.
Then there was the cache of treasures the clients had stored
in units in Europe and L.A.: There were beautiful things that
had been inherited or collected, Marks says. I started putting
everything together in a way that wasnt messy or contrived.
Several of the decorative objects he discovered in storage
now reside on the contemporary shelves of the library, where,
Marks observes, they look fresh and new. It was also important
to him that the room not look overly decorated. To that end,
he surrounded a big center table with chairs that are differ-
ent and sort of wonky and hung an iconic artichoke pendant
light by Poul Henningsen above. I wanted it to look as though
this house had evolved over a hundred years, he says. Since
I couldnt layer in a lot of fabrics, I used a variety of furniture
that didnt match.

The gnomes were among the few things we took from their old
house, he says. She had a whole collection of them. I wasnt
totally happy about it at first, but in the end, I realized they were
needed. Likewise, the string lights in several of the outdoor
sitting areas are permanent fixtures. I wanted it to feel a little
like a farm picnic, says the designer.
Elements of elegance abound as well. In the master bedroom,
for example, Marks hung a wall of artworks from the couples
collection above a decidedly feminine Italian giltwood settee.
In the master bath, the carriage lights flanking the mirror and
the 19th-century jewelry box give the space some civility, he
says. You can tell these people lived in Europe by what they
collected.
In the end, the client got the rock-and-roll farmhouse she
desiredan idyllic, bucolic home that feels completely unex-
pected within its urban surroundings. Still, she is grateful that
her designer didnt let her get too carried away. Jeffrey calmed
us down and steered us away from getting too austere, she
says. He brought a feeling of comfortable luxury to the archi-
tecture, which is masculine and relatively simple in structure.
And while the project represented a departure for Marks, the
results, he says, are incredibly serene and rejuvenating, with
lush picking gardens overlooking the horse stables. I still cant

BEING ASKED TO CREATE AN APARTMENT in one of the tallest
residential skyscrapers to rise in midtown Manhattan in the
last few years would be a high-water mark for any designer.
The architect and designer Jamie Drake, whose swashbuckling
39-year career has taken a new turn due to his recent partner-
ship with former protg Caleb Anderson, concedes that even
heno stranger to ultra-luxurious commissionswas glad-
dened by the epic opportunity to deck out this sprawling pied-
-terre overlooking Central Park.
The clients are two grown siblings and their children, who
live abroad but alight in New York as often as their whirlwind
schedules will allow; they envisioned the apartment as a ref-
uge in the clouds. The project was a perfect fit for the design-
ers. Drake certainly has had plenty of experience channeling
the antiques-laden desires of the international elite: He made
his name designing several homes for former New York City
mayor Michael Bloomberg, including a classically adorned
Upper East Side limestone mansion, a 6,000-square-foot get-
away in Bermuda, and a vast formal townhouse in Londons
South Kensington neighborhood.
Still, the designer considers himself essentially a modernist.
As such, he has rejoiced in watching the zeitgeist move in recent
years toward a new kind of minimalism, one that eschews cold-
ness while embracing bold gesture. He gravitates toward simple
interiors with statement pieces by young artists, set off by a
backdrop of hand-hewn finishes. His own much-photographed
homea 3,000-square-foot Chelsea apartment in an Annabelle
Selldorf buildingis simultaneously a color riot, a pared-down
retreat, and a place to throw massive cocktail parties, complete
with late-night dancing.

143
The homeowners offered few parameters beyond wanting a
neutral palette of black, white, and gray; they understandably
requested that nothing should distract from the incomparable
skyline views. They also explained that they arent the type of
clients to micromanage the design of their homes, instead pre-
ferring to be surprised by a big reveal. Such freedom enabled
Drake and Anderson to push boundaries. We were relieved
in the end because it turned out to be exactly what they were
looking for, says Drake. Its relaxing and, at the same time,
stimulating.
In fact, the three-bedroom apartment is so high in the sky
that it has a spaceship feel, and the designers decided not to
fight that. The goal, says Anderson, was to create a glamorous,
transporting, otherworldly place that is extremely urbane.
Instead of bringing in a lot of vertical pieces to balance the
large scale of the rooms, most of the furniture is actually
streamlined and low-slungthe better to gaze out upon the
vast city and its rivers below, stretched out like a topographical
map. Smaller seating areas were arranged around the periphery
to encourage guests and family members to simply sit and drink
in the view.
While the designers largely hewed to the restrained palette
requested by the clients, they managed to sneak in a bit of azure
to echo the sky itself. In the living room, the blue adds a celestial
touch that enlivens the muted atmosphere while balancing the
graphic quality of the black Serge Mouille floor lamps. Through-
out the apartment, walls are embellished with subtly textured
surfaces ranging from plaster to shagreen.
The rooms are furnished with spectacular contemporary fur-
niture made by a new generation of artisans. Barlas Baylar of
Hudson Furniture created a console in the foyer that looks like
a pile of giant stones, including some bronze ones; in the liv-
ing room sits a jagged-looking mirrored chair by East London
based Julian Mayor that lends a note of Brutalism, says Drake.
To ensure the place doesnt look too much like a showroom,
the designers were careful to mix in some vintage pieces,
including chairs by Gio Ponti.
The art was also chosen to reflect both the 21st-century sen-
sibility of the owners and the incomparable setting. With so
little wall space due to the expanses of glass, each piece had
to carry enormous aesthetic weight. A large triptych by John
Noestheden on the dining room wall resembles an abstract star
chart, and a sculpture-cumlight fixture by the Dutch team Stu-
dio Drift is made of LEDs covered in ethereal, fluffy dandelion
headsreal ones.
We wanted the apartment to respond to where things are
headed, says Drake. You look out of these windows, and you
see everything: the man-made world and nature. And somehow,
its all in harmony.

screened porch. The formerly choppy interior has been recon-
figured to comfortably accommodate a contemporary family
of five. True to houses from this era, the rooms feel intimate,
with low ceilings. Its not a grand home, says Gambrel. Its
rambling and charming.
At the beginning of the endeavor, Gambrel walked the clients
through his own Sag Harbor residence. My husband and I fell
in love with its cozy elegance, the wife says. We wanted that
vibe, and Steven gave it to us. For their living room, Gambrel
chose a palette of pale neutrals. Its old Hamptons, he says,
sand and biscuit and oyster and driftwood, dry and not shiny.
The room is meant to look like its always been there. A lofty
family room now occupies the schoolhouse wing, which has a
similar color scheme but is accented in bursts of green and blue
that complement the garden outside the window. Bohemian
patterns give the room a younger, hipper feel.
A pair of run-down buildings in a corner of the yard posed a
challenge. One was a potting shed with a huge tree growing out
of the middle, the wife says. The other was a garage that was
so rotten with mold, I wouldnt let my kids near it. Gambrel,
working with Historical Concepts, transformed the structures
into an entertainment space and a guesthouse outfitted with a
bedroom, dining table, bar, and fireplace. The family installed
a pool, as well as an open-air glass pergola for lounging that
was inspired by a greenhouse-style dining pavilion the wife had
admired at Stockholms Ilse Crawforddesigned Ett Hem hotel.
The hardest part about working with Gambrel, the wife says,
is the fact that the home is now complete. When Steven leaves
your life, you feel like a little bit of creativity slips through your
fingers. Im dying to find another project to work on with him,
because he brings so much joy to the process.

WHEN AMERICAN SOCIALITE KATHERINE BRYAN
and her husband, Damon Mezzacappa, gave up their New York
City home to live in Palm Beach, he found he was missing what
she calls a metropolitan experience. While on holiday in
France, he said, We love Paris. Why dont we just buy an apart-
ment there? Bryan, a psychologist who honed a sharp eye for
architectural gems while working for Sothebys real estate
in New York, set off to the Left Bank and found a dilapidated
18th-century, first-floor apartment that had once been a part
of an htel particulier. It was steps from the Muse Rodin and
bathed in light, and Bryan could see the potential. I wasnt sure
Damon would agree, she recalls. But he said, If thats the one
you want, get it.
During her three marriagesto writer George Gurley, finan-
cier and telecommunications executive Shelby Bryan, and her
longtime friend, the widowed MezzacappaBryan moved
many times, she said, and she became so adept at decorat-
ing homes, usually with the aid of Mark Hampton, that she
occasionally guided friends with their places. For the Left
Bank flat, however, she knew she needed help. She had read
about Studio Peregalli, the Milan-based design team of Roberto
Peregalli and Laura Sartori Rimini, who were known for Renzo
Mongiardinoinspired decor and top-to-bottom renovations of
grand homes, and thought they might be the perfect fit. I knew
I didnt want to be minimalistic in that apartment, she says. I
felt it should be the way it already wasbut better.
With its soaring twelve-and-a-half-foot ceilings, original
plaster moldings, and a floor plan that flows easily from one
room to the next, Rimini says, The apartments bones were
really nice. But it needed some renovation and rearranging:
Rimini and Peregalli replaced the worn parquet with antique
oak flooring from Italy; created a formal dining room in what
had been a gallery, adding a gentle vaulted ceiling to make it
enveloping; and converted a smaller bedroom into a sumptu-
ous library.
For the decor, Peregalli says, We wanted to do our idea of
Francesomething 18th century, poetic. That meant, natu-
rally, loads of gold. But not Versailles-style bling, which,
Peregalli notes, is very strong and shiny. Instead, they chose
a more subtle and soft gold, like one finds in Italy, he explains.
Its not real gold leaf; its painted. Thats the difference. Its not
a grand and imposing atmosphere; its more cozy and intimate.
In the kitchen, they retained the original cabinetry but reposi-
tioned and extended it to line the entire space. The 18th-century
Portuguese tile on the backsplash is similar to what Rimini has
in her own kitchen. For the guest-room walls, Peregalli and
Rimini chose panels of 19th-century, Genoese mezzaro fabric
and had their artisans produce similarly hand-printed linen to
connect it all together. In the dining room, they enlisted artists

to paint floral vines in muted tones on antiqued mirrors, to give
the room a Flemish flavor of the 16th or 17th century, Peregalli
says. The mirrors also serve as an optical device: They enlarge
the room, Rimini explains, and the candles create a gentle,
flickering light at night.
Bryan traveled regularly to Paris to check in on the renovation
and was charmed by her designers. They spar a lot with each
other, but its amusing, she says. Its just the way they are. She
is the organizer, and he is the inventor-artist type. They have
wonderful taste, and they work together wonderfully.
Once the construction was complete, Peregalli and Rimini
took Bryan shopping for furniture and art in the Paris flea mar-
kets and visited the antiques dealers in the Carr Rive Gauche,
the gallery-laden neighborhood between the Quai Voltaire and
rue de lUniversit. At Fremontier, on the quay, they found a
roulette table that now serves as the dining table.
The biggest surprise for Bryan was when the designers chose
a pine-green paisley carpet based on a Madeleine Castaing
drawing for the bedroom. I would have used sea grass! Bryan
admits. So the idea of putting that design on the floor was sort
of a shock to me. But I love it. They had to push me sometimes,
because Im a creature of habit. Its much more elaborate than
anything Ive lived in before.
Sadly, Mezzacappa, her husband of four years, passed away in
2015, before the home was complete. But Bryan still uses it as
her pied--terre for long stretches each spring and fall, and she
hopes to welcome her three sons and their families there soon,
too. When Katherine arrives, all she needs is a bunch of flow-
ers, and thats it, Rimini says. Its really her Paris home.

ful dream is kept in check by an inner voice of caution: Surely
it would be too risky, too time-consuming, too dear. Designer
Ernest de la Torre has a knack for tuning out such misgivings,
at least judging by the house that he shares with his husband,
Kris Haberman, and their son, Parker. From the broadest ges-
ture to the smallest detail, their home is a testament to the
rewards of going all in.
Located in Snedens Landing, New York, a historic community
a dozen miles north of Manhattan, the house offers surprises at
every turn. A kitchen counter is inlaid with petrified wood; brass
parakeets pivot to turn on a bathroom faucet; cloud reliefs
float on hand-troweled plaster walls; blown-glass dragonflies
flit around translucent light fixtures; and raindrop mirrors cas-
cade down a wall. A garden theme unifies the house, but nature
here has a wonderland quality. I like things to be unique, says
de la Torre, so that someone cant come along and say, Well, I
could do that too. Id rather create something new.
Not that de la Torre jumped blindly down this rabbit hole.
Before undertaking the work, he and Haberman spent eight years
living with the homes limitations. The 1950s structure is a back-
split ranchone story in front, dropping to two at the back. In the
original configuration, all of the public rooms were on the upper
floor, with the bedrooms downstairs. We were always going out
the front door and around to the back of the house to be in the
beautiful yard, says de la Torre. So I had this crazy idea to take
the floor out, creating a double-height living room at the back.
Also swept into this somersault was the kitchen, which had been
situated by the front door. Once those changes were decided,
we pretty much repositioned everything, says de la Torrea
process that required structural reinforcements so complex,
the designer describes it as his masters degree in construc-
tion. It would have been cheaper to tear the place down and
rebuild, he admits. But the house would have lost its charm.
Another key goal was illuminating the interior. The house
was really dark, says Haberman, who works as an account
executive for ESI Design. To that end, the roof was punctured
with skylights, and solid walls gave way to expanses of glass.
Ive always ogled steel casement windows, says de la Torre,
who planned to use them in just the living room. But this is
how it starts with decorators, right? Now, the entire house is
outfitted with custom windows and matching doors.
Not to be outdone by this influx of sunlight, lamps and over-
head fixtures also offer flashes of brilliance. Im really big on
lighting, says de la Torre. It draws your eye. Its like jewelry.
A giant bronze cocoon light by Herv Van der Straeten hovers
above the living room, while a pair of Charles Rennie Mackin-
tosh sconces flickers beside a nearby fireplace.
The designer paid as much attention to how the house would
function and feel as to how it would look. Underlying every- The living rooms circa-1905

encourages lingering, just as virtually every wall surface begs
to be touched.
The eclectic mix of furnishings includes a handful of favor-
ite pieces the designer had stashed away in storage over the
yearsin particular, some whose outsize proportions had been
waiting for an outsize space like the living room. Giant newel
posts designed by Wendell Castle in the 1970s now serve as
pedestals; the cast-iron balconies came from a robber barons
house, he says. Equally grand is the span of years: An 18th-
century Robert Adam mantel faces a 1980s cocktail table by Sol
LeWitt. Its fun to have furnishings play off of each other, says
de la Torre, like an interesting cocktail party.
The renovation itself could not span a similar breadth of
years. Indeed, de la Torre had to meet a critical deadline: his
June 2015 wedding to Habermanwith the reception to follow
at their house. Yet even as that cutoff approached, de la Torres
imagination would not sit still. Just before the wedding, he
asked artist Shantell Martin to create a mural for the powder
room walls and door. She sat down with the two of us and said,
OK, tell me the story of your life. Then she disappeared into

A century ago, potato fields and agricultural barns were
as common on the eastern end of Long Island, New York, as
seagulls and swallows. Most of that land was later sold off for
residential development and golf courses; nowadays, original
barns on the South Fork are nearly extinct.
But 41 summers ago, when artist John Alexanderat the invi-
tation of Willem de Kooningdrove his 1970 El Camino from
Houston, where he was teaching, to the Hamptons, barns still
existedfor rent and sometimes for sale. In short order, Alex-
ander uprooted from Texas and moved into a SoHo loft, made
a name for himself on the downtown New York art scene, and
started renting summer places out east.
In the mid-1980s, Alexander learned that a pair of old barns
on a two-and-a-half-acre property in Amagansett would soon
come on the market. He envisioned the ideal setup for an art-
ist: He could paint in one barn and live in the other. No mat-
ter that someone was renting the property that summer and
the homeowner wouldnt let Alexander inside the converted,
connected buildings. He bought the barns sight unseen. (The
late-1960s bathroom, with its mirrored walls and sunken tub,
would not have been a deterrent.) It was perfect, he recalls.
I could move in and have a studio immediatelyI didnt have
to miss any work.

ABOVE: Artist John Alexander and ceramist Fiona Waterstreet, with

their cockapoo, Archie, at their Amagansett, New York, weekend house,
two linked barns that date from the late 18th or early 19th century; the
interiors are designed by Richard Mishaan. RIGHT: In the living area, the
sofa by Jonas and the cushions on the antique wood chairs are uphol-
stered in Brunschwig & Fils fabrics, the custom ottoman is covered in a
Cowtan & Tout fabric, and the lacquered cocktail table is from Mishaans
boutique, Homer Design; the side tables are English antiques, the lamps
are by Barbara Cosgrove, the sisal rug is by Patterson Flynn Martin, and
the painting, Poppies, is by Alexander. For details, see Resources.

In the family room, the beige sofa and the rug
are by Restoration Hardware, a custom sofa is
upholstered in a Cowtan & Tout stripe, the
leather armchair and cocktail table are antiques,
and the walls are painted in Benjamin Moores
Opaline. OPPOSITE: A George Smith chair in the
living area is covered in a Nina Campbell floral;
the charcoal drawing is by Alexander. For
details, see Resources.
When he wasnt painting, Alexander, who grew up in East
Texas, worked on cultivating the land. He planted lots of trees
(I didnt want to see the road, and the road didnt want to see
me) and, with the help of water lilies, cattails, and flowering
plants, made the pond on the property look like the Gulf Coast
swamps of his youth. The pond is my baby. Its an integral part
of my art, he says. I fell so in love with gardening and being
outdoors. My paintings softened because of that.
Other than removing a loft area in the main barn to create
more open space and jettisoning the bathroom decor, Alex-
ander sought to retain the rustic simplicity of the structures,
which date back to the late 1700s or early 1800s. The spartan
aesthetic lasted until he married Fiona Waterstreet, a vivacious,
color-loving, pattern-happy Englishwoman, who came into his
life with her young son, Harrison, two decades ago. I brought
my English sensibility, says Waterstreet, a ceramist. I wanted
boxwoods and lavender, that kind of thing.
Florals and botanicals of a different sort began to infiltrate the
interiors in the form of textiles, which Waterstreet passionately
collects. When, over time, her affinity for boldly upholstered
antiques and patterned pillows threatened to upend the barns
raw spirit, the couple called on their interior-designer friend
Richard Mishaan, who had previously helped decorate their
SoHo loft (ELLE DECOR , September 2014).
Mishaan, who has a weekend house in nearby Sag Harbor,
made a barn call. Fiona told me to get rid of anything, and I said,
Im going to disappoint you in a funny wayI wanted to keep
so much, Mishaan recalls of the charming vignettes that the
couple had assembled throughout. John said, If anyone comes

The desk in the study is antique, a George
Smith stool is covered with a Mexican serape,
and the painted wood flooring is original to
the barn; the artworks include a Chinese
watercolor, photographs by Ashley Pridmore
and Bernard Plossu, a framed antique Tibetan
thangka textile, and, on the desk, a portrait by
Jessica Benjamin of Waterstreets son,
Harrison. For details, see Resources.

a special knack for crafting eclectic, layered interiors that
always look balanced and orderly. Often, he lets the art dictate
the order. For the barns living and dining area, for instance, a
painting by Alexander of a field of poppies informed the pal-
ette. Mishaan introduced a beige animal print and upholstered
a pair of sofas in emerald velvet to play off the paintings foli-
age. (When Waterstreet found them too bright for summer,
slipcovers were made from an embroidered Mexican fabric.)
The couples dining chairs were refashioned with floral backs
but given plain fronts because, as Mishaan explains, there was
already a lot going on in the living area: We took it just to the
limits of where John was going to start to scream.
In the process of the redo, Alexander moved his painting stu-
dio to another place down the road, and the second barn was
transformed into a spacious family room, with a guest bedroom
above. Its Harrisons wing when Waterstreets now-27-year-
old son visits from Los Angeles, where he works at the talent
agency CAA. It retains all of the character of a rustic 200-year-
old barn, despite the polished look of a well-considered seating
arrangement and the gallery effect of the artists works.
Richard helped create a calmer, much more organized envi-
ronment, even though its very colorful, says Waterstreet of
the spruced-up home. I created clutter, she adds with a laugh,
and he cleaned it up.
