Artifact #2 fulfills the requirement for SPED 741 Methods and Assessment: Literacy
Interventions for Struggling Learners & Students with High-Incidence Disabilities. It is the
Common Core Standards Assignment. The purpose of this assignment was to select a specific
performance task in the area of language arts from the Common Core Standards and then to
analyze how you would help a selected student accomplish this task and what, if any supports
were necessary. It was also necessary to determine how the supports would be implemented .
To complete this assignment, I selected a common core task at the ninth grade level that
asked students to analyze how the artistic representations of Rameses II vary based on what is
absent or present in different works of art. I selected my own son who was a ninth grade student
at the time and has been classified with a specific learning disability. After describing the
student and challenges he experiences in reading and writing, I used given questions to analyze
the discrepancy that would be experienced by this student regarding this task. I then used
information about the students current abilities and skills to determine appropriate ways to
differentiate this task. Next, I composed an intensive personalized intervention plan for this
student in order for him to complete the expected common core task.
I did not choose to revise this assignment based on receiving full credit and the analysis
of my performance by my instructor. While I do feel the personalized plan that I constructed for
my son to complete this particular performance task is sound. I do struggle with an instructor
being able to adequately implement the plan due to time and manpower limitations. I feel this
would be an excellent opportunity for his general education and special education teachers to
work collaboratively to ensure that the student can be successful, but I am concerned about the
reality of being able to accomplish such an effort, especially for one student. I do think this

would be best served in a co taught environment. That would allow the student to access the
materials and curriculum with the added supports that would help him be more successful.
