1. What is Geography?
Geographys definition according to the book World Geography Affected by World Upheavals is it is
the field of knowledge that studies the relationship between the earth and its people.
Geography is interdisciplinaryit incorporates bits and pieces from the fields of science, arts, health,
humanities, law, business, engineering, and technology. The geographic perspective (a way to
understand a topic or area using spatial relationships) focuses these bits and pieces into a dynamic
kaleidoscope of ideas and data. Geography is something you do, not just something you know. -
(National Geographic)
A common shorthand for geography is "the why of where."
Geography is a study of the earth and the people in it.

2. Identify the components of each element of geography

Physical Cultural
o Rocks and minerals o Economic Activities
o Landforms o Traditions
o Soils o Religion
o Animals o Recreational Activities
o Plants o Social Traditions
o Water o Political Systems
o Atmosphere o Urban Systems
o Bodies of Water
o Environment
o Climate and Weather

o Geomorphology
o Hydrology
o Glaciology
o Biogeography
o Climatology
o Meteorology
o Pedology
o Paleogeography
o Oceanography
o Coastal geography
o Landscape geography
o Geomatics

3. Enumerate the branches of geography

o Human Geography
This is a main branch in geography and it mainly covers studies of the human race. This normally involves their
backgrounds, how they interact and the perceptions that they have for various ideologies affecting them. In
addition to this, the discipline also studies the way in which the groups of people that inhabit the earth
organize themselves on the particular regions that they inhabit. As a matter of fact, many other branches of
geography normally fall under human geography.
o Physical Geography
Physical geography is a major branch of the science and it mainly deals with the study of the natural
characteristics of the earth. It covers both the ones that are on the earths surface as well as those near it.
More: Sub-branches of Physical Geography.
o Cartography
Geographers who study cartography are usually more involved in the mapping of things. In general, every
geographer must have the essential knowledge that is required in displaying data on maps. Cartography
focuses on ways in which the entire mapping procedure can be technologically advanced by creating maps
that are generally of higher quality.

4. Discuss the importance of geography as a course.

Geography is a very relevant subject as the topics covered by geography are mans relation with his
environment, and mans relation with other men. Geography is a focus within the curriculum for
understanding and resolving issues about the environment and sustainable development. It is also
an important link between the natural and social sciences. As pupils study geography, they encounter
different societies and cultures.

1. To understand basic physical systems that affect everyday life (e.g. earth-sun relationships, water
cycles, wind and ocean currents).
2. To learn the location of places and the physical and cultural characteristics of those places in order to
function more effectively in our increasingly interdependent world.
3. To understand the geography of past times and how geography has played important roles in the
evolution of people, their ideas, places and environments.
4. To develop a mental map of your community, province or territory, country and the world so that you
can understand the where of places and events.
5. To explain how the processes of human and physical systems have arranged and sometimes changed
the surface of the Earth.
6. To understand the spatial organization of society and see order in what often appears to be random
scattering of people and places.
7. To recognize spatial distributions at all scales local and worldwide in order to understand the
complex connectivity of people and places.
8. To be able to make sensible judgements about matters involving relationships between the physical
environment and society.
9. To appreciate Earth as the homeland of humankind and provide insight for wise management decisions
about how the planets resources should be used.
10. To understand global interdependence and to become a better global citizen.
