ing on the media used.
In quilting we use texture in a variety of ways. Normally our fabrics
are not textured themselves such as corduroy or velvet but the tex-
ture can be implied through the imagery printed on the fabric.
Texture can also be achieved
in the construction of quilt
blocks through fabric manipu-
lation (pleats, folds, tucks or
scrunching) or in the quilting.
Trapunto or corded quilting
adds texture in the design.
Embellishments such as bead-
ing and embroidery also add
texture.
Are there other ways to add
texture to our work…….let’s
talk!

ine how they used colour, line, shape, texture and size. I chose
Freiderich Hundertwasser, 1928-2000, an Austrian who worked as
a free spirit and loved to use colour in a wild and exuberant manner.
Many of his paintings used the spiral as an important part of his
work.
I took the motif and painted spirals of many colours. As a quilter, it
was natural to cut the spirals into squares and reassemble them to
create a quilt-like painting.
Have you considered using an artist as inspiration for your art work?
If you Google artists like Hundertwasser, Matisse, Picasso, Joan
Miro or Kandinsky you will find dozens of images to inspire and ex-
cite you.
