Answer Sheet

Instructions:

This is an open-book exam. You may refer to your text and other course materials as you work
on the exam, and you may use a calculator.

Record your answers and work in this document.

There are 30 problems.

Problems #1-12 are multiple choice. Record your choice for each problem.

Problems #13-21 are short answer. Record your answer for each problem.

Problems #22-30 are short answer with work required. When requested, show all work and write
all answers in the spaces allotted on the following pages. You may type your work using plain-
text formatting or an equation editor, or you may hand-write your work and scan it. In either
case, show work neatly and correctly, following standard mathematical conventions. Each step
should follow clearly and completely from the previous step. If necessary, you may attach extra
pages.

You must complete the exam individually. Neither collaboration nor consultation with
others is allowed. Your exam will receive a zero grade unless you complete the following
honor statement.

Please sign (or type) your name below the following honor statement:

I have completed this final examination myself, working independently and not consulting
anyone except the instructor. I have neither given nor received help on this final examination.

Answers:

(a) -6

(b) Whole real line except x=5

Work/for part (a) and explanation for part (b):

22 (+2)
a) The function are f(x)=( + 2) and g(x)=x-5, therefore () = 5
(1+2) 1
Hence (1) = = 6
15

b) The domain of the quotient function is whole real line except x=5 because if
x=5 then the quotient function will be undefined.

Answers:

(a) The equation of the circle through these two points is

(x-3)*(x+5)+(y-2)*(y-6)=0
x2+y2+2x-8y-3=0
Comparing these equation with the general circle equation
x2+y2+2gx+2fy+c=0 whose center (-g, -f) and radius is =2 + 2
From these two equation we get g=1 and f=-4 and c=-3
23
Therefore the radius is =12 + (4)2 (3)=20
Hence the diameter of the circle is =220 = 45

(b) The center of the circle (-1, 4)

(c) The point which is symmetric about the center of the circle is (-1, -4)

Answer: y=-2x+5
Work:
24 The equation of the line which passes through (2,1) and (6, -7) is
71
y-1= 62 ( 2)
=>y-1=-2(x-2)
=> y-1=-2x+4
=> y=-2x+5 which is also in intercept form.

Answer: 38250
Work:

Let the amount of sales is x.

Total amount of commission he will get on sales =x*7.8%
He will get total paycheck=$1560+x*7.8%
25
Also given that paycheck for one month is $4543.50
We know $1560+x*7.8%=$4543.50
=>x*7.8%=$4543.50-$1560=$2983.5
$2983.5100
=>x= = 38250
7.8
Hence the amount of the sales is 38250.

26 Work for part (a) and for part (b):

Given functions are f(x)=5x2-4 and g(x)=x-3

The composite function f() = (()) = ( 3) = 5( 3)2 4 = 5 2
30 + 41

fog(2)=5*22-30*2+41=1

Answer: x=f(y)=6(y-8)

Work:

The given function is y=f(x)=8+6
28
Then 6 = 8
=>x=6(y-8)
Hence the inverse function of the given function is x=f(y)=6(y-8)

Answers:

(a) $250

(b) 922

29 Work for (b):

We will find out the Donut for which the profit will be maximum, for these we will
plot the function and below it is
Math 107 Final Examination Fall, 2015 6

From the above graph we will find the point on graph for which the profit is
maximum, the point A in the graph is maximum point for the profit and its co-ordinate
is (922, 552).
Hence for the maximum profit 552 the donuts will be 922.

Answer: x=-6, 3

Work:

(+9)(6)+36
30 =0
2 36
( + 9)( 6) + 36 = 0
x2 +3x-54+36=0
x2+3x-18=0
x2+(6-3)x-18=0
x2-6x-3x-18=0
(x+6)(x-3)=0
x =-6, 3
