VIETNAM EXHIBIT OPENING- Where were you in 1962

?.....watching the escalation of military action in Vietnam as our
men and women in the military were sent in increasing numbers?
Television allowed the citizens at home to watch scenes of new
daily conflicts. The home front was in conflict as well. Culture
and social behavior was being challenged in a big way. The Cam-
bridge Historical Society is taking a glimpse into this era. They
are attempting to acknowledge that traditions were altered and
are trying to touch upon the many forces that collided during this
time. The Society especially wants to recognize the men and
women in uniform at that time and their families and say thank
you for their many sacrifices. On Wednesday, June 21st, the Cam-
bridge Historical Society Museum, 12 Broad St., will begin a
summer-long exhibit of the Vietnam era. There will be special
exhibits brought in by those who were in Vietnam or had rela-
tives there. There will be a wall of honor recognizing veterans
who served, many pictures and memorabilia. From 5:00 to 7:00
p.m. there will be a reception with refreshments and a chance to
look at exhibits, etc. and talk with those who experienced this
time, whether in the service or not. This is a wonderful time for
our young people to learn a history lesson. The input of local
communities will make this a truly informative, interesting com-
memorative event. All interaction is welcomed. The Society is
grateful to Capt. Maxson American Legion Post for their help
and input. At 7:00 p.m. there will be a program presented by two
veterans who were in Vietnam, E.J. Lybert and Dan Severson,
who will share their experiences. The program is free, but dona-
tions are welcome.

Genealogist, to be held: Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, 9:30 a.m. Spon-
sored by the Welsh-American Genealogical Society, Inc. (WAGS),
this seminar will be held in the Town Room of historic (1805)
United Baptist Church, On the Green, East Poultney, Rutland
County, Vermont, a handicap accessible site. If youve ever wanted
to understand what all the fuss is about DNA, the presentation
DNA and Genealogy will enable you to understand its use in
your genealogy research, in a complete and easy-to-understand
format. Presented by Susan Davies Sit of Glastonbury, Connecti-
cut, a member of WAGS, one will learn about the top companies
selling DNA tests, how to read the results and what it means for
your research. The presentation has a leaning towards Welsh ge-
nealogy but is suitable no matter your ethnicity or your roots.
Additionally, Susan may expand upon some of the topics discussed
during her presentation given in 2016 in Poultney. Susan, a native
of Colwyn Bay, Wales, has been researching for more than 40
years her own family heritage branches as well as her husbands,
which jointly include research in Wales, England, Scotland, the
U.S.A. and China. In addition to being a member of WAGS, Su-
san is President of the Welsh Society of Western New England
and a member of the Gwynedd Family History Society (UK). A
limited number of one-on-one sessions may also be held with Susan
following luncheon. Bring your own bag lunch, or if you prefer,
ample time will permit one to go across the street to the historic,
now 155-year old, East Poultney General Store to purchase lunch
from its deli. Attendees are invited to bring a Welsh dessert to
share for the luncheon. Also after the luncheon, The Reverend
Todd Eaton of the United Baptist Church will be available to pro-
vide a guided tour of the historic chapel; the chapel and its com-
munity which helped to shape the formative years in the life of the
late George Jones, co-founder of The New York Times newspa-
per. Jones was born in East Poultney, Vermont of Welshborn
parents having emigrated to America from Montgomeryshire,
Wales in the late 1700s. All interested genealogists are welcome
to register for this seminar. The DNA presentation is pertinent to
all heritages; not only Welsh. PLEASE NOTE: Seating for this
event is limited; registration is first come, first serve. Cost: $30.00
(U.S. currency) per person pre-paid registration is required no later
than Saturday, August 26, 2017 through the Welsh-American Ge-
nealogical Society, Inc. (WAGS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organi-
zation. Tax-deductible donations and/or commercial sponsorships
to WAGS will be gratefully received and publicly acknowledged.

In the warmer (and drier!) months, we live outside and use the house only for evening
shelter. Sometimes we even pitch a tent in the backyard and cook dinner over the campfire,
burning up the trees that fell during the previous winter and spring storms. This year, we
lost three trees. There will be plenty of wood for June fires, I tell them as we save Peeps
leftover from Easter to roast over the bonfire as a funny sort of science experiment. For
now, I watch the boys gather sticks and add them to the woodpile. In their red Super
Mario shirts, they remind me of cardinals building their nests. Up and down the length

I think about my own nest, this little house that feels smaller all the time. My oldest son

who will be taller next year, my son or the pear tree. And I stand on the front steps,
watching the world shrink around my three boys as they speed off to see the sunset, their
arms outstretched like wings against the pink-orange sky.
