THE ATMOSPHERE

When you lookup in the

sky you will see a vast space
which is a thousand miles
farther from you. It is
what we all call the atmos-
phere.
In this Strategic Inter-
vention Material you will
know details about the
EARTHs ATMOSPHERE.
Have fun while reading
and learning!

This Strategic Inter-

vention Material (SIM) helps
you to know about:

THE ATMOSPHERE

LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE

TROPOSPHERE extends between 9 km
at the poles and 17 km at the equator. This
lower part of the atmosphere is responsible
for our weather.
STRATOSPHERE it extends up to 50 km
above the earths surface. It is where the
ozone layer is located and it is a place where
most aerial vehicle flies to avoid weather
disturbances on the troposphere,
MESOSPHEREextends from the top of
the stratosphere to about 80 km, The tem-
perature here will drop at the top of it may-
be lower than 75c .
THERMOSPHEREranges from 80 km to
about 400 km above t earth. In this layer
temperature increase rapidly with altitude.
Satellites orbits the earth at this height.
THE ATMOSPHERE

IMPORTANCE OF THE
ATMOSPHERE
The atmosphere protects earth's life
forms from harmful radiation and cos-
mic debris such as the meteors.
It also protects humans from the
harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun
through the ozone layer.
Influences the weather that is con-
sists of the day-to-day fluctuations of
environmental variables and includes
the motion of wind and formation of
weather systems such as hurricanes.

Draw an oval on the lightest blue paper with your compass. The per

Take the next piece of paper and create a larger circle with a
radius of 6 cm.
Cut out the circle and label it Stratosphere. The diameter of
this circle is 12 cm.
The final circle should have a radius of 8.2 cm.
Cut out the circle and label it Mesosphere. The diameter of this
circle is 16.4 cm.
Label the last square of blue paper Thermosphere.
Glue each of the circles one on top of the other to make the
