Juan Mayorga

Short presentation:
Juan Antonio Mayorga Ruano ( Madrid , April 6, 1965) is one of the most represented
contemporary Spanish playwrights of the generation called, not without some controversy ,
Generacin Bradomn . 1 His dramaturgy, profound, committed and methodical, 2 3 has
transcended the national barriers to be translated and represented in the main European
theaters. 4 He is a regular contributor to companies such as Animalario and has worked as an
Adapter and Playwright for the National Drama Center and the National Classic Theater
Company . He was a founding member of the Academy of the Performing Arts of Spain and
currently directs the Chair of Scenic Arts 5 of the Carlos III University of Madrid . He is married
and has three children.

Biography:
Born in 1965 , he grew up in the Madrid neighborhood of Carabanchel . In 1988 he graduated in
Philosophy and Mathematics . Research Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy of the CSIC , under
the direction of the philosopher Reyes Mate , extended studies in Mnster , Berlin and Paris .
He received his doctorate in Philosophy in 1997 with a thesis on Walter Benjamin . 6

Professor of mathematics since 1994, he taught in institutes in Madrid and Alcal de Henares
for five years. He is also Professor of Drama and Philosophy at the School of Dramatic Art in
Madrid. He has directed the seminar Memory and thought in contemporary theater in the
Institute of Philosophy of the CSIC and is director of the Chair of Performing Arts of the Carlos III
University of Madrid . His most important philosophical works are Revolutionary Conservative
Revolution and Conservation. Politics and memory in Walter Benjamin and Ellipses .

Dramaturgy:
In 1993 , together with the playwrights Jos Ramn Fernndez , Luis Miguel Gonzlez Cruz and
Ral Hernndez Garrido , he founded the Teatro del Astillero . In a 2008 statement he stated:
"The Shipyard began as the meeting place of some authors that we agreed in a workshop of
Marco Antonio de la Parra , which also included Angelica Liddell . We stayed to read our texts
and to comment them. Then, we were joined by Guillermo Heras , who began to put them on
the scene and publish them. And it still remains for us a space of agitation, meeting and
migration of ideas. I feel that I owe as much to El Astillero as to Guillermo. " 8 In 2011 he
founded the company La Loca de la Casa, with which in 2012 he staged his work La lengua en
pieces and in 2015 his work Reikiavik . The critic Marcos Ordez speaks of certain references
in the work of Mayorga with the English theater: Tom Stoppard , David Hare or Harold Pinter .

Theatrical work:
Juan Mayorga is the author of numerous theatrical works. We can distinguish between his
thesis theater, his comedies, his poetic works and his brief pieces. His first work, Seven Good
Men , accsit of the award Marqus de Bradomn, published in the volume Marqus de
Bradomn 1989 (1990), wrote it at the age of 24 and has not yet been released. Since then, his
dedication to the theater has been increasing and his works count on one or two per year.

Awards and performances:


Among other has won the following awards: Europa New Theatrical Realities (2016), Prize
National Theatre (2007), Valle-Inclan (2009), Ceres (2013), La Barraca (2013), National Dramatic
Literature (2013), National Prize of the Letters "Teresa of vila" (2016) and Max to the best
author (2006, 2008 and 2009) and to the best adaptation (2008 and 2013).

His theater has been staged in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile,
Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cuba, Denmark, Ecuador, Spain, the United States, France,
Greece, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal,
Romania, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay and Venezuela and translated into
German, Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian Czech Chinese Danish Slovenian Esperanto

His work The boy in the last row has been adapted to the cinema by Franois Ozon in the film
Dans la maison (Concha de Oro for the best film and Jury Prize for best screenplay at the San
Sebastian Festival 2012).
