Answer ALL SEVEN (7) questions

Note: You should always give precise and adequate explanations to support your
conclusions. Clarity of presentation of your argument counts: So think carefully
before you write.

P.1of4
1. Let
Ix! siny
if (x,y)#-(0,0),
J(x,y) ={ ylx2 +y2
0 if (x, y) = (0, 0).
(a) (3 points) Show that f is continuous at (0, 0).

(b) (2 points) Find V' f(O, 0).

(c) (2 points) Using the definition, find the derivative off at (0, 0) in the
direction of u = (l/\1'2)i + (1/\1'2)j.

(d) (2 points) Is f differentiable at (0, O)? Why?

2. Let f(x,y) = x 3 -y3 -2xy+8.

(a) (3 points) Find all critical points off.

(b) (3 points) Using the second derivative test, classify all the critical points
off.

3. (6 points) The plane x - 2y + 2z = 1 cuts the cylinder x 2 + y 2 = 5 in an

ellipse. Find the greatest and smallest values that the function

J(x,y,z) = 3x+2y+2z

takes on the ellipse.

4. (5 points) Evaluate JJl z dV, where Dis the solid hemisphere x 2+y2+z2 :.::;
1, z ::>: 0.

5. (6 points) Evaluate Jl ,,/x(2y- x) dxdy, where R is the parallelogram in

the xy-plane bounded by the lines x = 0, x = 2, 2y = x, 2y =x+ 2.

6. Consider the system

X1 + X2 + ax 3 1
X1 + ax2 + Xg - 1
ax1 + X2 + Xg 1

where a is a constant.

P.2 of 4
(a) (4 points) For which values of a will the system have a unique solution,
infinitely many solutions or no solution?

(b) (3 points) Solve the system when it is consistent.

7. Let

A= (-~ =i -~ ) .
1 1 1

(a) (3 points) Find all eigenvalues of A.

(b) (4 points) For each eigenvalue of A, find a basis for the corresponding
e1genspace.

(c) (4 points) Write down a nonsingular matrix X that diagonalizes A. Find

also x- 1.
