The Boreal Forest

By David Cannon
Terrain
The Boreal Forest is one of Canada's most important Ecosystems. It contains
about 1.5 Million lakes is madealmost one third wetlands. It containssome of
Canada's major rivers such as the Mackenzie River, the Yukon River, the Slave
River and the Severn River. There are a lot of necessarynatural disturbances in
the Boreal Forest such as insects and forest fires that destroy the old trees which
make room for the next generation of treesandreleasing nutrients while they
decay.
Flora and Fauna
The Boreal Forest is home to a lot of different trees such as Balsam fir, Black
spruce, Eastern red cedar, Jack pine, White fir and lots of other trees. The Boreal
Forest is the best breading ground for many birds in all of Canada. It is also
home to a 150 different species of birds which is half of all the bird species in
Canada! The Boreal Forest has numerous other types of animal like the Bald
Eagle, Red Fox, Black Bear and lots of Woodland Caribou.
Human interaction
70% of the Aboriginal communities in Canada live in the Boreal forest. For the
Aboriginal communities in the Boreal Forest it is culturally and economically
significant to them. 94% of Canada's forests are publicly owned land so that the
government can regulate the harvesting practices that go on there, For example
any tress that are cut down must be replanted or allowed to grow back to set
standards. Canada's Boreal Forest is part of the Boreal zone that loops around
the world. Canada has 28% (552 million hectares) which is the largest amount
that in the world, which is why the government has put in a lot of laws and made
parts of Canada's Boreal Forest conservation zones because it is a big natural air
filter for Canada and the rest of the world.
Conclusion
The boreal forest is a huge part of Canada's environmentbecause of air
purification and because of economic reasons such as wood production and the
jobs it creates. It is culturally significant to Canadian aboriginal community's and
crucial to rest of the world because it is the largest part of the Boreal zone in the
world.
