Since 1934, Budapest proudly wears the Spa city title,
but its good to know, that its unique facilities were fully
recognised by Roman legionaries over 2000 years ago!
Bringing Baths, day spas and lidos are an
your swimsuit integral part of Budapest life, all

thermal spas are
waiting for you! pool parties. Budapest is excep
tional for being a capital rich in
thermal springs and aquifers, pro
viding eight therapeutic spas and
several lidos with thermal waters
that have proven health benefits.
These thermal springs have been
popular for a very long time ac
cording to archaeological finds of
18 Roman baths around Aquin
cum, on the site of one of which
is the Rmai Lido today. Spa cul
ture really flourished under Turk
ish occupation during the 16th
and 17th centuries, bathing being
an important part of social and
religious life. Of the eight baths
built in the period two can still

be enjoyed today in their original
function, the Rudas and Kirly
baths in Buda. Rudas has been ex
tended with swimming pools and
health treatments over the years,
but the Turkish part of the build
ing still retains its original layout
of a central pool surrounded by
smaller pools of varying tempera
ture, going all the way up to 42C
under a domed ceiling. Previously
open only to men, since the 2005
renovations Rudas is open to
both sexes on certain days, most
notably during late night sessions
on the weekends that are an un
missable experience for any visi
tor to Budapest. The third golden
age of Budapest spa culture start
ed in the second half of the 19th
century and we can safely say
that its still going strong today.
The Balneological Society was

founded to study and promote
the health benefits of the thermal
waters found under Budapest,
and the first hot water artesian
aquifer was drilled on Marga
ret Island, then in City Park. Old
baths were renovated and new
ones built that today provide not
only medicinal benefits and rec
reation, but are significant tour
ist attractions, the most popular
of them being the Gellrt, Lukcs
and S zchenyi baths. Szchenyi,
the largest spa complex not on
ly in Hungary but in Europe as
well celebrated its 100th anni
versary in 2013. The lavishly dec
orated building houses several
indoor and outdoor pools, the
thermal waters of which are par
ticularly beneficial for joints, and
there are massages and medical

not have to travel far south from

garian Plain. The Kiskunsg
National Park is a designated

heaven for birdwatchers. The ro
mantic islands and waterways
of Rckeve, along the Kis-Du
na (small Danube) offer an ideal
destination for lovers of cycling,
walking and rowing. Etyek lies at
the southern edge of the Zsm
bk Basin, where the gently roll
