Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of
communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech.
When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which
motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf and the mute have had to resort this form of
expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be used
internationally; spelling, however, cannot.
Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or
unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies
approval, while shaking the head indicates negative reaction.
Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with
the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide,
warn and instruct people.
While verbalization is the most common form of language, other system and techniques also
express human thoughts and feelings.

The nuclear family, consisting of a mother, father, and their children, may be more an American
ideal than an American reality. Of course, the so-called traditional American family was always more
varied than we had been led to believe, reflecting the very different racial, ethnic, class and religious
customs among the American groups.
The most recent government statistics reveal that only about one third of all current American
families fit the traditional mold and another third consists of married couples who either have no
children or have none still living at home. Of the final one, about 20 percent of the total number of
American households are single people, usually women over sixty-five years old. A small percentage,
about 3 percent of the total, consists of unmarried people who choose to live together, and the rest, about
7 percent, are single, usually divorced parents, with at least one child. Today, these varied family types
are typical, and therefore, normal. Apparently, many Americans are achieving supportive relationships in
family forms other than the traditional one.

C. The current American family. D. The ideal family.
