Farmers hoarding fertilizer may cause shortages: AIC

Analysis:-
In Nepal, Uses of chemical fertilizer has grown steadily, much of that growth has occurred in the
Terai region. From the article of Mr. Shankar Acharya we find that uses of chemical fertilizer has
increases and the market has been reeling under a shortage of fertilisers despite regular supply of
adequate quantity of urea and diammonium phosphate (DAP). Agriculture Inputs Company has
been supplying chemical fertilisers in 16 districts of Narayani, Lumbini and Janakpur zones.
According to Ajay Kumar Srivastav, head of Agriculture Inputs Companys regional office in
Parsa says that Agriculture Inputs Company supplied 12,399.05 tonnes of urea and 859 tonnes
of DAP in between May 16 to June 12, This supply is higher than in the last two to three years,.
But many of the fertilizers have been already sold so that only few amount of fertilizers remain
in stock and the paddy plantation season is near to come, if this continuous there is a high
chances of chemical fertilizer shortage.

As we know that there is less number of productions of chemical fertilizer in Nepal and they are
imported from other countries mostly form India. Imported fertilizers too are not regularly
available in that market that is also one of the reasons for the shortage. Lack of efficient fertilizer
distribution system increases the negative impact on the farmers productivity. From the article
we find that there is the chances of shortage of chemical fertilizer which might be due to the lack
of knowledge of using fertilizer in right time with right quantity. Analyzing the real market cases
we find that chemical fertilizer are shortages in public distribution center like AIC and in private
distributor fertilizer are available with high cost. So, more focused should be given in this case
because it directly effects in productivity. Thus, the government needs to adopt useful activities
aiming to raise public awareness and motivate the farmers to use balanced doses of fertilizer and
other complementary inputs.
