Overview
What Is the GHLO Collaborative?
The Global Health Learning Opportunities (GHLO) Collaborative (pronounced glow) is an innovative
international program composed of two major components: the GHLO Application Service, which
facilitates mobility for emerging health professionals, and GHLO Connect, which provides opportunities
for faculty and institutional engagement. Collaborators are faculties and schools of medicine, hospitals,
and nonprofit organizations committed to context-based transformational learning.
Mission: To provide a global network that facilitates educational mobility for health
professionals.
The GHLO Collaborative has accepted more than 100 institutions, some of which are participating in a
role as Home (sending their students abroad), some as a role of Host (accepting incoming students), and
many as both Home and Host.
Click here to see the most updated list of GHLO collaborating institutions.
The AAMC strengthens the worlds most advanced medical care through programs and services that
support the entire spectrum of education, research, and patient care activities conducted by member
institutions. Along with our member institutions, we are dedicated to the communities we serve and
steadfast in our desire to earn and keep the publics trust for the role we play in improving the nations
health. Learn more about the AAMCs mission, vision, and goals at aamc.org.

Mission: The AAMC serves and leads the academic medicine community to improve the health of
all.
Vision: The AAMC and its members envision an educational continuum that produces the
medical workforce for todays and tomorrows health needs; a health care system that is high
quality, safe, equitable, and affordable; and a national commitment to discover new knowledge
that continually improves health. To achieve this vision, the AAMC and its member medical
schools and teaching hospitals must be integral to the efforts to improve the nations health care
system. With a unique role in educating and training tomorrows doctors and other health
professionals, a track record of innovation, and the ability to discover, disseminate, and evaluate
new scientific knowledge, the academic medicine community can lead the changes that will
improve our nations health.

Some Definitions
Student Browser: Students may be given browser access to the GHLO Application Service, which
allows them to log on and search and save electives, but not to apply to any.
Student Applicant: Applicants are able to log in and search and apply to electives abroad through the
GHLO Application Service.
Home Institution: The Home institution is the institution from which students will receive their
eventual professional degree.
Host Institution: The Host institution is the institution that receives the student for the international
elective.
Home Administrator: Home administrators are faculty or staff members officially designated to assist
students with the GHLO application process. They determine whether access will be given to a student
as a browser or an applicant, review and release all applications to the Host institution, and verify
information about the student by completing the Home Institution Verification Statements.
Host Administrator: Host administrators are faculty or staff members officially designated to
determine which electives will be offered, set elective requirements and monitor elective offerings in
the GHLO Application Service, and ensure that an evaluation of the student is sent to the Home
institution once an elective has been completed. The Host administrator reviews the applications and
makes the decision to accept, deny, or offer an alternative date or elective to the student (Appendix B).
Note: Neither individual students nor student organizations are permitted to serve as Home or Host administrators
at their respective institutions.

Student Responsibilities
As a student using the GHLO Application Service, you must comply with the requirements and
performance expectations of both your Home and Host institutions. Remember that you are
representing both your Home institution and the GHLO program when you are applying to, and
attending, GHLO participating institutions. Please refer to the Student Participation Agreement (SPA),
which outlines your responsibilities and GHLO policies.
Student Conduct
Once you are on-site at the Host institution, you are responsible for following all the guidelines and
conduct rules that apply to students and visitors attending that institution. An institution may require
you to complete a student conduct acknowledgment form either during the application process or upon
arrival. Please consult with the administrators of the programs you are applying to about their
institutions specific rules and regulations for visiting students.

Requirements
21
The GHLO Collaborative Student Handbook 2016
You should expect to submit certain documents at different phases in the application process. The
documents that are needed to make an academic decision about your application will be requested in
the Pre-Decision Phase.
In the Pre-Decision Phase of each of your applications, the Home administrator is also responsible for
providing a completed Home School Verification Statement as the last element of your application.
Without this, your application is incomplete and will not be released to the Host institution.
Once the Host institution has conditionally accepted your application, you will need to complete
requirements in the Post-Decision Phase. If you do not complete your post-decision requirements, the
Host institution may decide to deny your application. The completion of these requirements is essential
to confirm your acceptance to the elective and need to be completed before the beginning of the
elective and, in many cases, before arriving in the Host country.
Additional information can be found on the Institutional Profile and Elective Information page. See the
example below.

international electives.
Things to be aware of when applying to international electives:
1. You must have a passport that will be valid for at least 6 months after your elective
completion date.
2. You will need to consult with your Host institution about possible visa options.
3. Each location may have specific inoculation recommendations. To find your location
specifics, please explore the following resources by copying and pasting the URLs below:
4. Consult with your Host institution for housing options OR if housing arrangements are not
available through the institution, the following link may be helpful:
www.housinganywhere.com.
Click OK to continue with this application. You will be prompted on the next screen to select
from the available months for this elective.
Your application home screen will be visible next and will display the list of documents you will need to
complete for the Pre-Decision Phase.
When submitting your first application, you will be required to read and accept the Student Participation
Agreement. When you accept the Student Participation Agreement, your electronic signature will be

recorded and the agreement will be applied to each subsequent application. The full Student
Participation Agreement can be found in Appendix E.
26
The GHLO Collaborative Student Handbook 2016
Immediately after you submit payment, you will need to refresh your elective application screen. If you
have refreshed your screen and the check box next to the GHLO Application Payment does not
appear, log out and sign back in. Do not resubmit payment.
Payment submission is the final step of your application. When you submit your application to your
Home administrator, he or she will review and endorse your application by completing the final Pre-
Decision Phase document and the Home School Verification Statement. Your application will then be
sent to the Host administrator for an academic decision.
27
The GHLO Collaborative Student Handbook 2016
While you will receive reminders from the GHLO Application Service to respond to your elective offers,
you alone are responsible for responding in a timely manner to an offer. Offers will expire at the end of
the offer expiration period, and you will not be able to revive expired offers.
Post-Decision Phase
Final acceptance to the elective depends on your completing the post-decision requirements. Some
post-decision documents may include visa information, on-line orientation, and pre-arrival documents
and may need to be submitted well in advance of your arrival at the Host site.
28
The GHLO Collaborative Student Handbook 2016
The GHLO Student Pre-Departure Acknowledgment is a universal post-decision requirement for all
applications and must be completed before you leave for your elective.
Pre-Departure Checklist*

GHLO Resources
Know Before You Go
Having a positive international learning experience depends largely on being well-prepared, open, and
flexible. Before you embark on your travels, please review GHLOs very important pre-departure
reminders as well as resources available on the GHLO website. These free, easily accessible resources
will help prepare you for your international experience.
Housing Accommodations
Housing is one of the most important aspects of traveling abroad, and GHLO strongly recommends that
arrangements be made well in advance of your arrival at the Host institution.
Although some Host institutions provide housing, they are not obligated to do so. If housing is not
provided, the Host administrator may be able to provide guidance on housing options. Once accepted
into an elective, consult immediately with the Host administrator and with GHLO housing resources on
the Web. Reach out to student clubs and organizations to see what advice and guidance they can
provide.

Ethics
Ethical tensions and dilemmas may be present during an elective outside your home country. They may
arise as a result of power dynamics, resource issues, or cultural, religious, gender, or other norms.
Working through the ethical encounters with those from the Host culture and Host site is critical.
Remember that ethical standards vary in different contexts such as cultural, urban/rural, or resource
availability.
One example of an ethical situation you may encounter is being asked to perform patient care for which
you were not trained or you feel uncomfortable performing. This is an example of professional ethics at
play. As a GHLO student, please remember that you are not expected to perform duties that are outside
the scope of your prior training. You should communicate any discomfort you may feel in performing
such tasks to your supervising staff.

Students Role
When planning to travel abroad, you need to maintain a high level of vigilance, take appropriate steps
to enhance your personal safety, and follow instructions issued by your Home and Host institutions.
You should also be aware of what your home country recommends for safe travel in your host
country.
One way to prepare yourself is to find the international access codes for calling your home country
from abroad. These are available here: www.countrycallingcodes.com/index.php.
The international access code, a contact at both the Home and Host institutions, an
emergency contact number, and the local embassy or consulate number should be written on a
wallet-size card. You are advised to carry the card with you at all times while traveling abroad. You
can also enter this information into your mobile phone, if you can use your phone while abroad.
If at any time you feel unsafe, you should first discuss the situation with someone at your local Host
institution. If the issue is not resolved to your level of comfort, you should immediately contact your
Home institution for assistance. It is also very important that you honestly report any incidents in
GHLOs post-elective evaluation so that we are aware of the situation and can follow up with the Host
institution.
33
The GHLO Collaborative Student Handbook 2016
institutions responsibility not to release any applications to Host institutions from students it does
not deem fit for placement.
Home institutions should have their students emergency contacts on file, should know a point of
contact at the Host institution in case of an emergency, and may contact GHLO staff if assistance is
needed in reaching the Host institution or the student.
If a natural disaster or political unrest occurs at the Host location, the Host institution is responsible
for communicating to the Home institution accurate, timely information about the risk and the action
plan for ensuring the visiting students safety. Host institutions should have the emergency contact
information of the students participating in the elective.
During emergencies, the AAMC asks the Host institution to inform the GHLO staff of developing
situations. The GHLO Team may provide emergency assistance, as appropriate.
34
The GHLO Collaborative Student Handbook 2016
In the case of an emergency, if a student is unable to reach the emergency contacts, the GHLO Team
may, in consultation with Host administrators, help inform emergency contacts of the students
current situation.

GHLO FAQs
39
The GHLO Collaborative Student Handbook 2016
What are the benefits for a student applying to an elective through GHLO? Why
cant I just apply to the same elective directly through the website of the
hosting institution?
Institutions that receive student applications through the GHLO network are assured that the applicants
are in good academic standing at their Home institutions and that the Home institutions endorse their
applications. Furthermore, when students apply from a GHLO institution, they can be assured that both
parties have agreed to the GHLO Collaborative Participation Agreement terms and conditions, which
require that applications be acted upon in a timely manner. Many students applying as international
visiting students whose institutions do not participate in GHLO report needing to send numerous emails
and having to make phone calls to follow up on their applications.
Does applying through GHLO give me a better chance of being accepted than
applying directly to the Host institution?
Most likely, yes. When you apply to an institution through the GHLO Application Service, you transmit
your documents electronically through one portal. It is likely that you will have fewer documents to
submit to the Host institution for an academic decision than if you apply directly. In most cases, applying
through the GHLO Application Service helps move consideration of your application by the Host ahead
of unaffiliated international visiting students. Additionally, some institutions limit international visiting
students to those from partner institutions and from the GHLO Collaborative.
Does a GHLO institution dedicate a fixed number of its electives to the GHLO
Collaborative?
Institutions annually commit to offer a minimum number of electives through the GHLO Application
Service. This number varies from one institution to another. Some institutions create a GHLO-specific
elective to which only GHLO students can apply.
40
The GHLO Collaborative Student Handbook 2016
Generally, yes. Standard GHLO application requirements and GHLO Home institution verifications
streamline the application process. Furthermore, because GHLO divides the application process into
phases, a GHLO applicant will often have fewer documents to submit to the Host institution for an initial
acceptance. After acceptance, other documents may be required of applicants.
