Summary
Is paper cup able to burn while containing water? The experiment shown that cup
wasnt able to burn while filled up with water. The main reason behind this is
because that heat given by flame is quickly transfer and absorbed by the water
which act as medium in the cup until the water is reached 100 degree celsius and
start boiling.this has shown that the bunsen burner act as a exothermic reaction
which provide energy in form of heat to the water and the water act as an
endothermic reaction which absorb the heat provided by the flame of bunsen burner.
So that the temperature of the water cup was unable to reach the burning
temperature hence that was not burning and the temperature of the water in the
cup will increase until the water boiled. To start this experiment We should prepared
a few small paper cup, water, bunsen burner and ring and ring stand.

The experiment will be started since the bunsen burner was on the medium heat.
Then filled up the cup with water about seventy five percent until ninety percent but
try not to overflowing .By using the ring and ring stand holding the cup above the
burning material about six inch. Continue holding the cup and burn it until the water
boiled. When the cup reached 100 degree celsius remove the heat and allow the cup
and water to cool by putting the water cup inside the beaker which contain little of
water act as a cooling agent to allow the cooling process became faster and
observed the result after cooled.

After the experiment, we observed that the water in the cup turn yellowish and the
cup burned a little part because of those part does not contact with water. This is
because the heat unable to transfer to the water and those parts reached the
burning temperature of the paper cup which is. To prevent burning situation happen,
we may add some water on those part which does not contact with water so that
the water on those part will absorb the heat and transfer the heat to the water in
the cup to prevent the cup from reaching burning temperature before the water in
the cup boiled. Then, the water inside the cup turn yellowish is because of the char
of the cup leak though the then get inside the water and mix with it.

As a result, this experiment successful proven that paper cup was unable to burn
while contain water inside the cup. If the whole part of the paper cup contact with
water
Question

1)Examine the cup after the water has cooled. What do you observed?

After examine the water in the paper cup, we observed that there when burned the
bottom part of paper cup, the char will appear on the bottom surface part of paper
cup but it does not burn. After that the char get leak into the water and the water
turn yellowish. After that, the flame of the bunsen burner is then in contact with the
upper part of the paper cup which does not contact with the water in the paper cup.
The upper part of the cup will start burned and then stop when the burned part
reach to the same level as the level of the water in the paper cup.

2)Why the paper cup not burned?

The paper cup does not burned because of the water act as the medium to absorb
the heat provided by the flame of Bunsen burner and transfer heat to the whole part
of water. Thus, The bunsen burner act as a exothermic reaction which provide
energy in form of heat to the water and the water act as an endothermic reaction
which absorb the heat provided by the flame of bunsen burner. The heat transfer
will stop when the temperature of the water and the paper cup reached equilibrium,
in this situation there is no net heat transfer between water in the cup and the flame
of bunsen burner. Since the most of the heat is absorbed by the water, the paper
cup does not have enough heat energy to burn and reach the burning temperature,
hence the paper cup does not burned.

3) If you heat water in a glass container, the glass will get hotter than the water.
However, the paper did not get very hot. How can you explain this situation?

Since the heat capacity of the glass cup is lower than the water, every heat absorb by
the glass will increase higher temperature compare with water. The heat
conductivity of the glass cup is also lower than paper cup thus the heat transfer from
paper cup to the water is faster than glass cup to water. The heat gain by the glass
cup is higher than the heat lost therefore there is a greater increase in temperature
of glass cup than the temperature increase of the paper cup.
