Course Description (AMS):


This course is designed to improve the sight singing and ear training skills of music majors
using drills to develop aural awareness. Melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation are
emphasized.

Prerequisite(s) (AMS):
MUSI 1117: A passing grade in MUSI 1117

Co-requisite(s) (AMS):
Students must also enroll in MUSI 1312.

Sight Singing Minimum Competencies


Objective
Sing any major, minor, or chromatic scale
Sing any triad type in any position.
Sing melodies using sixteenth note and larger note values in simple
meters that are in major keys.
Sing melodies using sixteenth note and larger note values in simple and
compound meters that are in minor keys.

2. Ear - Training minimum objectives met for course

Ear Training Minimum Competencies


MUSI 1117
Identify any interval ascending or descending within an octave.
Notate minor melodies in simple meters and notate major melodies in simple and
compound meters
Notate rhythms in compound meter
Identify harmonic cadences as authentic, plagal, or deceptive.
Identify simple harmonic progressions such as I-IV-V-I and I-ii6-V-I.

Assessments (AMS):
1. Students are assessed by individual student performances on quizzes and exams. See
the attached competency chart for Sight Singing.
2. Students are assessed by individual student dictation quizzes and exams. See the
attached competency chart for Ear Training.

Course Requirements:
CLASS PROCEDURES:
Your will have sight singing and ear training assignments due every class. There will be a
melodic dictation quiz every Tuesday. Every Thursday there will be either a rhythmic dictation
quiz or harmonic dictation quiz. You must bring a pencil and manuscript paper to every class.

Instructional Modes: This class will involve taking dictation and sight singing every class.
Practice of singing and ear training outside of class will be necessary for you to pass this
course.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR:
1. Students who talk at inappropriate times during class will be asked to leave.
2. Any student found cheating on an exam will receive a 0 for that exam.
3. Work that is turned in late will have 10 points deducted from the grade for each day it
is late.
4. If your cell phone rings during class, you will lose 5 points from your final
grade.

Criteria for Grading:

Sight Singing
Daily Grades - You will earn a daily grade in sight singing one day per week
Midterm: Your sight singing midterm will be given the weeks of Mar. 7.
Final Exam: Your final sight singing exam will be given the weeks of May 2.

Ear Training
There will be three exams which are tentatively scheduled:
Feb. 18, 2016
Mar. 31, 2016
May 10, 2016
Every class you will have a short ear training quiz at the beginning of class.

Make-up Exams: You must make arrangements to make missed assignments or quizzes up
within one week after returning from an illness or excused absence.

You are responsible for scheduling performance make-up quizzes and assignments in sight
singing and ear-training with your instructor as soon as possible after your absence.

Attendance:
I must submit an attendance record at the end of the semester for every student. Regular and
prompt class attendance is expected of every student. A students absence means that the
student is not able to participate in the class. For purposes of attendance, I will use quizzes
given at the beginning of each class as your attendance record. The following policies apply
through the 11th week of classes. The instructor
1. MUST drop a student who has not attended class by the 12th day of classes that
semester.
2. May drop a student who misses 7 classes.
3. MUST drop a student who misses 13 classes.

WITHDRAWAL FROM CLASS:


Students who officially drop this course will receive a grade of "W" or Q if they withdraw before
the official withdrawal date.
