Applying for Free and Reduced Price School Meals

Schools send school meal applications home at the beginning of each school year.
However, you may apply for school meals any time during the school year by submitting
an application directly to your school or district. You may ask for an application any time
during the school year. If youre earning at or below current Income Eligibility
Guidelines, you are encouraged to contact your school or district to fill out a school meal

Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) also provides automatic eligibility. Please contact
your school to determine if you need to fill out an application.
Hello to the staff at Hix News: You guys do a great job each month
and I look forward to each issue. Hard to believe its been 57 years since the class of
1960 graduated. As time goes by, I seem to remember more and more of those good days.
Im still active managing our appraisal business and get in a round of golf now and again
and enjoy the grand children.
To Henry, Roger, Carol, Buffalo Bob, Bobby G, Linda and the rest of the staff, congrats
on a great job!...Fran DeCabia 1960

Some of you know that for several years I have been attempting to
become a contestant on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire ". The process involves taking a
30 question multiple choice test. The questions are random in subject matter and can be
on current events, pop culture, film noir or ancient history. Really just about anything.
The catch is you have only 10 minutes to read, answer, and record your response on a
computer card a la the SAT' s.
When the show was broadcast out of N.Y. and Conn. the "auditions" were held in 4th
ABC studios here in Manhattan and then at another site further uptown. You were
allowed to audition up to 5 times per year. So for about 7 or 8 years I did just that.
I passed the written part of the audition about 70% of the time. This is no small feat since
I don't think that you can get more than 3 wrong, (they don't tell you what a passing grade
is). After the written, if you pass, there is an interview to see if you are personable and
photogenic. I have passed the written part over 25 times and have never made it passed
the interview.
Since the show moved to Las Vegas a couple of years ago the main audition process has
moved out West as well. They only come to N.Y. for a day or two. It was held this past
June 9th.
I'm here to report that my streak remains intact. I passed the written and was, once again,
rejected after the interview. A guy could get a complex.

Kudos to Denise who works in the

pharmacy at CVS in Hicksville at the old Center Shops. I went to pick up a prescription
for my father. Since he gets his meds from the VA, he does not have a drug plan on his
insurance and waived Medicare for an Advantage Plan. We thought we would pay for it
the first time until it could be set up to get from the VA. The cost was $500 for one
month. I paid for it and went to buy Carvel. As I got into my car, my brother called
because the "lady from CVS" (Denise) called because she found a manufacturers coupon
and wanted me to go back to get a refund. New price was $257. Still expensive but better.
Amazing that, even though I had paid and left the store, she found a coupon and called
me back. How often does that happen? Major thanks to DeniseLynne Lombardi 1971

celebrating our 50th Anniversary. The sights we expected to see we're beautiful; the food
was outstanding but the history was mind blowing. We walked through the Acropolis in
Athens dating back to the Fifth Century BC; the island of Delos back to the Seventh
Century BC; the city of Akrotiri on the island of Santorini dating back to the 15th Century
BC. We never appreciated history so much. Why was history so boring when we were in

factStephanie Schlegel Manning 1968

Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert, an hour east of
Bakersfield, CA, some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how
hard they tried, they couldn't get their brand new, 22 foot boat, going. It was very
sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power they applied. After about
an hour of trying to make it go, they putted into a nearby marina, thinking someone there
may be able to tell them what was wrong. A thorough topside check revealed everything
in perfect working condition. The engine ran fine, the out-drive went up and down, and
the propeller was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in
the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water he was laughing so hard.
Under the boat, still strapped securely in place, was the trailer!

The original line-up of the group consisted of vocalist John Dizek, guitarist Richard
McKenna, drummer Jon Small, and organist Harry Weber. In 1966 Weber was fired from
the band due to excessive drug use (found dead a few years later on a railroad track) and
was replaced by Howie Arthur Blauvelt and Billy Joel on bass and keyboards
respectively. It is with this lineup that the band recorded their self-titled debut album in
1967. Blauvelt departed the band early in 1968 but returned later on in the year. Dizek
departed the band in late 1968, at which point Joel took over on vocal duties. The band
recorded their second album, Hour of the Wolf, in 1969, before disbanding. Following the
demise of The Hassles Joel and Small formed the duo Attila whilst Blauvelt later co-
founded Ram Jam.

I wrote this piece 12 years ago. The HHS class of 1967 graduated 50 years ago. Sunday,
June 25, 2017 is the 50 year anniversary. But did it graduate? Read on
As I look forward to my second daughter's high school graduation this week, I reflect
on my abortive HHS graduation ceremony, and those times. I lived on Albany Street for
10 years, right across Newbridge Road opposite the HHS tennis courts. Every year
people attending the HHS graduation parked on our street. Finally it was my graduation
day, the Class of '67. The principal, Ray Rusch, was in his first year, succeeding Leon
Galloway. The class advisor, Carmine Masi, had just recovered from a devastating auto
accident. Chet Jaworski was the assistant principal for discipline. The football team went
undefeated and won the Rutgers Cup. Billy Joel wasn't famous yet, and wasn't among the
grads. Israel had persevered in the Six Days War. We lost three of our grads to a tragic
auto - train collision only weeks earlier. Sgt. Pepper had just been released, and would
become the soundtrack for that summer between high school and college (in my case,
Stony Brook). The worst of Viet Nam, and its impact on all of us, was yet to unfold. Most
families had one car, one telephone (black), one TV (black and white). A hamburger stand
called "Burger King" had opened on Hempstead Turnpike and featured something called
a "Whopper." Closer to home were Ed's and Wetsons. Howard Johnson's on Old Country
Rd. was a popular night spot. The relatively new "Twin Theaters" at the then roofless Mid
Island Shopping Plaza had reserved seats for major feature presentations (e.g., Dr.
Zhivago). The Air Conditioned Prudential Theater still thrived. The best pizza anywhere
was at Frank's Alibi. For a couple of bucks for gas and the toll bridge, you could spend a
great day on the powder sand at Jones Beach. I had just ended a part time job at Mays in
Levittown, where I was assigned to the "Mod Shop," and was ready to spend a second
summer at hard labor on the loading dock at Sanita Paper Products on Duffy Avenue
(Flex Straws, Minty Pix, paper cups).

I drove a '66 VW beetle, which I would not surrender for another twelve years. Anyway,
we assembled in the gym, and filed out to the bleachers on the football field. When
"Pomp and Circumstance" concluded, and as the class president (Brian McMennemon)
began the customary opening to his remarks, "Faculty, parents, friends, fellow
students ...."), the sky burst and the rain began to pour. The graduation was cancelled.
Everyone scattered. The grads were directed to the gym. In light of the over emphasis on
sports at HHS, it was only fitting that the phys ed teachers dispensed our diplomas (I
recall Harry Renn saying, "Marcus, you get two.") So, the 'Class of '67 had no graduation
ceremony. I had "normal" graduation ceremonies for college, grad school and law school.
But somehow those did not make up for the washed out HHS graduation, which was to
commemorate the completion of thirteen years of public school for about 1000 kids in the
same school district and with similar "baby boom" backgrounds. I wondered if I would
ever see any of those people again, and was glad that many attended several of the
reunions I made it to. As the Class of '67 40th anniversary approaches, maybe we should
kick off our reunion on the football field on a sunny afternoon before repairing to Villa
Victors?

History of Hicksville (Part 1)

Broadway: John Street (1903) [This image is used with permission of Hicksville Public Library]

To most Long Island residents, Hicksville is a major transportation hub and home to the
only IKEA outlet store east of New York City. Undoubtedly, most residents know little of
Hicksvilles humble beginnings as a farming community and its evolution into a
prominent business area in the early twentieth century. Subsequently, the population
expansion of Nassau County in the post-World War II years changed Hicksville. To
allow for better movement of vehicular traffic, the railroad tracks were elevated and some
major roads were widened. Although the action altered the layout of the community and
eliminated a chunk of the business district, it was considered dire because Hicksvilles
grade-level station was at the crossroads of the Long Island Rail Roads (LIRR) Main
Line and Port Jefferson Branch. When a train passed through, traffic backed up for over
a half-mile. It can be argued that progress raped Hicksville of its businesses and small
village-like identity. While current Hicksville is an ideal location to raise a family in a
suburban setting similar to neighboring Levittown, there is no downtown Main Street
location similar to other Nassau communities. Much has been done over the years to
revitalize the downtown area and give it a sense of Main Street character. The following
is a short history of Hicksville and how it evolved into a large Long Island suburb with a
struggling downtown section.
Beginnings and Arrival of the Railroad

Elias and Valentine Hicks [This image is used with permission of Hicksville Public
Library]

The modern-day hamlet of Hicksville in the town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New
York was originally part of the 5,000 acres that Robert Williams of Hempstead purchased
in 1648 from Pugnipcan, a chief of the Matinecock Indian tribe. The property was the
eastern portion of the Hempstead Plains featuring miles of prairie grass. While some
land was used for grazing, what is now Hicksville, lay vacant for nearly two centuries. It
was not until a Jericho businessman named Valentine Hicks, son-in-law of the nationally-
famous preacher Elias Hicks, set out to develop it. Hicks formed a land association in
1834 to create a community on the plains.[1]

Military Mom Put Sticker on Van, Only To Find a

Strangers Note about Her Sons on Windshield
Jodi St. Clair knows firsthand how stressful and emotional it is to be a military parent.
Her older son, 22-year-old Jacob, is serving in Korea. Her younger son, 20-year-old
Daniel, is in North Carolina.
Jodi and her husband placed two bumper stickers on the back of their van. One reads
My sons defend our freedom, and the other says, Proud parent of a soldier. Its the
kind of thing that invites outsiders to comment in both positive and negative ways, but
Jodi could not be prouder of her boys.

One day, Jodi left her shift at the hair salon where she works and noticed a couple of
things stuck on the windshield. At first, she thought she was looking at a business flyer
and a $20 bill, and assumed it was an impressive way to advertise.

But when Jodi plucked the paper from the windshield, she realized a random stranger had
left a handwritten note for her to find and the anonymous author had something she
wanted to say about those bumper stickers on her van.

Moments later, Jodi was brought to tears. Now, shes on a mission to track down the
woman who left her the unexpected surprise.

A little boy was waiting for his mother. As he waited, he was approached by a man who
asked, "Son, can you tell me where the Post Office is?"

The little boy replied, "Sure! Just go straight down this street two blocks and turn to your
right."
The man thanked the boy kindly and said, "I'm the new pastor in town. I'd like you to
come to church on Sunday. I'll show you how to get to Heaven."
The little boy replied with a chuckle; "You're bullshitting me, right? You don't even
know the way to the Post Office."

Theres nothing better than a perfect game, right? Its the highest accomplishment a
pitcher can achieve. Throughout the history of Major League Baseball, only 23 perfect
games have occurred. But none of them have ever been this good. A high school
softball pitcher in New Jersey not only tossed a perfect game, but struck out every
single batter she faced.
Thats Cedar Grove high school pitcher Mia Faieta

Shes putting up some unreal numbers this season. The sophomore has a 1.36 ERA
over 17 appearances. In 106 innings pitched, shes racked up an incredible 229
strikeouts out of a possible 318 batters. Her last three starts were no hitters with the
final game perfect. Just in case you wanted to see a scorecard from the event
:
Bald Eagle Brings Baby Hawk Back To Her Nest. But
Instead Of Attacking Him, She Feeds Him

By CARALYNN LIPPO

Hawks and bald eagles are both birds of prey, but that doesnt mean the two species get
along. In fact, according to the Hancock Wildlife Foundation, hawks are even considered
the mortal enemy of bald eagles which makes the fact that a bald eagle has
adopted a baby hawk all the more incredible.
In footage captured on May 31, 2017, and uploaded on June 1, 2017, a small, gray baby
hawk sits in an eagles nest among three larger eaglets. I held my breath when the
mama returned to the nest in this video. Knowing that hawks and eagles do not get along
and that sometimes eagles even prey on the smaller birds I was expecting a sad and
gruesome end for the hawklet.
Shockingly, the bald eagle does not harm her new nest-guest at all. Instead, she feeds
him food from her mouth, as if the little hawk were one of her own. Whats even more
amazing is that the eagles own children seem to accept the baby hawk among them; they
dont fight him for the food. You have to see the interactions between this little hawk and
the eagle family!
Scientists think that the hawk chick was initially taken from its nest to be eaten by the
bald eagle family. Instead, the pair has seemingly begun raising it alongside their own
chicks in a nest atop a Douglas fir tree in a bird sanctuary. The Hancock Wildlife
Foundation has stated that they are keeping an eye on the nest to ensure the baby hawks
safety in his new home.

The eighth natural wonder of the world may have been rediscovered 131 years after it
was buried by a volcanic eruption, New Zealand researchers believe.
In the mid-1800s, the pink and white terraces of Lake Rotomahana in the North Island
attracted tourists from around the globe. The terraces dramatic cascading pools
descending into the lakes temperate waters were lost in an eruption of Mount Tarawera
in 1886.
Two researchers believe they have pinpointed the location where the terraces may lie
preserved 10-15 metres below the surface, under layers of mud and ash, and they say a
full archaeological survey is needed to excavate the site.
They [the terraces] became the greatest tourist attraction in the southern hemisphere and
the British Empire and shiploads of tourists made the dangerous visit down from the UK
and Europe and America to see them, said Rex Bunn, one of the researchers. But they
were never surveyed by the government of the time, so there was no record of their
latitude or longitude.
Bunn and Dr Sascha Nolden believe the terraces were not destroyed or pushed to the
bottom of the lake as earlier research has suggested but are buried on the foreshore of the
lake.
They used the field diaries of a German-Austrian geologist, Ferdinand von Hochstetter,
which contain a detailed description of the terraces location before the 1886 eruption, to
establish their likely resting place.
Our research relied on the only survey ever made of that part of New Zealand, and
therefore we are confident the cartography is sound, said Bunn. Hochstetter was a very
competent cartographer.
Since the pairs research paper was published this month in the Journal of the Royal
Society of New Zealand, Bunn said he had received daily offers of help to conduct an
survey, and he was in the process of assembling a team of the willing to begin
exploring the site once the first funding goal of NZ$70,000 (40,000) was met.
We want to undertake this work in the public interest. And I have been closely liaising
with the ancestral owners of the land, the Tuhourangi Tribal Authority, and they are
supportive and delighted with the work, he said.
Bunn believes the terraces could be in reasonable condition, potentially with minimal
damage, and could be restored to their former glory once excavated.
This is not the first time researchers have claimed to have discovered the lost terraces. In
2011, scientists using an unmanned submarine said they had found remnants of the pink
terraces on the floor of the lake, buried by silt and debris.
Last year GNS Science New Zealand said that after five years of research, a team of New
Zealand and international scientists had come to the inescapable conclusion that most
of the terraces had been destroyed by the eruption.
Bunn said he was in discussion with GNS but and he believed its conclusions were based
on 130 years of inaccurate cartographical information.

Many of us watch what we eat but not what we drink when on a diet. Thats a
mistake. The average American drinks one out of five of their daily calories.
Choosing the right drinks can tweak your metabolism, curb your appetite, and help
cut calories. Which drinks are Spoilers and which are Helpers on the path to
weight loss?
Every time you chug a bottle of soda, you get hundreds of empty calories. Switching to
diet soft drinks is an obvious way to cut calories, but the research is mixed on whether
this switch leads to weight loss. Some studies show a short-term benefit. Others find diet
soda drinkers gain weight. If you eat or drink more calories than you burn, just switching
to diet soda may not do the trick.

Replacing carbonated soft drinks with water will cut hundreds of calories per day.
Drinking two glasses of water before a meal may also help you feel full faster, so you
dont eat as much. And drinking enough water may have a positive effect on your
metabolism.

June 3, 2017It is with great sadness that I must inform you of the passing this morning
of my beloved wife Myra after her long battle with cancer.
We met at age 15 and devoted our entire lives to each other and our family. Her passing is
a great loss to all of us. Although Myra came in a petite package (4' 11 1/2"), her presence
was always a force of nature.
Myra's happiest moments were working in her garden or painting nature's landscapes.
Our hopes and prayers are that she finds eternal happiness as she returns to Mother
NatureStewart Fox

Myra Rosen Fox graduated Hicksville High School in 1965. Myra married Stewart Fox
several years later on June 28, 1969. Formerly of Richmond, VA, New Haven, CT,
Hershey, PA, Allentown, PA and Roslyn, NY, they moved to Malden-on-Hudson in
2015. Myra received a B.S. from Monmouth College and degrees from Penn State and
Pratt Manhattan. She taught elementary school for several years in Richmond, VA and
Woodbridge, CT. As an artist and freelance painter, she was involved in the Long Island,
Saugerties and Woodstock com-munities. She was recognized and exhibited at The Art
Guild of Port Washington, Manhasset Art Association, and at Woodstock Artists
Association and Museum among others. Loving wife of Stewart Fox; mother of Robert
Fox (Laura Capobianco) of Massapequa Park, Jillian Fox of Malden-on-Hudson and
Amanda (Justin) Shea of New York City; grandmother of Zara and Kara Fox, and Neve
Shea; and sister of the late Neal Rosen. A gathering on Monday between 11:00 and 12:00
at Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Hgts., Catskill. A funeral service
will be conducted at 12:00. Interment in Town of Rhinebeck Cemetery.

She enriched our lives with her smile and zest for life
through her love of everything I will miss her laugh at the studio but will keep her
joy in my heart forever. My prayers go out to her family in this time of need.

I look forward to receiving my Hix News every month. It's a great way to keep up on the
latest happenings from my hometown. Sadly, I must tell you that my wife Debbie passed
away on October 17, 2013 so I think it is time for me to remove our anniversary date of
June 11, 1982 from your listing. Thank you for recognizing us over the years as we had
31 wonderful years and three great children together. Keep up the good work. And, as I
said every morning while at HHS,"these have been your morning announcements, thank
you for your attentionMike Heroy

MikeSo sorry for your loss. Living together for so many years bonds you as no other
interaction can. The editors at HixNews will remove your anniversary date. You can
remember Debbie each year by sending a note to HixNews the month before the
anniversary date about her life and we will begin an In Memoriam section of the
newsletter.
There are many notes I see on Facebook that are attributed to a family member loss.
It would be fitting to honor all and I think I'm going to do a Facebook note and encourage
others to respond. So sorry for your loss once again from all the editors.
Warmest RegardsBufBob and the gang at HixNews
p.s. where did Debbie spend her high school years???

Bob,
I married a Colorado native. She was a graduate of Fort Lupton High School, a small
town just north of Denver. Thanks for coming up with the idea for HixNews. I look
forward to each edition as a way to stay in touch with my hometown. As an aside, my
assistant pastor here at Christ Community Church in Greeley is also a Hicksville alum,
Bruce Hoppe. Another Greeley person, Wayne Gould, actually graduated with me from
Hicksville (we're on the same page of the yearbook) and we began teaching together in
Fort Lupton in 1976. Anyway, thank you for your kind words, and I wish you well
Mike

March 22, 1970. I was the 2nd chopper in on a 1 bird LZ. The 3rd chopper in was hit by
an RPG. We hit the ground as the chopper disintegrated. Metal flying everywhere. The
right side pilot (Michael Hatfield) was killed and the door gunner was injured. Remains
of the chopper are on the left. After the initial contact all hell broke loose but the
remaining men made it. May you RIP Michael. Always remember that day and thinking
of you todayBill Devoe 1968
Silver Star

It's been almost 47 years since that dreadful day. I want to thank you Garry Franklin for
helping me after graduation from NCO school and giving me a ride to Fort Gordon with
your wife and young son. I was 19, you were 22. A big difference back then. When we
heard the automatic weapons and screaming on the radio we knew you were in trouble.
We raced to your location and hoped for the best. It wasn't to be. You and Lt. Jurich had
passed. We thought the worst was over and unfortunately we were wrong. Mortar fire
came in on our position and literally wiped the company out. I was one of the lucky ones.
Minor shrapnel wounds. So many others suffered far more serious injuries. Your son is
now 48 and I'm sure a lovely person. May you and Lt Jurich RIP. Think of you 2 every
Memorial Day. I would be remiss not to recognize the third soldier killed.
(Osborne Mattingly) I did not know him that well as he was in another platoon.
I was caregiver for my wife, Joyce, from 2009 to 2013 until she passed from Alzheimers.
I watched a vibrant woman reduced to a frail fraction of the person she was who lost the
ability to talk and eventually the ability to eat. A school teacher for a major portion of her
adult life, she taught with a passion that was a result of her exposure to a variety of
cultures gleaned during extensive travel. She went from 140 pounds down to 75 pounds
and died while in a fetal position that was normal for her last year of life. The really sad
thing is didnt know if she was suffering because communication was not in the
equationbuffalo bob casale
Susan Donner Merkler 1968Very sad, so sorry.

Carmen Maxey My mother suffered through the exact same thing and she compounded
hers by having Parkinson's! It was like watching a horror movie running out of control
and no way to stop it! Like you, my mom weighed 50 or less pounds when she passed.

Barbara Kargauer Castonguay I am very sorry Bob. I have always been in favor of an
Assisted Dying Law. You have sadly lived one of the many reasons why.

Ronni Izzo 1959Bobby sorry for your personal tragedy and your
explanation of what people go through. It is very enlightening.
Cheryl Gries Brown 1972My sincere
condolences. It's an awful disease. My heart goes out to you.

Fran Gallo 1961 Something we all worry about and pray it doesn't
happen to our loved ones.

Barbara Sussman Markowitz Bob. I feel for you. My husband became disabled at 52.
He died at 72. I was his caregiver until he went into hospice at home. We were married
for 49 years. My children were and are wonderful support. I wish you love and peace

Rosa Patterson 1961 Bob, I understand what you

went through. My mother had Alzheimer's & a brain hematoma ...after surgery she went
to a nursing home. Her heart was strong, but she declined in all aspects of life. She lived
15 years like that. It was heart breaking.
Dennis Kearney 1961 So sad that one's life can end that way.
Joyce was a vivacious lady.

(Christmas 1966 Buffalo Bob & Joyceour wedding picture. We eloped and went to
Carson City, Nevada and got married by a justice of the peace at 3 oclock in the morning
July 31st, 1966)

Sue Hodges Mruz 1962 So, so sorry, Bob. We wish you peace and love
Frank Tiringer 1961 Watched my mother pass in a very similar
way It was very tough on my father for 2 long years I agree 100% God Bless

Lynn Chernok Murphy 1967 It's a very sad disease. No one

should have to suffer from this.

Joe Carfora While I knew Joyce died of Alzheimer's and that had to
be very hard on you and your daughter, your description here really tells me just how
hard this had to be for her, you and your daughter. Assisted dying with allowance of it in
a person's will, while they are still able to attest it, would provide proper control of it and
would be a good thing. I believe God understands that!
Ricki Pollak McKenna 1962 So sad, my
heart goes out to you. Had no idea. I'm watching my mom in memory care, she's
physically fairly good with a walker but the memory is going.

Kurt J. Stietz 1960 Know the feeling watched my father in law

with same condition. You have my sympathy Bob

Linda Mastrosanti Aragoncillo 1961 I still think of Joyce as the sweetest classmate
and friend , it's so sad that we have to watch ones we love to go through any sickness like
Alzheimers etc, it had to be so hard for you and family......my thoughts are always with
all of you....hold on to all the memories.......
Rose Marchese Genovese & Tony Genovese 1961 Our God is the author & finisher of
our lives. I feel your pain, my mother died from that horrific disease. She was a beautiful
lady.
